Real fur coat (vintage) help

Hi

I’ve inherited two real fur coats both kept in cool storage and in great condition. I think one is mink (full length) and the other is waist length.

I don’t think I’ll ever wear them and was wondering where I could potentially sell them other than EBay, not sure how much demand there is, they are beautiful and expensive but real fur doesn’t feel right even if it is 40 years old.....thank you for any advice

Bin them.

It’s the only ethical thing you can do with fur.

I do understand the argument that the animal has already died etc...the trouble is, by wearing, selling or otherwise being involved with fur, it normalises it, and this can never be seen to be a good thing.

Profiting from it by selling them on is just perpetuating the horrible suffering of animals.

Offer them to a theatre group? One day we'll be going to the theatre again....
I certainly wouldn't bin them tho...

Ridiculousradish · 01/01/2021 22:18

Bin them? Disrespectful and a total waste. Far better for someone to get use out of them.

SmartyPants0 · 01/01/2021 22:24

I wouldn't bin them, I like the idea of giving them to a theatrical group.
Out of interest I have been given a sheepskin jacket... what are your thoughts on them?

Toilenstripes · 01/01/2021 22:26

We binned two belonging to our aunt. No one wants or needs them. I even tried rescue centres but they couldn’t collect them as short staffed.

Spottybluepyjamas · 01/01/2021 22:29

Totally get that you might not want to wear them, but I would sell them if you don't want them rather than bin them.

I've bought real fur on eBay before - I would never buy new, only ever vintage - but I bought a fur shrug for my wedding and I loved it. A lot of people would want to buy vintage just for one off events, likewise theatre groups might benefit from them.

Plonque · 01/01/2021 22:31

I have seen a few on eBay, no idea what they went for cos it's not my thing but iirc they had starting prices of £100+
If you're on Instagram, there's a page called reloved again and she had a non branded fur coat on a few weeks ago, again no idea on price cos it went over my head but I definitely wouldn't be binning them.

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 01/01/2021 22:36

If it's an ethical concern now about selling and donating the proceeds to an animal charity?

I couldn't wear one personally but I'm not sure binning them is the only option.

AlwaysLatte · 01/01/2021 22:38

Obviously no one could wear them now but rather than bin them could you donate to a local animal shelter for warm bedding?

Squirrelsmum · 01/01/2021 22:56

Wildlife shelters will make use of them.

I don't think you will get £100 for them. Maybe £20 each. I love the idea of an animal shelter taking them.

NikeDeLaSwoosh · 02/01/2021 09:47

Agree, this is a good idea
SoupDragon · 02/01/2021 09:48

I would sell them and donate the money to an animal charity.

Thischarmlessgirl · 03/01/2021 10:06

Great advice thank you

I bought one from a local charity shop about 25 years ago. It was so cheap I assumed it was fake. When I got it home my DH checked it over and said it was real. I would never in a million years buy it new, but I have worn it and still do on occasion - everyone assumes it's a good fake. I'm a life long vegetarian btw, but I wear and sit on leather. Under normal circumstances I would only buy animal skin new if it was a byproduct.

justanotherneighinparadise · 03/01/2021 10:13

I wouldn’t bin it either. I agree it’s exceptionally disrespectful.

Deathraystare · 03/01/2021 19:33

Possibly someone in Europe (rest of Europe) would buy it? I am sure in Italy they still wear real fur and don't care. Sandinavia too possibly.
