Dd has a red nose

bendmeoverbackwards · 26/01/2021 14:30

Dd is nearly 14. She has a few teenage spots, nothing too serious. But her nose has been quite red for a while even if there are no spots there.

Any suggestions what to do or try please?

Don't do too much.
Sounds like a form of rosacea so you need to be pretty gentle with it.

Avene has a redness product group as La Roche Posay Toleraine is for sensitive skins

She needs to wear a good sunscreen (30spf etc) every day.

Unfortunately rosacea often flares up and down every so often. Sun is a common cause as is stress...some people say alcohol, spicy food etc but my dermatologist said the only one with any evidence is the sun!

Even in winter, on a clear day the sun can be powerful.

A redness correcting CC cream could be needed to tone it down.

Couple of cosmetic fixes that I use/have used

Eborian CC have anti Red Correct,
Dr Jart Cicapair tiger balm - bit like a concealer

There's also something else called rosalique, which I haven't tried but has good reviews

Gentle products and I would have a look at Dr Sam Buntinfs you tube channel- I think she recommends azelaic acid for redness

bendmeoverbackwards · 29/01/2021 11:49

Thank you.

Think I'm looking for a product that will help reduce the redness rather than cover it up. I'll look up the products mentioned, they don't sound cheap though!

Would azelaic acid help with the look for broken capillaries with the redness or is it more for redness due to roseacea or allergic reactions to skin creams etc?

One of my DDs can get a bit red around the nose area. She’s currently using Pai cleanser and Boots Hemp calming serum and facial oil. When she looks after her skin and uses gentle products it looks massively better.

Boots Your Good Skin do a Cica overnight paste which really helps too.

I had a red nose from the age of 13 and tried everything - doctors for creams, antibiotics. Was initially told I was too young for rosacea but it just got worse and worse. Had it for decades and tbh, it ruined my life.
Please please ask your GP about Soolantra cream for her - I started it around 2 years ago at age of 46 and my rosacea went within 3 weeks. I still use it as maintenance a few times a week.

The theory is that hormonal changes and an oily skin can encourage overgrowth of a mite called demodex which can cause spots and redness. Soolantra contains an antihelmintic agent called ivermectin which kills the demodex.

@ShouldHaveCouldHaveWouldHave is it this one?

Thank you @JMAngel1 maybe I should try some of these suggestions first?

Yes that’s the one!

JMAngel1 · 30/01/2021 19:18

Absolutely but give it 6 months with cosmetic skincare and if no response or worse, then please consider Soolantra.

QueenOfPain · 30/01/2021 19:21

Soolantra is great stuff, two tubes of that and my red and angry skin is back to being just like a babies bum. Apart from my hormonal spots around my chin.

The rosacea rash was so bad on much cheeks that my GP did all of the tests to excuse Lupus as they though it was the classic butterfly rash.

QueenOfPain · 30/01/2021 19:21

*exclude.

MojoMoon · 30/01/2021 19:33

Soolantra helped me - mine was much more severe so had a course of antibiotics first and I use soolantra every so often when it starts to redden and that gets it back under control.

I'm not sure if they will prescribe to children though - would need to discuss with GP. I wish I had gone to mine earlier but was embarrassed.

Can't emphasise enough though that sunscreen is super important. Encourage her to get into the habit of wearing some everyday.

Avene and La Roche Posay are not too expensive - maybe a tenner in boots for a small bottle of cleanser and twelve for some soothing moisturiser? Cerave and Cetaphil are also often recommended for rosacea - also in boots and a bit cheaper than Avene and La Roche Posay.

JMAngel1 · 30/01/2021 19:50

Over 12 is pretty much an adult in the prescribing world

Wiredforsound · 30/01/2021 20:34

Ask the GP or a pharmacist before you go slathering it in god knows what. Rosacea is unlikely in a 14 year old for a start.

JMAngel1 · 30/01/2021 20:43

I had rosacea from 13
