Non-mumsy mum coat - recommendations!

Pigtailsandall · 16/01/2021 09:07

I have a 15mo DC who loves roaming outdoors. My old winter coats are lovely woollen ones and not really suitable for picking up a muddy toddler!

Any recommendations for a coat for the playground and park which doesn't scream out playground mum? Going to the park is my main social event of the week so I'd still like to look nice!

Haha! You could look like a proper Mum and mini me with that get up!

@Pigtailsandall
I love that Ilse rainsuit (khaki)! My kind of utilitarian gear... Unfortunately I’m short, I’d def be mistaken for someone’s kid.

Yeah I bet none of the other mums would have it!

I like the slight biker leather look, it looks a tad shiny too.. it's the sort of thing that might look really cool or just totally off. Might see if it goes on sale and give it a try!

Grin @Osquito

I'm quite tall, and very curvy so coats are a funny fit on me sometimes. Hoping for the best with my new purchase!

Great to see you found one, their quality is supposed to be very good as well. Do you have a link to the one you chose? Thanks

Pigtailsandall · 24/01/2021 09:13

@LightOfAThousandStars
Yes of course. I bought it through John Lewis and it's not listed anymore but I got the last one in my size so might be it's sold out

Thanks @Pigtailsandall, that's a beautiful colour and coat, lucky you were able to get it in the sale!

I have tried a few coats to cope with all the time outdoors with the kids in all weather...the problem is they run around getting hot while you stand about getting cold, so you can't really avoid having a decent sensible coat.

I find that a lot of coats can look frumpy if they aren't long enough or otherwise don't fit well. Other issues are coats that have a waist, but the waist doesn't match your natural waist -fast track to that frumpy look and feeling.

The game changer for me was not buying a coat from anything other than TALL ranges. I'm 5'7.5" so not hugely tall and it wouldn't occur to me to shop tall for anything else, but for coats it makes all the difference -where the waist sits, where the length cuts on my legs.

I have a simple Seasalt coat from their tall range now and I get a lot of compliments and questions about it (where did you get it). I'm convinced that if I had the same coat from the regular range (I've had many like it) it would be just another meh, frumpy coat. Well fitting clothes just always look better/more expensive, I suppose.

Just placemarking to read later.

Stutterheim do many useful, all weather coats.

hammeringinmyhead · 29/01/2021 18:23

I know you've bought one but you made me laugh - I have a 2 year old and I wear an ancient swingy unisex military parka from Diesel that looks like this:

...with my Joules bee-print wellies. Grin

It's not waterproof. For wet days I dig out my Brakeburn rain coat which is very literal as it's covered in little rainclouds. I embrace the twee.

Pigtailsandall · 30/01/2021 09:21

@hammeringinmyhead by all means, embrace it! Twee and cute is just not for me. Being tall, broad-shouldered and busty I would look ridiculous anyway. Its interesting really, how that twee look seems to be de rigueur at our area but not clearly everywhere

Btw the Ilse Jacobsen coat I ended up getting is fab. Incredibly lightweight. Haven't tested it in proper rain yet but it did well in very blustery wind

Just to say I've got that Ilse Jacobsen coat. It's great, I live in a very rainy part of the UK. My children are grown, but I've seen a few younger mums in the area with them, so I think they are practical and do the job.
The whole "mumsy" thing is another debate, but generally mums have to dress in a practical way!

LaPampa · 30/01/2021 12:12

Where I live (rural & coastal) we get sideways rain most days. Or it feels like that anyway. My Didrikson parka is perfect as it’s actually waterproof. The fur round the edge btw stops the wind coming into the hood which makes it properly cosy in a gale which we also seem to get a lot of. It dries out pretty quickly.

Back when I did live in London and go to the same playground day in and day out there were a lot of belted puffa coats.

My eternal quest is boots that are warm and comfortable and waterproof but stylish. As we literally have water and mud flowing down our lane they have to be practical.

Maireas · 30/01/2021 12:16

Go for Ilse Jacobsen boots, @LaPampa. They're completely waterproof and mud proof and last years. You may or may not find them stylish! Very practical though.

LaPampa · 30/01/2021 12:41

Thanks @Maireas I didn’t know they made boots. Looking them up now!

Anoisagusaris · 30/01/2021 12:46

Wtf is a mumsy mum coat? A coat is a coat. A person is a person. I’ve never been able to tell if a person is a parent by the clothes they wear (unless covered in baby puke).

Are you basically asking for a nice coat suitable for outdoors? It has nothing to do with being a bloody mum!

Maireas · 30/01/2021 13:22

@LaPampa - I recommend the Blaze boots, black lace up. Sorry can't do link.

CeibaTree · 30/01/2021 13:41

I have https://www.celticandco.com/womens/womens-outerwear/wax-cotton-jackets/stay-wax-cotton-parka this coat. It's good for doing toddler type activities in the park, but also I'd wear it even if I wasn't a mum :)
