Not buying anything new - anyone got tips or like to join me?

I’ve been taking advantage of all this free time to sort my wardrobe and I’m at the stage where I’m pretty much happy with it and really don’t think I need anything else - not until the weather changes at least.

I’ve been keeping track of everything I’ve bought over the past few years and have realised that while I’ve made plenty of good buys I’ve wasted a lot of money too.

So I’m going cold turkey. Not sure exactly how long for and it won’t be easy with lovely new things tempting me from every corner of the internet (if not in real life).

Has anyone else done this or would like to?

My New Years Resolution is only to buy second hand this year. My wardrobe is bursting and I have more clothes in suitcases under the bed 😳. I love buying new clothes but really don't need anymore. I have also wasted £££.

So second hand is my solution and hopefully more sustainable . So far I have set alerts for long coveted items on ebay, installed Depop and placed a test order with I Second That. With charity shops closed any more ideas welcome!

Good luck OP!

Good idea! I’ve just discovered there’s another thread on this so if you haven’t seen it maybe worth a read www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/4120785-Toying-with-the-idea-of-not-buying-any-new-clothes-shoes-accessories-in-2021

Also not buying anything here...have sorted out clothes and de-cluttered etc and am wearing things I have found at the back of a cupboard etc....many items just need a re-style so am adding a scarf or different jacket....I have cleared my watch list on ebay of all clothing as often bought one item a week but generally I am only buying items if needed as hate junk and clutter and full wardrobes etc...

RichPetunia · 14/01/2021 02:44

I’m also doing it. - have far too many clothes. Also did it last year and got to May before buying anything. My weak spot is eBay and buying from there, problem is when the clothes arrive they rarely fit so ... I tend to clear out, refine and only buy clothes I can try on first or send back ( in 2022 all going well).

RichPetunia · 14/01/2021 02:46

Also, my clothes aren’t great quality, when I do start buying again would like to ‘ up the ante’.

AmberItsACertainty · 14/01/2021 03:13

I'll join you! I need to own less stuff. Lockdown has made me worse, buying things to cheer myself up.

SpeckledyHen · 14/01/2021 07:36

I’m doing this . Only spending money if I sell something first , then only buying pre-loved and at charity shops . I did it last year and got to September before I dipped into the bank account when I bought some boots as I draw the line at second hand foot ware.

I don’t have much to sell this year having sold a few bags and all my unworn clothes last year so ‘income’ this year won’t be as much . On the plus side I don’t need anything as I don’t go anywhere at the moment and have a well stocked wardrobe. I have extended the ‘ not buying ‘ to skincare, makeup and perfume too .
Shampoo, soap etc is coming out of the weekly grocery shopping.

I estimate that I have about £300 of stuff to sell this year which is half of lasts years.....

I have unsubscribed from all emails to resist temptation.

BlackDogBlues · 14/01/2021 07:56

I did this 3 years ago.
I bought nothing apart from a jumper, a pair of running trainers and some knickers.

It was a liberating feeling and had a permanent effect.

Things that helped. Unsubscribe from all selling emails. Sorting through my wardrobe. Taking a walk at lunchtime from work but not through the shops. Not looking on style & beauty. Finding other stuff to read on the internet than clothes sites.

I also used up all the toiletries I’d been given over the years and had a strict one in one out rule.

I saved about £5k. And I’m not even usually well dressed....I was better dressed from having to really think about the clothes I owned. Rather than panic buying yet another outfit that would get worn once.

Now I just need to sort out my plant buying habit.

I'm definitely trying this. I admit to having bought some things in the sales but that's it. I had a sort out of a couple of drawers at the weekend of underwear, summer wear and nightwear/ lounge wear and am intending to do my wardrobes this weekend. The only things I am intending to replace are new dance trainers, and also some new bras as I'm losing weight, and essential toiletries like eyemakeup remover. I've gone through my samples/holiday sizes of toiletries and I've certainly got enough to last me for the next six months!

StCharlotte · 14/01/2021 09:03

Every year I say I'm going to do this and every year I fail. WFH during the first lockdown and went mad online.

But since September the only thing I've bought is a couple of pairs of leggings as I'm WFH again. I think lockdown may have cured me!

I am very bored with my winter-at-home wardrobe though but haven't seen anything I like enough to add to it.

Thighdentitycrisis · 14/01/2021 09:11

I did this one year including buying second hand. The aim was to acquire less stuff, I lasted until September which was pretty good

I’m going to clear my wardrobe again soon (by Spring) but not stopping shopping

FlyingByTheSeatof · 14/01/2021 12:42

I didn't buy anything new for months last year but I've gone a bit crazy the last few days with items I need and want.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 14/01/2021 12:43

Mainly leggings actually like PP and an Oodie

XingMing · 14/01/2021 14:48

I did a replacement-only abstinence 2019 and 2020. By which I mean I replaced like-for-like, a white T-shirt to replace a shabby one, and new underwear as needed. It wasn't a complete ban on buying, but there had to be a very sound reason for every purchase.

However, after two years, I have replaced three pairs of jeans since October.

If you want to stop buying things, you need to stay away from the temptation of this board!
