The Reality of Hair Dyeing

I've always been naturally blonde, it's a nice blonde so never felt the need to change.

Used a filter in a selfie today which accidentally made my hair very dark...my god, such a difference! It makes me look classier, somehow. I honestly think i look kind of clownish/'bubbly' with blonde hair and that people might take me more seriously at work? I think I might like to test the theory, but i know NOTHING about the reality of having dyed hair.

How quickly would blonde roots show if i went brunette? Is it really onerous to maintain? Confused

The root is one thing, the change on quality and texture of the hair is however the main issue.
I would say time wise, in 3-4 week you would see the roots, even if action will only be needed after 6-8

Are you saying it's pretty much a given it'll wreck my hair?

It shouldn't wreck your hair to go from blond to brunette, but it may wreck it a bit to go back to blond.

I would def wait until lockdown is over and go to a salon that specialises in colour.

If you are a natural blond, a lighter/mid brown is likely to suit you best. Please don't go all uber-dark a-la-Katie Price. Really dark (dyed) hair usually looks one dimensional and flat.

Going dark from naturally blonde, healthy hair should definitely not wreck your hair. You could try a semi-permanent dye first, just to see how you like it and they are gentler on your hair.

Thanks all!

Home colours will change the texture of hair. I am not saying to the extreme but the touch of hair that has never been dyed is different. Unless you do it in a salon.
I didn't say "wreck" , I used the word "change"

If you are going darker, try colour reposting masks. Maria Nila, Viral Celeb and Evo Fabulosa do incredible ones. Many others also. Google Colour depositing mask or conditioner

Try a water based dye. They're permanent and deposit only so no damage to your hair. I went from bleached blonde to brown and it looked very natural.

You could try Castings. I use it to dye my silver grey hair back to my original brown. It's semi - permanent and very gentle. I do it every 3weeks, only applying to roots now, and get very good results. My hair is in beautiful condition. It really doesn't harm it at all. It's bleaches and ammonia that damage your hair.

Housewife2010 · 12/01/2021 10:23

I second Castings. I've used it for about 30 years. I used to dye my hair darker when I was younger and now I use it to hide grey hairs. It's really straightforward to use. Remember to put vaseline around your hairline and ears first. I would try one of the lighter browns first and see how it looks.

Use a shampoo that colours your hair. Superdrug does one.

Castings or Nice&Easy semi-permanent are good though. If you go darker the colour lasts well.
