Make up for my new drier and older skin

polkadotpjs · 08/01/2021 20:24

Almost overnight I feel like I've aged. My usual make up would be foundation (very very pale so a light shade), powder, bronzer (well some body shop thing with pink and bronze and peach in it) or quick flick of blush , nude eyeshadows and brown liner and mascara. Sometimes lip gloss or tinted balm. Pointless these days with mask wearing

My nose has little white greasy worms growing out of it - white not blackheads or those something filaments? Pores huge and I just look shit. I think I need Moore dewy stuff and creams and was toying with the Trinny London miracle blur and some other creamy stuff. Obviously can't go to a counter and get advice but need my face to look better for my own mental health. I used to sweep on a bit of foundation and had my lashes tinted and brows done and with eyeshadow I looked done. Now I look weird.

Do you use a primer and concealer ? They make a heck of a difference !

polkadotpjs · 08/01/2021 20:52

I have three primers and they seem to either flake or slide around. The Benefit one is ok but not noticeably better than foundation alone. Maybe I need a new one?

Firstly download the Boots App as there's all the skincare products you will need in one place.

At night & in the morning I would use a cream cleanser on dry skin with an alcohol free toner to cleanse your skin (I find a cheap range like Simple to be ok).
Then apply a decent serum.
Clinique Smart Repair serum is nice.
Followed by a either nice anti ageing day cream with at least spf15. Or a decent night cream.
My favourite brands are Clinique & Boots No7 but other posters will have more ideas.

For your pores & blackheads there are face masks that you can use at night to target these issues, look online.

After your daytime skincare is done you should apply a Primer to your face to use as a base for makeup or even just on its own. The right Primer smoothes out pores, stops shine & makes your skin look good.

Benefit sell one called Porefessional, which is quite good, Boots No7 primers are good, I currently use Soap & Glory primer.
There are so many.

I prefer using BB cream to foundation over my primer, I use Boots No7 BB cream for dry skin which is a tinted cream that blurs out imperfections.

Sorry @polkadotpjs didn't see your last post re benefit

How old are you? I'm 38 and I've definitely had to alter my products! I'm a lot drier but luckily I still get lots of hormonal zits Hmm

Anyway, the products I like a lot:

  • Erborian BB cream. They do a CC cream too but the BB is better. It's so moist and glowy, it genuinely looks like skin
  • Silicone primer (I've got a cheap Collection one, but any like the baby skin or whatever). I use it over my foundation, dabbed gently with a damp sponge on the shinier bits
  • Revolution fast foundation is also good and a LOT more affordable!
  • Glossier stretch concealer is fucking amazing - I thought it was going to be so crap, but it's just lovely. Blends beautifully, looks natural, sets well
  • Hourglass finishing powder - I have the yellowy one which I don't love but is the best for my skin. I've also got a Delilah lustre powder which is similar but I haven't played with it yet

It might be better to up your skincare a bit though. I've found using The Ordinary peel every three days, and using Glossier Futuredew (which for me is good as a primer) as well as some other stuff. I've tried LOTS of stuff! I've always had massive shitty pores though so no real change there Grin

I've just been given some origins mini facial products to try. I like the eye cream and spit cream. I too get spots despite being 45.
Maybe I need some acid of some sort. I'm sure I posted about my white head thjngs before. They're fascinating. More for Sporner corner maybe. But I don't need to squeeze much and they come out like little Spätzle dumplings from a mould. Will have to find a pic to show what I mean. My skin used to be lovely and porcelain like

Look at Nadine Baggott on YouTube. She is 57 and looks amazing and has loads of great advice, not all ££££ either.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/01/2021 21:36

If you’re still breaking out ring your dr, you don’t have to put up with hormonal spots they can help you.

I would start a retinol to try and preserve collagen and get a red light led mask for home use. You’ll need a proper sunblock in the morning.

The nose things are sebaceous filaments, Paula’s choice bha 2% peel is meant to get rid of them.

polkadotpjs · 08/01/2021 21:48

Sebaceous filaments. That's the ones. Thanks. I had a look at the ordinary but it made my head hurt trying to choose. Is there an easy way to make a routine from their many items?

I’d just stick with a low strength retinol to start with. If you buy loads of things your skin can break out.

polkadotpjs · 09/01/2021 19:24

Any retinol advice that isn't £££. The ordinary stuff is out of stock.
And any Trinny London users??

I am mid fifties and swear by This Works In Transit primer. It makes my huge crater like pores disappear like magic.

Then I use EL Double Wear in Fresco (doesn't look remotely mask like on me) Maybelline blush powder in a pink colour, GOSH eye crayon in nougat, any old black eyeliner, and Maybelline mascara in the pink tube. Under eyes I use Tropic Illuma Light Diffusing concealer. I used to use Touche Eclat but I became allergic to it.

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/01/2021 19:37

I think Inkey do retinol.

browneyedgirl81 · 09/01/2021 20:05

I had the skin texture you are describing from my early 30's, i'm 39 now and i am finally comfortable with my skincare and makeup routine, but it was the skincare that led to my makeup looking so much better!.
The retinol treatment i am using also contains glycolic acid and 0.5% retinol it is Alpha H Beauty Sleep Power Peel used twice a week my nose has never looked so smooth!. It can sting a little and i use an spf 30 moisturiser every day but in 3 weeks it smoothed my nose filaments and my pigmentation has reduced so much!.

For primer and foundation my favourites now my skin has improved are: ( Not cheap but i love them i am not well off at all but there my feel good treats!)

Yves St Laurent Touche Eclat Blur Primer
Has a lovely glow and i am quite shiny but i am embracing the glow matte makes me look worse!, it really blurs any pores and nothing else comes close i have tried many cheaper primers.

For foundation i never thought i would be happy with a tinted moisturiser but i am finally there now! I was always a full coverage matte fiend!, but i recently bought Smashbox Halo Glow Tinted Moisturiser in shade light it does go lighter and it does give a nice light coverage and also blurs.
Just dust a bit of powder over the top to set and add the rest of my makeup and i am happy!.

Sorry for such a long essay but i no how fed up i was and it has taken a long time to feel happy with my skin and enjoy wearing makeup again! Hope this helps in any way!.

polkadotpjs · 12/01/2021 20:58

Oh yes thanks, will investigate these options. I'm bizarrely fascinated and horrified by my nose but the rest, it's just not right any more. There's hope though, reading this!

Agree re NAdine Baggott on Youtube, she is very good at explaining skincare and suggesting cheap items too. A good starter retinol is Indeed Labs Retinol Reface. Always on offer somewhere like Boots.
