If your scalp burns when you dye your hair?

What is an alternative hair dye that might not burn my scalp? It needs to cover stubborn grey to darkish brown. Henna? Or is that a recipe for disaster?

I think henna sends grey ginger. Have you developed an allergy?.

bingowingsmcgee · 13/01/2021 23:11

I think I must have. It was always uncomfortable, but it's painful burning now.

If hair is stubborn, you can soften it before the dye with just peroxide, the bottle that comes in the box....apply only that to the grey areas and then mix as normal but it shouldnt burn....i mix my own colours with peroxide so havent used a box dye for years.

And Henna will make it go ginger orange !

Marcipex · 13/01/2021 23:28

I think you shouldn’t use the dye. An allergic reaction can be v v dangerous.

Try not washing your hair for as long as possible before dying it. Your skins natural oils will protect from the burning sensation.

You could try It's Pure Organics herbal hair colour - it's available in various colours including natural brown, dark brown and very dark brown. I think it's made from henna combined with indigo and other natural ingredients. It worked for me when I became allergic to regular dye. It does work to cover grey. Application time is longer than the usual dyes though...I usually leave mine on for 3 or more hours.

I used to have this and my hairdresser changed dyes. I think it was a Schwarzkopf one but if you go on to one of the hair dying sites you should see a section for ammonia free.
I also let my hair get really greasy before dying it as it protects the scalp.

As a pp said, allergic reactions can be dangerous and hair dye has been known to trigger anaphylactic reactions. It's usually PPD or PTD in dark hair dye that people are/become allergic to. I'd stop using the dye OP and definitely patch test any others you try. I had to change to using henna/indigo as I mentioned above. I couldn't tolerate any PPD no matter how low the concentration.

Try Daniel Field - website says he is doing free consultations online at the moment. Specialises in allergy/sensitivities.

Can recommend his water colour range but you need at least x2 packs if you have thick hair. Covers my grey very well - and doesn’t leave it one dimensional flat box colour. I was skeptical after reading some bad reviews/you tube but I get great coverage.

I gave up colouring my hair when I reached the point you are at. But in hindsight, I should have tried non amonia semi permanent because they actually give a great shine and do well over grey.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'm going to research all these options.

You can get brown henna. Lush sell various colours: reds, brown, black.

superstar63 · 14/01/2021 13:07

What would be a good non ammonia semi permanent dye please? I am growing out the grey but would like it to blend a bit more with the light brown as i have two inches of roots and think a semi would blend it in but only be a temporary while the rest grows out.

I have a very sensitive scalp too. My hairdresser has found one dye that isn't too bad and I try to go with my hair unwashed for a couple of days so the scalp oil provides some protection. My hairdresser also rarely uses heat.
