Is lockdown making anyone reevaluate their entire wardrobe?

Just that really.

I have heaps of beautiful clothes, but haven’t worn them for ages. (Not only due to COVID, but also having 2 very young children).

Makes me think it’s crazy to have heaps of clothes that I might wear at some point...

I’m wearing “nice” clothes, makeup, and perfume every day, however things which I wore for work are sitting untouched since March. I don’t have a smart-smart work wardrobe - lots of cropped wide leg trousers and culottes, mini-ish skirts, but with trainers or DM monkey boots at this time of year. I have beautiful wool wide leg crops from Cos that I really miss wearing, but they are dry clean only, and our white cat has taken to sleeping in my work chair...

My typical day now is jeans and cosy jumper, and sometimes after lunch I might sub in lounge pants. I’m on camera teaching live most of the day (lecturer) but figure no-one sees my lower quarters! I can’t wait for it to warm up a bit above get back into dresses though.

No I’ve been buying lots of lovely clothes used from eBay, because they are really cheap at the moment. Think Coast dress for £2.50.
One day I shall go to the ball or at least on a cruise and I will be well prepared.

harknesswitch · 21/01/2021 22:34

I've finally stopped buying clothes. I look at things online and think 'ohhh that's nice, I'll buy it' then reality hits and I realise I won't bloody wear it. Shoes and boots are my thing but I've bought none for months now as I just don't wear them. I have bought two pairs of slippers tho

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 21/01/2021 22:54

I have re-evaluated and got rid of older stuff and things passed their best. But l'm not getting rid of all my smart things.

tootsytoo · 21/01/2021 22:58

Me and worst thing is I keep buying more?!! Why I don't know - well I do now it's boredom.

eurochick · 21/01/2021 23:07

@JMAngel1 fleece lined leather leggings? Tell me more!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 22/01/2021 00:23

I’m re-evaluating my wardrobe in that I don’t have enough properly casual clothes. I never have - I’ve usually had one or two pairs of jeans at a time plus lots of skirts/dresses/shorts. I wear skirts and dresses to work and to fun weekend activities like going out for meals, round to friends etc. But at home I wear jeans because I’ve got a dog and need to go on long muddy walks a lot. Ergo, in lockdown I need more jeans! I also need to lose weight to get back into some of said jeans - I have three pairs that are currently too small.

So what I’ve done is buy more casual clothes. Over the summer it was casual skirts (a chambray one with pockets, and a lovely orange seersucker H&M one), shorts, and cropped jeans. Then jeans and dungarees. Plus a few jumpers. Currently eyeing up a maxi lambs wool cardigan from Cos.

I did fill an IKEA bag with work clothes that I just don’t like, but I kept all my favourite ones.

Great thread!

For those who have discarded their 'work' and 'special occasion' clothes, will you replace these when lockdown ends?

I recently got rid of clothes that look worn and unflattering. I had a habit of buying some items because they were on sale and not because I necessarily liked them.

blanketyblankpen · 22/01/2021 07:43

Yes, I'm investing in more pyjamas.

RedCyclamens · 22/01/2021 07:58

I reviewed all my clothes and have separated the ones that look worn out / old. Waiting for charity shops to open to donate these. Then have another pile of clothes for the clothes bin. I have nt discarded my work clothes but thinking about padding up loungewear and night wear.

JMAngel1 · 22/01/2021 08:06

@eurochick
Sorry, they're ancient from H&M - I reach for them whenever I have to leave the house as they're so toasty and look good. I got 2 pairs of wide leg tailored trousers to try to mix it up, but when it's cold outside, the leggings win every time!

Those of you who wear your lovely clothes at home, how do you stay warm? A slip dress and a cardigan - I would be shivering!
Today, I'm wearing a boob tube, long sleeved scoop neck, cashmere jumper then a huge batwing midi cardigan over the top with fleece joggers. I look like a Michelin man!

Morgan12 · 22/01/2021 08:14

Yep I haven't worn jeans since March and I don't intend to ever wear them again. So when we are allowed out again I plan to build a new wardrobe around no jeans.

