Dying bleached blonde hair brown

Can this be done well at home or should I wait until we can go back to the hairdressers.

I had my hair bleached and toned with silver/grey finish. It’s faded so so quickly. Last time at the salon when I said I wanted to go brown she said I needed something to do with pigment first. Would that be to put the pigment back in?

Is this something that can be realistically achieved at home or do I just need to wait patiently until we can get back in the salon?

I've done it but I've always dyed my own hair and it was very short, if it went wrong I just went shorter.
You need to put red back into your hair before you can go brown. I've done it by using 2 boxes of a reddy brown and another time by dyeing it red then brown on top.
Tbh if your hair is long or you'd be really upset if it went wrong I'd wait.
I'm a bit cavalier with my hair and haven't been to the hairdresser's in 30 years Smile

I went from blonde to light auburn at the salon very recently and I had a pre-toner on first because my blonde was that light she was worried it would not hold another colour very well.

Was she right? Did the blonde still come through really quickly? Yes, it still did!

I bought a few box dyes and did a strand test for each. I found one that I liked and 2 that I didn’t like the result of.

I then box dyed my hair with the chosen with colour and it’s turned out just like the salon result (a bit better I think lol) but after 4 washes I can see a lot of the blonde coming back through - luckily this looks like golden shimmery highlights so I actually like it. I’m guessing if you go brown at home you might end up with a muddy blonde brown - or a decent brown at first with this fading a little bit with every wash.

Do a strand test underneath your top layer of hair, wrap in foil so it doesn’t touch yourself own hair, and see what happens, that’s my advice for your next step.

Thanks Coco, did you put the two dyes on one after the other or wait a while in between?

Ah I didn’t actually think about the new colour fading and the blonde coming through. My hair is quite long so might see how it goes then cut it off if it goes wrong!

@KimKsButt are you sure? To go from long blonde hair to shorter brown hair - that’s quite a difference? Also think of all the money you’ve spent on the highlights to think of having them chopped off?

I’m just saying be sure it’s what you want! Smile

It’s would be easy to do at home. Obviously if it was the other way around and you were goin from brown to blonde then I would advise to go to the hairdressers. Just make sure you don’t miss any bits and also, keep a baby wipe at hand to wipe any excess dye off your forehead/ neck as it will stain of left for a ling period. Good luck!😁

I recently did it myself at home. Used a red semi permanent on my hair and then the next day went over that with a dark reddish brown, no problems at all!

Peanutbutterkitkats · 16/01/2021 20:22

I've done it, with a reddish dye first, then a couple of days later with a brown on top. Like pps the dye did fade and the blonde did come through but more like goldeny highlights.

I know, I’m just finding that it’s going brassy really quickly, also had roots painted a darker colour so im going to end up with crappy brassy multi coloured hair where my actual hair is growing through. I know deep down that shoving a box on top just means it’ll still be multi coloured just in different shades to before. I just don know what to do. I have tried bleach london shampoo which does lighten it but my hair is a bit candy flossy now! When it’s washed tomorrow I will upload a photo to see if it helps explain it better.

I used an ash brown so it didn't go green and it worked well.

PessimisticMissPiggy · 16/01/2021 20:36

I went from bleach blonde to brown with a box colour. I used a reddish toned brown with no problem. Result was a warm brown with some golden tones through it. Thankfully no khaki tones, which I was afraid of! Don’t forget to patch test.

IamNotDarling · 16/01/2021 20:38

Ash brown? That’s got no red tones at all so surely that is a higher risk of a grey/green tinge?

Clarabellawilliamson · 16/01/2021 20:41

Investigate gloss colours maybe? You could try different ones before committing to a permanent?

Beachlovingirl · 16/01/2021 20:43

You could put get a semi -perm dye that matches the root melt that was applied and see how that looks so your real roots will match your dyed root. That might help the feeling of it all getting a bit multi-coloured. As it grows you should end up with a kind of bayalage effect on the ends? I know exactly what you mean with the brassy ness coming through I have a toner at the salon and it’s all beautiful and then after literally one wash I feel like that effect has diminished. You could embrace more golden tones during lockdown?

Justkillmenow · 16/01/2021 20:47

I had a similar problem and I just put an ashy brown on top. No need to put red pigment on it beforehand, particularly if you don't enjoy red/brassy undertones in your hair. I got an extra bottle of hair dye and went I feel like it's fading I just mix a bit up of birth the developer and the colour with my shampoo and leave for ten minutes before rinsing. It's super easy and cheap.
Good luck!
