Help me stay warm!

Classroom windows are open, I’m freezing inside! Today I worked in my hat, scarf and gloves! The kids are away from the windows but my desk is right under it.
I usually wear dresses and tights, today I had thermal tights and a thermal long sleeved top underneath and I was still freezing!
(I do run cold though, the kids weren’t complaining of being cold)
Please help me dress warmly while adhering to the smart dress code (which is a total curse)...
Size 12-14, tall, er, what other information do people usually provide? I guess size and shape aren’t particularly important, I just need to know how to keep warm!

Oh, in addition to the hat, scarf and gloves I did also have my coat on Grin

I have spent years working in very, very cold offices. I recommend two or even three sets of thermal underwear - long sleeve tops and long john style bottoms; polo neck sweater( cashmere is best) and trouser suit. If you can rise to a wool /80% wool suit that will make a big difference, Boots with a reasonably thick sole. Wearing long boots under trousers makes a big difference. I was amazed at the difference a pair of good over the knee leather boots made to how warm I felt. Hadn't realised how much difference warm knee made. It's so difficult getting smart warm women's clothing now. Men's suiting is so much warmer than women's . I also recommend microwave hotties and keeping your coat on.

TheChosenTwo · 06/01/2021 07:44

Okay, today i have PE but I’ll be doubling up on thermals underneath my kit. I’ll look like the Michelin man Grin
I think one of my dc have those microwaveable hotties but do they last long? And we have the ones that need boiling in hot water or something to reactivate them, I’ll look into something more practical but today I’ll put them in my pocket for when we go to PE. Thanks!

More layers. Tights or thermals under trousers, socks, boots. Vest, long sleeve merino or thermal top, shirt, jumper. Hat, scarf, gloves, coat. That's what is be wearing.
(And do you really have to adhere strictly to dress code in current circs?)

thedevilinablackdress · 06/01/2021 07:54

*what I'd be wearing...

CoronaCurls · 06/01/2021 07:58

Stick-on heat pads - 2 for a pound in Poundland. They activate when you take them out of the packet and they stick to your clothes - you couldput it betweenyourthermals. They last all day and are brilliant.

I'm always cold on my lower back so I put them there, but can stick them anywhere - they are great for period pains too.

TheChosenTwo · 06/01/2021 08:22

@thedevilinablackdress yes we do Confused we were allowed to be in casual clothing up until the end of July last year but from September the usual dress code expectations applied and they aren’t being relaxed this time round because “it doesn’t give the right impression”!
Thank you, yes I’ve layered to the extreme and currently chilly but not quite freezing (although I’ve only opened one window at the moment).
@CoronaCurls I’ll see if I can find those, I’ll be absolutely covered in them from head to toe if they work!

Thermals with a high neck. Real wool and cashmere. Layers. Real wool socks. Put a sheepskin rug on your chair. Have a hot water bottle with you to have on your lap when sat down.
You can also buy heated gilets !
I find the only thing that really warms me up when I get home is a hot bath.

MrDarcysMa · 06/01/2021 08:33

I have to have windows open in my office and the youngsters are complaining of being freezing, they all wear thin summer ankle socks and no jumpers Hmm

walkingwoods · 06/01/2021 08:40

Regatta have heated coats with chargeable battery packs. You can also buy chargeable hand warmers on Amazon.

Zenithbear · 06/01/2021 08:45

My dc is a teacher and was freezing, windows open and snowing outside - it's horrible.
Sheepskin rug to sit on is good idea. Ankle length long wool jumpers which hide several pairs of thermal leggings and some base layers underneath top half. Ankle length smart wool coat, snood under wool scarf and hat, fingerless gloves, ugg boots with wool socks.
I'd be tempted to take a wool rug or sleeping bag when sitting down.

Zenithbear · 06/01/2021 08:47

Wool blanket not rug!

Lurkingforawhile · 06/01/2021 08:51

Not massively environmentally friendly but I use the single use foot warming pads when I have to stand somewhere cold. Also m and s have a heatgen extra polo neck top in grey which is smart enough and very warm.

Babyiskickingmyribs · 06/01/2021 08:56

If you’re wearing tights and a skirt you can add knee height woolly socks over the tights - If they are the same colour as the tights or the skirt comes down over them it avoids the school uniform knee socks effect. When I was in Berlin for a week and it was -10 I found this quite warm. I would wear woollen tights, a base layer top or two, then a woollen jumper dress, over the knee high woollen socks, massive scarf, hat and skeepskin gloves then my coat and ankle boots with a decent sole thickness. I was toasty.

Friendsoneuptown · 06/01/2021 09:02

Can you buy a heated blanket and sit on that and sort of wrap it around your knees and legs when sitting.

Uggs would be a good idea to keep your feet warm.

I’ve read but don’t know how true - if you keep your wrists warm then your hands will be warmer so may be a pair of wrist warmers to sit over your thermal top type thing.

TheChosenTwo · 06/01/2021 15:39

Okay, today was better with the double layers of thermals underneath my pe kit.
I love the idea of a fluffy rug to go on my chair but at the moment all soft furnishings in the classroom are banned Sad I might be able to get away with it but I’m not certain... rugs, blankets, cushions etc have all been locked away for the time being.
I have a massive scarf which could double up as a sneaky blanket though.
And I’ll definitely go with the knee high woolly socks over tights and under boots, I’m just not sure how many more layers I can add before I start physically bursting out of my clothes Grin
Mind you, it will add interest to their day if I start turning into the Hulk!

I bought thermal trousers from Acai because I’m always cold, they are skinny and might fit the dress code with long boots? Bit pricey though.

TheChosenTwo · 08/01/2021 17:25

Thanks, I bought a couple of pairs of the thermal leggings last night from Acai to go under trousers and to wear with dressed and boots. Fingers crossed this will solve any further problems, I really do hate the cold! Just about to light the fire to thaw out a bit 🥶
