Hair Loss Help

Hi,

I've been struggling with hair loss now for about 6 years. Thought is was post birth but 6 years later it's still shedding!

I've read a lot on here about all sorts of supplements but most of those depend on you knowing, for example, your iron level.

It's my 40th birthday in March. I'm thinking of paying to see someone privately as it's getting me down so much. Does anyone have any recommendations please?

Yes. Firstly get your ferritin levels checked (iron)- if its low- google florisene which is an iron supplement especially for low iron/hair loss.
Its very important you check your iron is low before starting as too much iron can be very toxic.

  1. Thyroid. Get that tested too- as underachieve thyroid can cause hair loss. Sea kelp is great for supporting thyroid.
  1. Hormones. Have that checked too as oestrogen dominance can also cause thinning hair.

If its shedding evenly all over your head (eg your pony tail is getting thinner and thinner) its more likely to be telogen effluviam. Causes of this include stress, illness, low iron etc

f its thinning just right on the top near the crown, its more likely to be androgenetic alopecia (which is a male pattern type hair loss largely genetic). Treatment for this is mainly minoxidil (and I'd add derma rolling too to make it more effective).

Personally I'd make an appointment with a trichologist to get a proper diagnosis before you do anything because until you know exactly whats causing it, its pointless taking anything. Good luck!

Thank you. Would a trichologist be able to organise those tests or is there another way?

Yes they would. You'd have to pay privately though.

You could ask your GP to do the blood tests on the NHS and then go to the trichologist with the results (that would reduce the costs) but it depends on your GP. Some GPs will take hair loss seriously and some wont, so its variable.

It annoys me as some GPs think its just about vanity when it really impacts mental health and self esteem. Its worth a try anyway.
