Women under 50 need not respond

AnotheChinHair · 02/01/2021 10:28

Sorry for such an ageist subject title, but I am often drawn to threads that ask for foundation, shampoo, etc. recommendations and then realise that the OP and respondents are in their 30s and feel like I need some discussion with women my age.

My hair has changed, my skin looks different, my body aches, my eyebrows are faint and full of greys... I was wondering if you're 50 or over, could you share your wisdom on how you've adapted your grooming?

I'd be particularly interested in hair products (my hair is fine, prone to frizz and def. thinning and receding), my skin is still combination I think, and I would like to find a long lasting oil free full/medium coverage foundation that doesn't look dry around my eyes (currently using ELDW), and also supplements that make you feel and look better.

I have a horrible carb face after the sugar excesses of Christmas, and I have stopped drinking alcohol as I clearly don't tolerate it anymore.

I should exercise more but my knee hurts.
Recently started hrt patches and that has helped with night sweats.

Hope others can share what's been helpful.

Im 60 and can relate to a lot of what you say.

For foundation I love Clarins Beauty detox fluid. It’s a BB cream but gives really good coverage and lasts all day and is more like foundation than a BB cream. All the BBS I’ve tried before I’ve found too greasy and don’t give enough coverage. The choice of shades is limited but because it’s the best I’ve found I still use it. It looks natural yet evens out areas of different colour. I’m on my fourth tube after they finally brought it back after some sort of supply/ingredient problem for over a year.

For hair I have started using olaplex 0 & 3. so far it’s still brittle and thinning but at least what I have looks shiny and in good condition. If possible get ferritin levels checked to make sure they are as near to 100 as possible and take vit D supplements. If you have started HRT patches you may well find your hair starts to improve. Mine has rapidly gone down hill in terms of falling and condition now I’ve stopped the patches after 7 years.).

The only proven thing for hair loss is Nioxin so I agree that products with that in are well worth using.

Probably not feasible at the moment but i got my brows microbladed and it’s been brilliant. It’s still looking ok after 15 months and has really changed my whole face somehow. I would really recommend Anastasia Beverley Hills Brow Wizz pencils to fill yours in with and give definition. It’s easy to use, lasts until you remove it and looks natural.

Exercise I’m useless with but really rate 30-60 mins walking. When I did that regularly I looked in the best shape I’ve been in for years.

@cathyandclare I use Wellguard gold standard pure collagen hydrolysate powder from Amazon. Its completely tasteless in coffee.

I am 52 and in throes of perimenopause so here is my list of what I have found useful-

  1. My hair is fine and thinning but due to covid and lack of haircuts my hair is now long which has really helped. I wash it every day, something I’ve never done, and it is shiny and looks better for being longer.
  2. I take Wellwoman multi vitamin supplements
  3. Yoga or Pilates for stretching and core strength
  4. Walk at a good pace for at least 30 minutes every day
  5. Eyebrow pencil for drawing on my rapidly vanishing eyebrows!
  6. Go to bed at about the same time every night
  7. Cut down on sugar, processed food and alcohol
  8. I use facial oil and moisturiser from a little company called Rock Rose Beauty which really helps to smooth my skin. Gorgeous products.
  9. I’ve also cut down on caffeine and switched to green tea instead which helps my sleep

Me too!
I am only 30.... 😱

Destinysdaughter · 02/01/2021 13:06

Yohoheaveho which cannabis vape do you use please? I'm having real trouble sleeping at the moment!

I've just turned 56 and I find the Eucerin moisturiser very good. I've had to dye my naturally dark brown hair blond as the grey roots don't show so much. My hair is also thinning, which has been the worse thing about menopause. I also second getting your thyroid checked, I only found out by chance I had hypothroidism when I got an over 50s health check.

Swaddlemeinplants you're trespassing!!! Grin

I’m 54, I’ve gone back to Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair as my skin was looking a bit blah. I’ve found for me less is more as I get older. For day I moisturise and wear an illuminating primer in place of any foundation, then mascara, maybe some eyeliner some days and a bold lip. I prefer my hair natural, again less is more so I shampoo & spray in some leave in conditioner or oil and that’s it. It works for me.

I take a vitamin D with calcium supplement every day. I am trying to lose weight as I know that will help with joint pain and other aches etc.

