Face wash for eczema prone teenage skin?

Cupidity · 24/01/2021 10:56

DD (11) is starting puberty - her hair is getting greasy more quickly, her face is starting to get a bit oily and spotty. So I want to buy her an amazing skin care face wash as she's getting a bit embarrassed by it.

The issue is that she has really sensitive skin on her face, it's really prone to eczema and will flare up with the wrong products. She's been using my Clinique facewash but has recently become sensitive to that and it's no longer any good.

I will be willing to pay £££££ for the right product - something that removes the oil and greasy-ness so she stops getting spots, but equally something that doesn't remove the oil and dry out her skin!

Her skin is very odd with moisturizer as well. Often she can use something for a week or two but will then start reacting to it.

We have the urban veda one. Seems nice.

The store does moisturisers too.

Hi OP

I can't speak for teenage skin but I have eczema prone sensitive skin and I now use this Moogoo wash. I also used to use Clinique but stopped being able to tolerate it and after various trials of things this is the best I've found so far (Sorry not good at neat links!)

moogooskincare.co.uk/catalog/product/view/_ignore_category/1/id/54/s/milk-wash/

You just use a tiny bit in order to get it to foam up with some water on your hands (which is how i use it) or if you prefer it as a cream cleanser you use a big pump of it and it doesn't foam much. I've found it v cleansing without drying and my monthly hormonal spots seem to be lessening too. I use it on my body as well as face, a bottle lasts ages.

For moisturizing after I've switched to the Moo Goo eczema cream with ceramides - a teensy bit as it is v rich. They have lots of others you could check out and I think they do sampler trial packs but this combo works really well for me.

Cetaphil also does an eczema prone range with ceramides which I think is pretty good and non-irritating but my skin seems to prefer the Moo Goo.

I hope you and your DD can find something that works for her - eczema is no fun at all! Best of luck x

Oh but I would also say - if she has been using an exfoliator of any kind, stop that and see if things improve. My skin barrier is awful (atopic eczema type) and any scrub or other physical exfoliator just makes things worse. For very sensitive skin I think less interference / fewer products is almost always better.

La Roche Posay Effaclar range or its Toleriane foaming face wash.Boots have it. Ceravie have a good foaming cleanser too. If you have the ££££ a dermatologist would be worth it. Meantime, stay out the sun /use sunscreen because uv rays can cause the acne to worsen and the marks to darken leaving longterm disfigurement.

I have eczema and very sensitive skin, I like products by Simple and use their facial wash and moisturiser (the one that has SPF).

AlexaShutUp · 24/01/2021 12:22

My 15yo used to get bad eczema on her face. Using Cerave to wash her face has pretty much eliminated the problem. She found it herself after doing loads of research on the internet. I'd highly recommend giving it a try.

BabyBee93 · 24/01/2021 14:26

Another vote for Simple and CeraVe...the Simple gel wash is perfect and doesn't dry out the skin (I use with a Clarisonic face brush, it has worked wonders).

The CeraVe foaming cleanser is also a good one, along with their day cream (plus it contains SPF20, bonus!). Hormonal acne is different to environmental acne though, so would agree with a PP who advised a dermatologist if you're willing so splash out. Hope your DD comes right, it's an awful age to be self conscious about your skin xx

(Also, switch her to a silk/satin pillowcase. Not only do they feel luxurious but are much kinder on the skin and hair than regular cotton)

AlexaShutUp · 24/01/2021 14:39

YY to silk pillowcase.

It's not acne type spots yet, just oily skin type whiteheads and occasionally a blackhead. I think that if we continue to struggle with her skin a dermatologist will be worth visiting

Will order a bunch of the products recommend above and see if we have any joy with them. Often her skin is fine with something and then suddenly starts to react to it so will be good to have a selection of washes in the cupboard.

My DD is also 11 and has hit puberty, very spot prone. She uses the cerave hydrating face wash - white with the green detailing. It is very gentle. She uses it with a microfibre face cloth. We really notice when she's not been doing it!

I had ezcema as a child. This started in very gentle organic products - not that easy to find many many years ago. My face is very sensitive and many of the creams etc made my skin feel like it was burning - remember Oil of Olay.
What worked for me was absolute minimum products - and those with the minimum ingredients.
Dr Hauszka - some of Neals Yard
But as a teenager I still wanted to wear make up and could source most things in the health shop
Then I became very interested in cruelty free make up
Im in my mid 50s and very blessed to have very few wrinkles apart a few on my forehead where I applied a steroid Benovate
Do lots of research before you let your daughter put anything on her face
Gentle warm water is best to wash - nothing harsh.
Also diet really helps
My son cut out cows milk and it cleared his ezcema.
A Dr Hauszka beauty therapist can prescribe a very gentle cleansing and mosturising routine

Joyful65 · 25/01/2021 21:17

sorry - started an interest in very gentle organic products...hope that makes better sense. I should have previewed

Divebar · 25/01/2021 21:21

I watched a talk with a skincare lady recently regarding teenage skin and she recommended CeraVe. She also said to buy a pile of muslin cloths or face cloths and to use a clean one every day. Avoid touching the face as much as possible.

Cupidity · 30/01/2021 14:19

I can't thank you all enough. Boots had a 3 for 2 offer on so I bought 6 different face washes and moisturisers from LaRoche and Cerave. Also got the simple face wash.

Her skin is already so much happier after 2 days of the la Roche. The la Roche toleriane ultra cream has so been fab on her elbow creases eczema.

@Joyful65 yes, her eczema is also diet linked. Eggs and milk are 2 obvious triggers, so are raw tomatoes (but not cooked one), etc. I think being in the house with the central heating on also isn't great for her skin but lock down in winter makes things difficult.

Second Joyful65. My husband gets stress related eczema on his face. He tried washing his face with the diluted lavender bath from Dry Hauschka on a muslin and the results were impressive. He now uses lavender essential oil and his skin has improved beyond recognition.
MrsSchadenfreude · 31/01/2021 07:48

La Roche Posay is excellent. I also use their Lipikar cream for dry and itchy skin. Cetaphil and CeraVe are also good face washes.
