I read recently about the benefits of taking collagen and would love some advice. I've done a bit of googling and I'm a bit overwhelmed by the choice and different types available. Can anyone point me in the right direction or recommend one please ?

Avoid the powdered bovine collagen, it’s disgusting. Tried it once and the rest went in the bin 🤢

Blondie1984 · 28/01/2021 02:19

It’s a waste of time and money - don’t

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/01/2021 08:57

There’s no conclusive science behind it for aging. As if the digestive tract knows the collagen is only for skin and hair 😂 and all the other amino acids are for general repair elsewhere 🤣.

I think there might be something in it, my friend developed arthritis after menopause and it massively relieved when she started taking type 2 collagen. I don't know about skin ones though.

Thanks for the replies so far. I guess I better do some more reading up on it Blush @prancingqueen that sounds vile Confused

Save your money. The science doesn’t add up - at all!
What do I know though! I bought a Light Stim light thingie to boost collagen in my face. I think it is working a bit - lines particularly nose to mouth - seem less pronounced - but bought it mainly because had superb results in terms of plumpness reduced pores and brightness from the cheapie Neutrogena light mask for acne (originally bought for teenager) and which was withdrawn from market (sob). Light Stim definitely not as good.

Remember when we were little and we all ate a cube of jelly to make our nails and bones stronger? That was because of the gelatine in it - boiled collagen - with the same amino acids and proteins and just as digestible. There’s a load of old guff talked about collagen. Treat yourself to a fistful of Haribos. They’ll have the same effect.

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/01/2021 08:34

Jelly’s low in protein.

VenusClapTrap · 29/01/2021 14:49

My cousin swears by it, and is constantly waxing lyrical about it on FB and posting before and after photos. She also sells it. Before she moved onto collagen, she used to sell dieting ‘cleanse’ supplements and before that, various other MLM schemes.

So on that basis, for me, it’s firmly in the snake oil bracket.

Thesheerrelief · 29/01/2021 18:35

I take liquid collagen supplements and find it great for my joints as I have arthritis. I think my skin has improved, too, but I've also focused more on skincare, so it could be that!

mylovelydd · 29/01/2021 18:55

I take a bovine collagen powder for the arthritis in my neck and it stops that horrible dull ache I get in my neck and collar bone.
Anecdotally I also noticed my skin on my body gets smooth and soft when I take it and DH who never notices ANYTHING mentioned how lovely and soft my skin was so it must do something but I also read the reports recently that they couldn't find any scientific proof of it being good for ageing.
That said they also said that about drinking water and anyone who drinks 2 litres a day knows what it does to your skin and how you feel so...Bear

Martinisarebetterdirty · 29/01/2021 21:00

I drink a liquid collagen, it hasn’t made any difference to my face but the backs of the tops of my arms are smoother that they’ve ever been. I know it’s the collagen as I’ve not done anything different skincare or diet wise.

workshy44 · 29/01/2021 21:02

I take it for my hair, it hasn't made a difference to that yet but my skin is much firmer I have noticed

Hopdathelf · 30/01/2021 09:40

My deeply honest aesthetician told me it can help but skin is literally the last place it goes so it will help joints and all sorts of other internal things. I view it as a benefit for my ageing knees and anything else is a bonus.

On a separate note I miss the Neutrogena light mask so much. I bought a replacement from Current Body for £300 and it’s nowhere near as good. No 7 now has the same thing but branded for £99.

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/01/2021 10:30

Skin and hair are way down on the bodies priority list.

BeTheHokeyMan · 31/01/2021 14:05

Thanks for all the replies lots of food for thought. I might try it and see if I notice any difference. Almost 40 now and feel like I should be making changes but as I said I'm clueless as to what I'm actually meant to do ! Thanks again everyoneFlowers