Yohoheaveho · 02/01/2021 13:22

@Destinysdaughter, I remember you from waaaay back👋😊
well done for keeping your name ...I have had more identities on here then I've had hot dinners🙈
(I use an enail style flower pot vaporizer and sometimes a vapcap btw)

IndieTara · 02/01/2021 13:25

With you OP I've had a hip replacement which has helped but the other one needs doing, arthritis. Compressed discs in my back and neck and pinched shoulder nerve. I really need to exercise but the aftermath is so very painful!
Skin and face wise, I finally had filler in 2020 and it's made such a difference.
Make up wise I use IT Cosmetics CC cream both the matte and illuminated one and their under eye concealer. They work so well. My eyes are quite hooded so I keep it simple and use eyelash curlers then IT Cosmetics Tightline mascara which is fab ( I don't work for them or anything but love their make up)
I also have my eyebrows tinted and went jaw length hair just before Xmas. I've been trying to grow out my hair colour and go natural salt and pepper but it's taking ages!

glas14368 · 02/01/2021 13:26

Watching with interest. Have no tips, but need to try to improve things.

I'm 52 with fine flat hair. It used to be quite short but due to lack to hairdressers has grown to shoulder length. It's certainly easier to just tie back, and I've started to wash in alternate days after washing every day for years. However, just noticed that I now have the same hairstyle as Kerry Mucklow in This Country - so there's thatSmile

I'm feeling that I look old now - and miserable with marionette lines dragging my face down. Seriously thinking of Botox/fillers, but concerned about number of people with weird looking faces. Would probably look better if I put on weight, but just can't bring myself to.

Going to try eyebrow dying tip - I have just been pulling out the grey hairs up until now. Did not occur to me that I could dye them. Grin

Destinysdaughter · 02/01/2021 13:30

I've been seriously thinking about BOTOX now too, but the frozen faces really out me off! Has anyone tried it?

Purplethrow · 02/01/2021 13:31

I have and it’s amazing . I have also had co2 resurfacing around my eyes .

Coffeepot72 · 02/01/2021 13:31

51 - Claris Double Serum, mascara and subtle eyeliner (so that I look alive), NARS tinted moisturiser, subtle and slightly glossy lip colour.

I look better now that I’ve grown my hair a bit - a pixie cut made me feel like I’d given up - and keeping my weight down helps. I swear by fresh air and exercise (there’s not much else to do in Tier 4) and I look dreadful without decent sleep.

Eviebeans · 02/01/2021 13:33

Hi I'm 58 - managed to lose 2 stones during 1st lockdown after noticing a collection of problems - achy joints, dry and itchy skin, thinning hair, poor sleep, flattish mood - a lot of those things improved significantly after changing diet and increasing walking.
Reduced carbs, cut out sugar, increased fruit and veg intake and drank more water. Starting taking a multivitamin. Have eaten some/lots of junk over Christmas and definitely notice the difference so will be back to watching what I eat in the new year. The improvement in the way I feel is definitely worth the effort

Jenasaurus · 02/01/2021 13:34

Watching this closely as I started a thread yesterday and got no replies, so wondered if I am the only person over 50 on here that wants beauty advice :)

Mine is 18!!

Madeupwithit · 02/01/2021 13:34

My hair thinned so much you could see my scalp shining through my dyed brown hair! I tried every shampoo advertised and it was a losing battle.

The only thing that has helped is I've stopped dyeing my hair. I was 95% grey anyway. So I'm 50, silver haired and my thinning is much less obvious.

I use a tinted moisturiser instead of foundation.

My knees hurt when I run so I do weighted hula hooping and use an Air Walker instead. The weighted hooping has knocked 2 inches off my waist!

I've had to change the colours I wear. Black is not my friend and neither is grey or white. Earth tones are good but not green.

The last thing I did was get my teeth fixed. My wonky top teeth had made me feel crap for years so I had a year with a fixed brace on and I had them whitened. I feel so much better with a whiter and brighter smile.

peaceanddove · 02/01/2021 13:35

Sadly, I had to stop my HRT last year, thanks to a BC diagnosis, and my face is now paying the price. So have just ordered the collagen powder and am booking some Botox as soon as I'm able.

Eviebeans · 02/01/2021 13:35

Also no alcohol. Use lots of moisturiser on my skin. Use light BB cream when I wear make up at all.

Hollybutnoivy · 02/01/2021 13:39

Yep, same here. I don't dye my hair yet though - which actually makes the contrast worse!

Jennygentle · 02/01/2021 13:42

Turned 50 in the summer.
Biotin for hair, skin and nails.
A really good multivitamin aimed at 50+ women.
Co-washing hair - mine is very fine and this makes it more substantial.
Hylauronic acid serums.
I’ve started using blusher for the first time ever ( usually just a dab of the lipstick I’m using). Makes quite a difference.

ImnotCarolineHirons · 02/01/2021 13:43

Great advice from @DameCelia
I've just put the chocs away and gone to drink two glasses of water Grin

Jennygentle · 02/01/2021 13:45

..oh and Boybrow on my blonde brows. Really gives your features some definition.

Coffeepot72 · 02/01/2021 13:51

And be very careful you don’t get long grey hairs sprouting out your chin - keep the tweezers handy 😜
