Mascara & eye make up for very sensitive skin

Countrywalking · 25/01/2021 18:39

I have very very sensitive skin Sad with bad eczema and sometimes quite severe allergic reactions. In the past few months I've tried my normal make up but my eyes have swollen up, gone red and water and taken at least a week to calm down.
I can't even use E45 because it burns my skin.
I know the obvious is don't use make up but can anyone recommend eye make up, including mascara that is good for sensitive eyes and skin?

Thank you so much x

@Countrywalking Hi! You have my sympathies. I'm similar to you although not quite such severe reactions. I did without makeup for years because of eczema, but I'm slowly dipping my toe into the makeup scene again!... Do you know what you are allergic to in particular? What brand have you tried recently?

PainterInPeril · 25/01/2021 18:54

Oh, and another thing. Have you tried using Dermol 500? (on prescription) I find it very helpful. My skin has calmed down considerably (except for a nasty flare-up during the August "heatwave." It was only 25°C!)

Countrywalking · 25/01/2021 19:28

Thank you for your replies 🙂
PainterInPeril I don't know what it is. I tried Rimmel mascara and I had a bad reaction.
I've read that Burts bees use natural plant based products so I might try their eye makeup
Haven't tried Dermol 500, thank you for the suggestion.

Ah, Rimmel! That was what used to trigger my allergies/eczema too! I'm going to try Max Factor in the hope that it doesn't upset the applecart. As for Burt's bees products, I've never tried them because I have hayfever, and honey is another trigger!

Countrywalking · 26/01/2021 08:57

Glad to know Rimmel is a no no.
Gosh hadn't thought about the hay fever issue with Burts bees Sad its so difficult.
Ive actually really enjoyed lock down and not wearing make up but I think it's made my skin and eyes far more sensitive.
Apparently Clinique is good for sensitive skin and also bare minerals.

Yes, I've been thinking about trying bare minerals. And I'll have a look at Clinique. My problem is exacerbated by an intolerance to coconut oil which seems to be in so many brands now. Let's hope we can find something that works. I used to love wearing makeup!

Palavah · 26/01/2021 12:54

I have had the same problem. Is your skin under control now? If you're already having a flare then any make up will make it worse.

I suggest you start with just one product and see how you go with that. You can use dermol 500 to remove your make up as well.

PainterInPeril · 26/01/2021 13:24

Yes, Dermol 500 is fantastic stuff. It's an antibacterial moisturiser but you can also use it as handwash, facewash, shower crème, shampoo....oh, and it's great as a deodorant too!... (I feel like I'm making a commercial!Grin)

Ilia mascara is fab, really makes my lashes look sooo long and doesn't clump. It's also a clean beauty brand so no nasties etc

newtb · 26/01/2021 17:49

I find CMB (Colour me beautiful) fine - have incredibly dry sensitive skin. In the past I've tried Max Factor hypoallergenic eye shadow and by 10am had rubbed it all off.

Strangely, Make up academy from Superdrug doesn't irritate.

Countrywalking · 26/01/2021 20:27

Good to know that you can use Dermol 500 gets rid of make up as any make up removers destroy my skin and I react.
I have started to develop a big red patch on my cheek that looks like a rash ,like I've been slapped and gross I know lots of nasty deep spots, like pustules... Only on one side.
Do you think this is related to eczema? And my intolerances?
I find pure tea tree oil relieves it.

Yep I need to start with one make up product at a time.

Have you seen a GP? Could be roscea?

Palavah · 26/01/2021 20:41

*rosacea

BrainFoggerty · 26/01/2021 21:20

I get a lot of allergic reactions too especially with mascara so have gone as natural as possible with no nasties. Lavera is fine for mascara although not the best in the world as doesn't enhance lashes like typical brands. I like their lipstick too. Lily Lolo eyeshadow & pencils are lovely. Bare minerals face make up & lipstick is good - plus they will take it back/refund if you react although they don't shout about it.

BrainFoggerty · 26/01/2021 21:22

I did have rosacea but it was caused by my moisturiser which I'd been using for 6mths or more - an organic plant based one but I reacted to something in it. Once I switched it cleared up.

Beetlebum1981 · 26/01/2021 21:37

I've found Clinique Lash Power mascara to be great. Still trying to find eyeshadow that my eyes can tolerate.

Countrywalking · 27/01/2021 14:51

Thanks ladies. I have wondered if it is Rosacea.
