Highlighting hair at home

A combination of having a newborn and then lockdowns has meant I have not been able to get my hair hightlighted for 16 months. I am getting really fed up with it and wondering about home kits.

Has anyone used these and if you which ones are recommended? My DH will be doing it so it needs to be straightforward Wink. My hair is a horrible mousy brown and I like to go dark blonde. It is pretty long.

I have given up on highlighting for now as with the hairdressers being closed, I seem to have permanently dark roots. I have been dying my hair one colour using Nice and Easy, the colour seems to be lighter on the highlighted bits of my hair and I don't get the regrowth. I have a mousy brown hair colour and am using Ash Blonde - it is a bit dark for a couple of washes then the colours lightens.

esalon do a kit, I tried it and I got on well with it. They also have instructions on how to apply on youtube.

😬 lightening hair is the least straightforward service. Even trained hairdressers with salon products struggle at times. Highlights are especially complicated for an absolute novice.

I reckon he will do a shit job regardless of easy instructions...but if you go ahead please post photos haha

I did my daughter's hair during the first lock down, with a Jerome Russell kit that was recommended on here. She has long medium brown hair, and it looks great. Have never done anything like it before so was quite cautious, didn't do too much and didn't leave it on very long. Looks natural and will definitely be doing it again.

We used an old school highlights cap and then bought the developer and bleach powder on Amazon and away we went.

However, I do have some general background knowledge of hair, and I know my hair can take a shit tonne of bleach so breakage etc wasn't a massive concern

I've used Loreal kits before with no problems. The trick, for me with darker brown hair, is not leaving it on for too short a time, cause that makes it slightly orange cause it hasn't lightened it enough yet. As the kits are so cheap, you could always buy 2 and just do a few practice streaks one day with one kit, leaving each streak for a different length of time to see which works best. My hairdresser thought the colour was good but I did only do a sort of balayage thing and a few streaks at the front as opposed to trying to do a professional looking full head of highlights. I know my limits!

I use a wella kit, you can get it in tesco, I have been using it it for years in-between hairdressers, I last had it done at hairdressers last January, I decided last year that I was going to grow it out and go natural, but I felt so drab without some brightness around my face, so now I just use the kit, I put some along the top, a few at the front and at the back, I am happy with the look, I do have to leave it on longer than it says, ( around 50 mins) I leave it around 1 hour 15 min to get it really light blonde. Just do a strand test first.

What do you mean by some along the top?

I discovered this stuff last summer. Literally no skill involved, just pick out sections and smear it on, heat it up with a hairdryer (or sun). Repeat until you get the look you want. Lifts up to three shades on my dark blonde hair, looks natural on me but might be too golden for some.
