Average cost of maintaining blonde locks.

I have medium brown hair.
I would like this to be ash blonde and olaplexed during dying to try and avoid breakage.

I am in wales and outside major cities.

How much should I expect to pay for the initial 'dye job' and then how much/how often for maintenance??

I'm clueless, have never really spent money on my hair so don't know what I need to be budgeting for.

Thank you ThanksWine

I pay £125 (highlights full head, toner, olaplex, cut and styling), if you do full head colour it might be a bit cheaper although depends on the salon I guess. I do a refresher toner and styling every 6 weeks or so (£50) and full head again after 12 weeks.

I had a shoulder length bob, fairly thin hair (might charge more if you have a ton of very thick hair) and it was about £130 ish for a full head of foils, alternated with £100 ish for half head foils - every 6-7 weeks.
I had olaplex and a cut and blow too. I'm up north.

I have quite dark brown hair and used to be fully blonde. I needed it done about every 8 week at that point, at around £100. Mind you, this was when 'roots' were seen as a universally bad thing!

Now I get balayage. The ends of my hair are quite blonde but the top three inches or so are my own colour, it's blended really nicely so this looks deliberate and not like I just haven't had it done for ages. I can get away with getting this done every 6 months at a push and it still looks fine, this year I had it done in March and then not til November (lockdown) and it was totally ok. It costs about £80.

This is a good option if you are worried about budget and damage and can look more modern than a full head of highlights.

I used to pay a fortune for mine and hated the constant roots after a week or two, £125 a month until I discovered ballyage.
now I only go back minimum 6 weeks but I can go to 8 and she does the grey halo round my face with a much lighter blond so you can't see the roots there either.
i would consider ballyage unless you want to be constantly spraying the roots and sitting in the hairdresser. This isn't a photo of me but this is what my hair looks like.

It costs a lot. I stopped after a while - too much time, money, and chemicals. And then sometimes it isn't quite right, then it's faffing around trying to get it fixed.

PurplePansy05 · 02/01/2021 16:12

I definitely agree with pp, balayage would be great, alternatively a root smudge/melt. I sometimes get it done too, it works well. I'd avoid ombre, IMO it's gone out of fashion and I never actually thought it looked that great anyway.

mistermagpie · 02/01/2021 16:15

I should say, I don't have any grey hair, which is why I can leave it so long.

ohfordogsake · 02/01/2021 16:37

Thank you! I will definitely look into the balayage option- as yes I can see roots being a problem and expense!

Choice of Salon makes a big difference in price too, the fancy looking posh ones aren't always the best quality, either but often £££
Ask people you know for personal recommendations but - if you ask on Facebook etc I find people just recommend their mates rather than who is actually the best colourist. It can be a minefield!!

pumpkinpig · 02/01/2021 17:17

I pay £90ish for a full head and cut and £70ish for a half head and I go (or went) every 6-8 weeks and alternate between the two. About an extra £15 for olaplex. I used to hate the roots and tbh I probably need to go every 5 weeks if I want It to be perfect, but no one is under the impression I have perfectly natural multitonal blonde hair spouting from my scalp and I just don’t care anymore.

Central Scotland right bang in the middle of Glasgow and Edinburgh.

DD pays approx £200 for a full head of highlights. But she has long hair and a top stylist and goes to a large city salon (comparable with London prices)

Boomclaps · 03/01/2021 17:21

I go to the old lady hairdresser in my village for an alternate half head full head job + toner.
They’re fab.

50 for 1/2 abs 65 for full

I decided to go blonde from dyed dark brown last year, I began by having full head highlights (mobile hairdresser) £50 inc toner. I got my own olaplex. I have had 3 sessions so far.

My hair isn’t at my goal stage yet- I have a lot of hair, so some strands are still dark, there is that yellowy/orangey tone to it, if I use a purple shampoo - and I’ve been through LOADS it either ends up looking more orangey/yellow or slightly green or blue! So I can’t seem to win at the moment!

I have spent a lot on shampoos attempting to get the right tone, my hair’s condition has suffered (I’ve had quite a few trims) so I do wonder if it’s all been worth it! But I’m not about to reach for the brown dye yet. I think one more round of highlights & it should be as I want it. And another good cut! I know once I get the colour right, I won’t need to try out so many purple shampoos, at the moment they are trial & error.