I now have some nice loungewear and have bought a few pairs of nice pj's too. I just rotate them for now. And stick on leggings for my walk.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 22/01/2021 08:27

I’ve been living in wide or barrel-leg jeans, or mom jeans. Leggings don’t suit me and they’re too cold - it’s minus 2 outside! I haven’t worn skinnies in 2 years anyway - they are so uncomfortable once you stop being used to them. My life also now revolves around dog-walking so it has to be jeans for warmth. I have cleared out a lot of bobbly old clothes and some things I rarely wore, but I hope to be able to wear some of my work clothes again some day - they’re smart-casual so nothing like suits, but nice blouses with jeans, or smartish wool trousers with a jumper, or a midi dress. I’ve worn a midi dress once since autumn hit and was freezing. I can also wear most things I’d wear to work for meeting friends etc, so they should get worn again eventually.

hippospot · 22/01/2021 09:08

I'm only doing the sort of cull I do every year or two, getting rid of tired/damaged/ill fitting things or things I really don't love. My work dress code wasn't smart-smart and at some point I WILL be back in my workplace, so no point getting rid of anything.

I've been looking through my cupboards and noting items that I need to replace and will do some specific online shopping for those (but will try to avoid any impulse buys). Trying to focus on quality not quantity.

I am thoroughly bored of wearing the same few comfy clothes all day every day but hey ho!

Looking forward to restaurants, holidays, parties etc and the opportunity to wear some of the lovely things I own (and trying to stay the same size in the meantime!)

limesoda · 22/01/2021 09:21

It's been a bit of a lovely activity for me in this new year actually. I Marie Kondo'd a few years ago, and never spent time thinking about what I actually wanted to update my wardrobe with, so it's been a fairly slapdash mix of things that have been the best of a bad bunch when I finally get sick of no clothes and go on a splurge.

I did a thing from a blog recommended on here called midlifechic. I'm mid 30s rather than the suggested over 40, but it worked really well for me, and made me realise I do spend quite a lot of time outside, so maybe some decent jeans and nice boots are worth it. See also a small amount of lounge wear for nights in front of the telly. It's also made me think about colours and styles that suit or don't suit me as well. The other thing is made me do is pay less attention to retailers; I always assumed I'd buy a leather mini skirt somewhere like all saints, turns out my perfect shape and size was to be found in the boden sale 😂

I've allocated a small bit of monthly budget and am going to start working my way through my shopping list. I know I'll get diverted on the way, but hopefully the budget will force me to actually spend money on some basics, and consider bigger purchases a bit more.

Its actually made me really excited about clothes again. I really want to join one of the ongoing threads on here so I can talk about it with other people 😂

ParisJeTAime · 22/01/2021 09:38

Yes, I am exactly the same op. I have put all my naice things away into storage! I now have quite a small (by my standards) capsule, where most things go together and everything suits my lifestyle.

I do not need dresses which I can't roll around on the floor in (SAHM with young dcs), high heels, office wear, going 'out out' dresses or any more handbags!

I stick to a small number of colours and have a bit of a uniform:

Winter; skinny jeans tucked into knee boots, long sleeved cotton tees and mens oversized woollen v neck jumpers. Ankle length down coat for really cold days, rain coat for other days.

Spring / Autumn; dresses and skirts with tees, tights, ankle boots and a jacket.

Summer; as above, but no tights or jacket. Trainers instead of boots.

Sometimes I wear straight cut jeans turned up with trainers or flats, all year round, instead of the other bottoms, but in winter only on dry and warmer days or indoors.

I have one dressy dress and 'sensible heels' (channelling my granny Grin), which does for pretty much any occasion.

ParisJeTAime · 22/01/2021 09:43

Oh accessories; one scarf which goes with both of my coats, one pair of gloves, one cashmere beanie, a Kipling backpack (for grocery shopping on foot or days out when allowed), a small leather satchel for normal errands, a smaller one, for if I ever go to a bar again.

Jewellery I am not capsuling, as a lot of it has sentimental value.

Annasgirl · 22/01/2021 09:52

Yes OP, I am the same. I have spent lockdown in leggings and sweatshirts (I work from home) and I invested in some really nice ones (Sweaty Betty - like every second person in my locale!!!).

For those of you saying that you will just take out your old stuff once you go back to the office, I actually think that fashion will have changed and people will wear different styles. I have a friend who works in international finance and has a very high end corporate wardrobe. Because she spends a lot on her clothes, she keeps them. But when we go through her wardrobe we find lots of items that she would no longer wear because it 'doesn't look right anymore" - that is how even corporate fashion changes subtly over a 5 year period.

I also agree with the person who said I am never going to wear jeans again!!!
