How to stay warm at home without feeling frumpy

Is this possible? I seem to live in leggings and big jumpers and cardigans at home, we have the heating on low pretty much 24/7 so it's warm but I still don't feel fully warm without a jumper. Therefore I feel frumpy too. How do you keep warm at home? I miss wearing all my nice clothes! But it's not warm enough!

Well, frumpy is such a ridiculous word anyway that I really don't think you should be worrying about it.

I wear lace camisoles from Jigsaw as a first layer, then a long sleeved turtle neck, then a dress and cardigan, or a thin jumper and a merino cardigan with trousers. Warm socks and slippers are the most important thing though.

Get less frumpy cardigans? Wear fancy underwear?

NotMeNoNo · 23/01/2021 20:27

You need better jumpers. Merino or ski thermals as a thin under layer then a real wool, alpaca or cashmere sweater, Turtle doves mittens, scarf/snood.

Really nice loungewear - I’ve got a few sets which have been quite reasonable (in the style/ASOS), nice undies (for comfort Stripe and Stare), Sweaty Betty stuff - all with clean blow dried hair, moisturised skin and tidy nails. This works for me anyway!

BlueSussex · 23/01/2021 20:32

I throw a big blanket over myself whilst I am not on screen Grin

I am too tight to put the heating on all day. I do have some nice cashmere jumpers though which are soft and light and warm. I wear really thick fleece joggers on my bottom half (from Monki)

absolutelyknackeredcow · 23/01/2021 20:33

I lived in Russia for a while and now live in a drafty old house.
Cashmere is your friend - uniglo is reasonable. I wear mine fitted. I also have think silk leggings that go under jeans on cold days.

Very warm thermals - Uniqlo also good and a lace cami

So today I have cashmere jumper, thermal top, cami, bra

I wear uniqlo heattech under my usual clothes. So under a nice shirt, dress or thin jumper so that I don’t feel frumpy or too casual on work video conferences.

Otherplans · 23/01/2021 21:13

@absolutelyknackeredcow do you mind saying where you get your silk leggings from?

absolutelyknackeredcow · 23/01/2021 22:29

They were a gift but they do work

Notcontent · 23/01/2021 23:22

I am the same. I have the heating on but my house is pretty cold anyway, so I wear lots of layers. Teen dd and I have a bit of a uniform at the moment - Uniqlo heattech top, some sort of baggy woolly jumper and jogger/leggings bottoms. We try to wear reasonably nice jumpers to elevate the whole look!

viques · 23/01/2021 23:28

Thin layers do it. Uniqlo leggings under trousers, Uniqlo top, another long sleeved top then a cashmere jumper and a thin cardigan, two pairs of thin socks. That’s plenty if I am moving around, if I need to be sitting for a while then a shawl over my shoulders and a throw over my lower half. Heating is off during the day until about five o clock.

Paapa · 23/01/2021 23:49

I struggled with exactly the same.
I tried to fix it with warm underlayers, but it didn't really work for me. I'd be lovely and warm in the (very cold) house, but I often go out during the day and I walk everywhere, and I'd get far too hot when moving about.
This then meant that before I went out I'd have to undress, remove the underlayer, then re-dress. Then the reverse when I got back. Total ball ache.

What really fixed it for me was ditching all synthetic fibres and swapping it for wool and cashmere. I scoured the charity shops for most of it (I'm on a budget).
I was vegan for years so didn't used to buy either, plus I used to find wool itchy, so I hadn't worn them for two decades. I am AMAZED at how much of a difference they make.
I find silk really sweaty though. Not a fan.

RenardeRenarde · 24/01/2021 01:15

Would you feel nicer in a knitted dress rather than a jumper? I always think a dress feels more “done” than a big jumper but it still effectively does the same job.

grassisjeweled · 24/01/2021 01:22

I have a huge Cape type affair that is really warm when flung around me. That, leggings, and a thin polo neck, with socks and slippers and I'm toasty

ZaraW · 24/01/2021 06:40

I wear merino thermals. If it gets too cold I have a chunky knit alpaca cardigan.
