Highlights/roots! HELP!

So my hair is highlighted blonde and it was last done 8 weeks ago so as you can imagine I have a lot of root showing! My natural colour is brown. What’s the best blonde dye I can use to lighten my roots up a bit? Or should I just wait until my hairdresser can do it? My natural colour is a warm brown so I don’t want to pick anything that’s going to give me orange roots! Is there a semi permanent that will do the trick? I’ve seen the ad for the Garnier one that HW uses & I know that’s permanent but tbh that always looks a slightly yellowy & if my hair is warmer I’m afraid my will turn out very warm! Help!

I doubt box dye will lighten enough to lift the red tones from your hair so could leave the roots orange. My hair is also highlighted and I am having many months gap between getting roots done.

I’m not a hairdresser but do have dark brown natural hair that is also highlighted blonde - during the first lockdown I was really tempted to dye it as I was striding around like a 70’s trailer park dweller (avec sans mullet) with extreme roots.

But all the advice I had was wait to see the hairdresser and I’m really pleased I did as if you do it at home then it’ll a. Likely look crap, b. Might look terrible on or next to your existing highlights and c. Be a massive expensive mission for the hairdresser to save and try and fix.

Personally I don’t think it’s worth the risk - if it goes wrong, it’s not like you can get it professionally fixed, so you might be stuck with an orange skull and yellow lengths... 😱😱😱😱😱😱 which imo is worse than roots which are actually not unfashionable...

Good luck if you go for it!

The only thing a semi could do is darken the blonde to make it a closer match to the roots.

You will make your roots orange and will cost you probably triple the price to get it fixed once hairdressers open.

Use a purple toning shampoo to reduce the yellowness and make the blonde ashier. This helps to make the roots seem more of a deliberate "look" without permanently affecting your hair.

I did the opposite and covered the whole lot with 'medium cool blonde' and I now have chestnut coloured hair which doesn't suit me at all.

It's a semi permanent so will lift in time and I'm glad to be rid of the roots, but I remain unconvinced that naturally dark blonde hair like mine can be faked with dye, no matter what the box says.

Girl you know your hairdresser applies bleach to your hair to lighten it, so why do you think box dye would be sufficient? It’s not bleach. You will be left with a warm tone regardless of what toned dye you use to go lighter because it wouldn’t provide enough lift. The dye will lift the base colour of your hair to a warm brassy tone, so any ash colour applied on top will eventually wash out to the brass
