Wigs for fun and crap hair - anyone a convert?

I’ve got thin rubbish hair, worse since menopause.

I’m really tempted to buy a wig, especially as now I’ve got awful roots.

Can anyone give advice? I don’t want anything outrageous, just something natural looking that doesn’t cost a fortune.

I have been interested in the same recently but the natural looking wigs/toppers I’ve seen are just so expensive so can’t afford one right now

Personally I’m more interested in the toppers as I have thinning receding crown but the ends of my hair are fine. Plus I wonder if wigs feel a bit heavy / hot?

I’ve been looking into this lately, my hair is thin from years of wearing extensions.

My worry with wigs is that you can always tell, it’s the hairline, even the expensive ones are noticeable.

I’ve started looking into crown toppers instead, but haven’t bit the bullet yet. It’s a big decision, especially when they’re so expensive for a good one.

If you keep loose hair from your brush as you go (old fashioned hair brush sets would have a special box to keep them in) you can make your own ‘hair rat’.

No cost, no issues matching colour & a handy thing to bulk out various styles because its more flexible than the foam doughnuts.

Its a good half way house between wig/no wig and won’t damage hair in any way.

PrancingQueen · 18/01/2021 14:17

Wow @BarefootInTheMoonlitSnow I have never heard of this, but it makes sense I suppose!

I’m losing so much though, I’d have more ‘hair rat’ than hair Confused

I too had extensions for fullness @SassenachWitch and they did so much damage that I’d never go there again.

I’m hoping that a wig with a fringe would be less noticeable?

I got a few cheapo wigs from Amazon last year, I've just started them wearing them after a self done hairdressing disaster. Love them! So little effort for so much reward.

Cocolapew · 18/01/2021 15:57

If you're on Facebook look at Mrs Gloss and the Goss. A lot of people show their Amazon wigs on there, I'm sure if you did a search they would come up. They usually look really good Smile

PrancingQueen · 18/01/2021 18:58

@8lue8ird - I’ve had a look at a few cheapie ones and sent off for a couple. We’ll see!
Were the ones you ordered like your own hair or very different? Do you tell people they’re wigs if people comment?

@Cocolapew - thank you, I’ll have a look!

There’s a mid-life youtuber called Sugar Puff and Fluff and she’s got wig reviews.

What about a halo hair extension? If your hair is particularly fine there is one called halo lite.

The, the ones I have ordered are all pretty long or shoulderlength, I found those the ones that look more natural.

I have a couple of lace front ones which look good on their own but I have some non-lace front ones which I'm not brave enough to wear without a hat, but they do look really good anyway.

Nobody has noticed or commented but it's probably quite obvious to people who know because my own hair is only an inch long all over. Even my kids think they look okay and they are brutally honest.

PrancingQueen · 19/01/2021 15:44

Thanks for the ideas!
I’ve subscribed to SP&F on You Tube and will investigate halo hair extensions too.

What about hair replacement systems? Expensive but bit longer term than taking a wig on/off every day.

If extensions are ruining your hair it's likely the method, both me and my mum (she's 52) have wore them for years. My mum wears 1 row of weft hair and her hair is the longest/healthiest it's been. Individual extensions and bonds cause tension on smaller pieces of hair where as a Weft has equal weight distribution.

If not then toppers would look more natural

Cocolapew · 19/01/2021 17:08

The thing with wigs nowadays most people aren't trying to hide the fact they wear them, its like a fashion accessory now. A few younger women I work with have loads.
