Dermarolling - would it help my skin? (pics included)

I'm autistic and for over 20 years have had a skin/ spot picking obsession (it's like a stim for me).

My face has taken an absolute battering and the skin is starting to look awful. Pitted, large pores, orange peel type etc.

I'm putting in place a skin care routine (cleanse, tone, mosituruse etc) but I don't think that will really address the damage?

Thinking of trying dermarolling. Has anyone tried this and had success? Is it likely to help me? Or is there anything else to try?

Have you tried acids? These will (I've forgot the technical term) erode the top skin surface away and make the skin make regenerative cells to repair damage.
I think derma rollers aim to do the same thing by making tiny abrasions to get the regeneration without the chemicals.
You could also try a chemical peel depending on how sensitive your skin is and how desperate you are.

Try a Gua Sha stone- under £10 on amazon and then use youtube to follow a little routine. I find it more relaxing but a similar effect to dermarolling, and also easier to clean it. Also try a hyaluronic acid - the poppy austin one one amazon is good but theres lot to choose from- its so lovely, light and hydrating for any skin type and has really helped the surface of my skin feel and look glowy. I also use it on my arms - where like you, i pick the little spots that are on them!

SaveMySkin · 18/01/2021 17:42

Thank you both. I think I saw those stones on tv last night. Are they like the jade ones?

I haven't tried an acid, I'll give that a go.

I also pick my arms @Mojitomogul since the 1st lockdown it got really bad and now they look awful Sad

Yes you can get jade ones, mines a black one- think its made from volcanic ash or something! But it feels lovely and smooth on the skin, definitely use with some facial oil so it doesnt pull uncomfortably on the skin. Massage can do absolute wonders for the skin.
Its so hard to not pick your arms isnt it, i have tried so hard to stop- a few weeks ago mine looked terrible and inflamed! Its helped now ive moved to a gluten free diet as was disgnosed coeliac, so its reduced the amount of spots i get on my arms in general, but i have to try so hard not to pick them. Often i wear long sleeves so i can't look at or feels them to pick! Body brushing helps a bit too.

SaveMySkin · 18/01/2021 20:00

Thank you @Mojitomogul . Is there a particular face oil you use?

Good point about long sleeves! I might try that. Things have improved a bit recently but sadly I'm left with the scars. Hoping they'll fade but maybe that's wishful thinking.

I tried beta blockers but they didn't really help the arm picking, they did ease the anxiety a bit but left me with no motivation which isn't good as I'm studying currently

Sorry lste response! I like rosehip oil, or the garnier hemp oil is nice. I try to pick one with the fewest ingredients!

RonaldMcDonald · 23/01/2021 11:11

Try something with a high urea concentrate for your arms.
It seems to make the smooth within months, ending the picking and improving the skin

I like derma rolling but it takes time to see difference. I helped massively with my skin but I also had a chemical peel - I had pitting due to acne.
Derma rolling means the scarring isn’t visible now

Retin-A might also do what you need 🤷🏼‍♀️

SaveMySkin · 23/01/2021 22:19

Thanks both. I picked up something from Amazon but haven't tried it yet. It whiffs a bit!

I have purchased a jade roller and gua sha stone set. I've used the roller for the past 2 days and it's quite relaxing. not sure if it will do anything but we'll see

I might try the dermarolling too. @RonaldMcDonald does it hurt a lot?

No and it shouldn’t make your face bleed - my friend does it and it does but she has it all arse about face
Trinny has some good videos on it. I’ve been doing it for ages now and also do it under my chin etc now
For me it was like everything I started a little and the built it up. I genuinely think it works
