What would you say is a good cost per wear?

Just that really. I have some stuff under £1 but not sure if that’s low enough.

FlibbertyGiblets · 26/01/2021 14:35

I know what you mean.

Shoes and boots are way below £1.

Nice sweater say 60 quid bought in Dec. Worn it twice now, down to 15 pw.

Summer dress was 50 quid three years ago, that is now point zero zero seven or something of a pence pw.

KirstenBlest · 26/01/2021 14:37

It depends on the item of clothing.
A t-shirt or pair of shoes might work out at a few pence per wear, but a party dress might be worn dozens of times but still be a few £ per wear.

caperplips · 26/01/2021 14:39

I have never considered my clothes in these terms!
I have some very expensive things that get worn infrequently but I love them & love knowing I have them there ready to wear should i need them. Plus they bring me pleasure so I don't consider them poor value for money

ElspethFlashman · 26/01/2021 15:00

I have this North Face soft shell jacket that I've lived in 6 months out of the year for about 15 years. Still looks as new as the day I bought it. Not a stitch out of place.

It's so old that I have only a vague memory of the cost - perhaps 100 quid at the time? Big investment back then! But by God was it a good one. Cost per wear must be down to about 1p. Maybe even negative cost!

S0CKS · 26/01/2021 15:16

That's an interesting way of viewing things!
It makes the more expensive dress cheaper than the cheaper one or two wear throw away fashion and I'm definitely somebody who justifies the £15 pick me up four times but not the £60 one once even though the £60 is more wearable.

ShandlersWig · 26/01/2021 20:14

I came onto to say under a tenner works for me. Then I can put it in a charity bag. I have Items i love that are in a negative. Looking at you lockdown joggers.

OppsUpsSide · 26/01/2021 20:16

I aim for under a £1 too

XazieRose · 26/01/2021 20:52

Yup, I aim for a quid or less too. If I’m down to a quid and I still like it, I keep it. If I’ve gone off it and it’s still decent, charity shop.

JaceLancs · 26/01/2021 22:42

Interesting as I’ve never thought of it in that way
However I think £1 to £5 per wear would be ok with me
I buy things thinking of re sell value for when I get bored of them
So bargain coat on eBay for £75 (retail £400) well worth it if I own and wear for 3-6 months and then resell at £50
Usually I sell for price paid or more and am in negative price per wear

S0CKS · 27/01/2021 07:50

Because im lockdown bored I spent a good amount of time last night working out my CPW for my work wear, I have a marks and Spencer dress at £2.33, an Hobbs dress at £2.97, a few Dorothy perkins cotton dresses down to 0.30, however the 'bargain' H&M dress is still £12.49 PW because its too formal for my current environment and £6 PW for my other 'bargain' work dress which proves this point to me! The Monsoon oh its half price coat £25 PW but the sainsbury cardigan must be in negative by now. Won't bore you with all of this but its definitely a good mindset.

NeedWineNow · 27/01/2021 09:01

This is a really interesting thread. I never thought of my clothes this way, although I remember that Marie Claire used to do a Save -v- Spend piece every month and do exactly that, work out the cost per wear. I shall look at my wardrobe with new eyes.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 27/01/2021 09:56

Belts and jeans are currently sitting at pence per wear. As per a PP I reckon on under £10, and for more expensive items I would expect them to last longer but take longer to recoup the investment.

Before I started tracking cost per wear I didn’t realise how much I wore belts and some other items, so now I feel much happier spending money on them.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 27/01/2021 12:19

I try to think #30wears when I buy. Over the last few years I have been better at spending more on things that I know will come out year on year (not huge money, but say a jumper from Cos or Arket in alpaca wool than two acrylic Zara ones), and it’s worked well, I tend to buy cheaper summer clothes because I live in Scotland and the days for floaty frocks are limited. That said, I have dresses from five years ago which I am looking forward to bringing out when the weather gets nicer.

Doobigetta · 27/01/2021 18:50

I don’t have a set figure, but I do keep it in mind, especially when buying evening clothes. It really isn’t worth spending on something if you’ll get half a dozen wears out of it and then get bored. Coats, on the other hand, start to look really good value even if they’re expensive.

MoiCnoi · 27/01/2021 21:07

Using a wardrobe app and the cost per wear stats are so illuminating.

Even pre-covid smart or dressy clothes are a very poor investment. I just do not have that lifestyle.

Meanwhile belts/pumps/boots and useful coats seem like really sound investments.

Cost per wear doesn't factor in the joy of an item though. I have some casual items that are down to a few pence per wear and I despise them. But a beautiful blush colour silk shirt from a jigsaw sample sale that's on £40 per wear as it's only been worn once but I feel joy just thinking about it.

Still a really useful calculation though. My actions are:

  1. I have permission to replace casual clothes I dislike with items I love as I'll surely get the wear out of them
  1. I need to make reasons to wear my best joyful threads
MacDuffsMuff · 27/01/2021 21:26

I couldn't even work out cost per wear of the faded La Senza night shirt that I'm wearing right now. My mum bought it for me about 25 years ago. Grin

Smiledwiththerisingsun · 27/01/2021 21:37

I once had a denim Jacket that I had for about 20 years.

A dress just died on me the other day I bought when I was 18. I'm 45.

Now that's some good cost per wear!

I have other stuff I buy & never wear 😱

MojoMoon · 28/01/2021 00:38

@MoiCnoi what wardrobe app do you use?

LunaTheCat · 28/01/2021 07:28

Smiled - I am just amazed it still fitted you!

MoiCnoi · 28/01/2021 07:30

@MojoMoon My closet. It's not bad. Has some limitations but definitely helps me put outfits together

MoiCnoi · 28/01/2021 07:31

Silly me- Your Closet not My Closet!!

BreakfastOfWaffles · 28/01/2021 07:47

As well as cost per wear, I also ask:

  • Do I feel good wearing this?
  • Can I make at least 3 outfits with it?
NeedWineNow · 28/01/2021 09:16

I was putting something away in my wardrobe last night and spied my battered and beloved old New Look cropped denim jacket. I've worn it so much that I imagine the cost per wear is pennies, and I'll still drag it out again this year. I've got a new one from GAP but funnily enough that doesn't seen to have the same appeal.
