teen beginner makeup

My DD will be 13 soon and I wanted to get her some beginner makeup as she is tentatively trying out some things (with not much success! eyeliner looks ridiculous!).

She's also self conscious about her acne so something that could cover it up without being caked on.

I don't want her wearing too much but she also wants to 'fit in' with her friends.

Any brand recommendations? Any starter kits I could get for her?

She does look a lot older than her age already so I don't want to draw attention to that, she's still just 13.

Revolution have several brands; Makeup Obsession and I ❤️ Revolution are aimed at the ‘younger’ end (I use them though and in my 40s!). Their main brand is pretty good too. Collection & Barry M have lots of on trend stuff and are purse-friendly. Superdrug often have 3 for 2 across all make up brands as well.

ChrissyPlummer · 14/01/2021 05:28

*Sorry, meant to say these are all available in Superdrug and you can usually mix and match on the 3 for 2 across brands.

boymum1x · 14/01/2021 05:44

Agree with @ChrissyPlummer they are really good brands to start with revolution is perfect as they do everything & cheap if you go on there website you can buy sets with a good variety of products
Also just a lilll tip which I found has helped me loads go on to you tube & look up 'make up tutorials' will help her learn how to apply properly x

forestsmurf · 14/01/2021 06:14

Make up tutorials will really help. That's why 14 year olds look like models now and I looked like I had tumbled through a department store make up counter at 14. Revolution make up is perfect for this.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/01/2021 07:38

Is her Dr treating the acne? It’s very treatable & the drs surgery’s are still open for business.

errorofjudgement · 14/01/2021 07:44

DD has very sensitive skin so we’ve always had to take care with make up and she loves the Benefit range. It’s a bit more costly but the quality is really good and most items seem to come with instructions on different ways to apply.
Also the colours are quite neutral/natural so easier to wear during the day.

DonLewis · 14/01/2021 07:48

I'd go for more expensive things like foundation, if she's thinking of mastering that.

But cheap and cheerful eye palettes as she learns what suits her. Revolution is a must! So cheap, decent quality.

Get her watching tutorials. She also needs a decent remover. Don't get her into bad habits with wipes and stuff! And decent skincare too.

Good makeup starts with good skin, moisturiser and techniques.

How exciting for her!

OP most teens like my DD 13 experiment at home creating wonderfully extravagant eyeshadow designs etc which they film or take photos of.

My DD wouldn't dream of leaving the house wearing it though. When she goes to school etc it's just mascara, concealer, powder and a plain lipgloss.

So let your DD experiment at home to her hearts content with Revolution palettes which are excellent dupes if the expensive brands like the James Charles Palette which every teen girl seemed to want a couple of Christmas ago.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 14/01/2021 09:49

Also my DD 13 got some antibiotics and acnecaide 5% from her GP which has helped with her spots. They do get worse just before her period along with her getting very tearful and upset over the most ridiculous things for a couple of days.

Thanks everyone

She hasn't been to the doctor yet. We've been trying a few over the counter creams like clearasil which appeared to be working but her skin is pretty bad at the moment.

What is the best makeup remover for teens?

OP posts:
Divebar · 14/01/2021 15:05

Oh please don’t use Clearasil - her skin will be fried. If you have Instagram go and watch Doesmybumlook40 as she did a video interview with a lady talking about teenage skincare. I recall it involved a daily clean muslin cloth / wash cloth and a hot cloth cleanser. There was another product recommended too but it’s not harsh like Clearasil.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/01/2021 15:42

I don’t think teen skin is vastly different in needs than adult skin, the acne’s a separate medical condition but it’s best to get that treated because like any other infection it can scar.

StepOutOfLine · 14/01/2021 15:42

Cerave cleanser or La Roche Posay Effaclar range. Both have salicylic acid. The acnecide is 5% benzoyl peroxide I think? So pretty harsh. She'll need a good soothing moisturizer- again Cerave or LRP Toleriane.

Make up- all the ranges in Superdrug are fab for teens. Clinique do a foundation for blemish prone skin which my teen DD likes.

DonLewis · 15/01/2021 07:28

Super drug do a hot cloth cleanser. And she could use a gentle micellar water remover for eye makeup.

Ds has suffered with his skin. He's had antibiotics for it, but as sson as he stopped taking them it was back. But we've learned to get on top of it a bit better. He washes his face with LRP effaclar foaming was and cleanses with either nip + fab salycilic or LRP effaclar. He also moisturises with aveeno. And uses a clay face pack every now and again. He also think the odd application of sudocream on breakouts helps.

Garnier micellar water and Cerave SA
