Hair washing frequency tips please

I have mid length straight hair just past me shoulders. I have always washed my hair every morning and I hate to say it sometimes if we went swimming pre Covid (2 or 3 times a week) I would even say my hair twice a day.

It's no surprise it looks greasy instantly if I don't wash it. So this lockdown and I want to try and get to washing it every other day, and want some tips on how to stop it looking so greasy and also how long will it take for my hair to get used to the new hair washing routine to not look so greasy ?

Thanks

Do you play with your hair a lot? That makes i look greasy quickly.
Try washing it, then tying it back, or wear a headband on the second day.
You get used to it quite quickly.

Mine was always looking greasy, I started using a different shampoo Aveeda rosemary & mint, I googled and it said this was one of the best for greasy hair and it did work, I also use dry shampoo some days, I am a messer though and I have to stop myself playing with my hair all the time as I make it worse

I wash twice a week, usually Wednesdays and Sundays. I have 'trained' my hair to go that length between washes. Although, especially in lockdown, when I'm not going out slightly greasy hair isn't a big deal. I have never washed everyday, used to be every other or every 2 days.

When you shampoo you strip the natural oils away, so the scalp reacts by producing more, by washing less frequently the scalp won't react so much and over-compensate, you may even find that your hair improves in condition. You just have to wait a few weeks/months for your body to adjust to the new washing pattern. As others have said touching and playing with your hair will make it greasier too.

I also heard from a hairdresser that you shampoo your roots only - this is where the grease and dirt it, the lengths are cleaned by the water and shampoo running down when you rinse, and you should only condition the lengths - this stops the scalp area getting so greasy, as it produces its own natural oils it doesn't need the conditioner.

I’ve trained mine to once a week now, I may even go longer. The trick has been to give it a good brush morning and night with a natural bristle hair brush. Day 3 onwards I wet my hair and put a treatment conditioner through it, I’ll do this too at night too if I feel like it needs it.

Unbelievably a week post wash and I don’t have greasy roots. I’m just finger drying it, not something that used to work when I washed it every other day. I actually feel like my hair has a chance of surviving not seeing a hairdresser for the next few months!

Aveda is fab.

I use a shampoo brush to really get the oil all out from the roots and it’s hairdresser clean afterwards.

If I wash my hair 3x with shampoo instead of twice, it's seems to remove more product build up and grease, looks bouncy and cleaner for the next two days after.

Do you use enough shampoo? I moved from a soft water area to an area with hard water, and I needed to use more shampoo.

I've been using a silicone free shampoo which seems to be keeping grease at bay longer but I have dandruff and need to wash my hair quite regularly for the health of my scalp
