Cheap makeup anyone?

I'm mainly a drug store buyer when it comes to make up. L'Oreal, Revolution, Maybelline etc, but a vegan range from Wilko caught my eye.
So cheap that you couldn't afford to throw it away if terrible!
So far I've tried face powder (very good), illuminating primer (I had a tiny, lumpy spot in the evening but couldn't say it was this) and a foundation (colours are limited and go from ghost pale and then to a quite yellowy tone).
I would say no noticeable difference between this and something like Rimmel or similar.
I would try some other bits if needed but just wondered if anyone else had any bargain buy recommendations?

Is It Essence?

savvy7 · 31/12/2020 10:23

Essence eyeliner pencils are great, as good as any I've tried in cheap and premium brands.

abstractzebra · 31/12/2020 10:29

No, they still do Essence but I think this range replaced Rimmel.
I like the look of some of the Essence bits but never tried any of it.
I also quite like a Technics mascara but you don't really see it in many places.

Essence princess mascara are great
Wet n wild highlighter (I use blossom glow)
Elf putty primer
Elf bite size palettes are excellent and £3!!

Dfg15 · 31/12/2020 11:41

W7 do some good stuff, their eyeshadow palettes are good, and they do a mascara in a fat yellow tube which is great. Some B&M stores sell it, and also Amazon. The mascara was £3.99, eyeshadow palettes are around £4 I think.

abstractzebra · 31/12/2020 12:32

I was looking at an Urban Decay eyeshadow palette in Debenhams before Christmas. So expensive but I loved it.
I then went into TK MAXX and they had a similar W7 palette for £3.99! I bought it but haven't tried it yet.
Obviously I know it probably won't be as good but for everyday, you don't always need good. You just need adequate.
I always start the new year trying to look good but also try and spend less, so I was pleased to find some items which are ok.

The w7 pallets are quite good imo
I follow Bryony Blake on something and she uses a lot of high street brands mixed with high end stuff which is handy to get an idea of what is good or not. I’ve bought primark lipsticks Which are lovely and smell nice
Maybeline too but I do like Bobbi brown etc but only buy if there is something I really love

Purplecatshopaholic · 31/12/2020 12:46

Just got a new Elf blusher as recommended by Gemma at Pampered Wolf (awesome YouTube makeup videos). It’s bloody gorgeous and was about 6 quid! Never tried the brand before but will defo try a few more things.

formerbabe · 31/12/2020 12:47

Primark mascaras are surprisingly good

MrsMomoa · 31/12/2020 12:50

I find W7 very chalky with not a lot of pigment, but Technic eyeshadow palettes are very good.
Technic highlighter pressed powders are good too.

Purplecatshopaholic · 31/12/2020 13:31

Another vote for Primark mascara - a friend recommended it, and it’s brilliant. About 3 quid I think!

Gogreengoblin · 31/12/2020 13:33

'Collection' is great especially their lasting perfection concealer.
Their eyeshadows are very pigmented and I buy them for presents

abstractzebra · 31/12/2020 15:02

There's a beauty outlet store a short train ride away from where I live which sells Technics. It's the only place I've seen it really.
I bought 3 face powder today from The Wilko range as I had to get a few cleaning bits and washing stuff. I thought I might as well stock up while they are 3 for 2. They are only £2 each anyway!
I will have a look at Elf. I've never really noticed it before.

I tend to go mid range, like No 7. But I have the odd thing, like mascara, which I got from the cheap Boots range. Think it's called natural collection? It's totally fine.

I used to get a lot of bare minerals make up and actually, I think I did notice the difference when I used that compared to cheaper versions. But it doesn't suit my ehem...more mature skin. So I'm actually better off with No 7.

JohnMcClane · 31/12/2020 15:24

I like W7 nail polish and their eye makeup is good too. I got a surprisingly good foundation from Primark too. I normally use maybelline fit me and this one is similar but more coverage.

abstractzebra · 31/12/2020 15:27

I am 50 but luckily have good skin and not too many wrinkles!
I use No7 serum which in some ways makes it easier to use cheaper makeup as it is a good base.
I've almost finished a Clinique blusher which I've had for ages but I really can't see the point of an expensive blusher. I've found most brands do the job!
I'm trying to use up a few that I have had for a long time and they are all fine whatever the price.

Unspeakably · 31/12/2020 15:31

Yes, the No 7 foundation I use is the one with protect and perfect serum in it op! I like it. My skin isn't wrinkly, but it is very temperamental! I have rosacea which has gotten worse with age unfortunately, so I can't wear what I used to. I also don't suit loose, matte powder anymore; I end up looking a bit...furry Xmas Blush.

MrsMoggy · 31/12/2020 15:42

Boots natural collection warm powder is my favourite and about £3.
Pretty much anything from Revolution I like, some really good make up brushes and sponges from there
Primark mascaras especially false lash queen
Collection lasting perfection foundation and concealer, goes on lovely

abstractzebra · 31/12/2020 16:43

@Unspeakably yes, I had issues with powder and eventually changed to a setting powder which is the white stuff. Also found a cheap one which I liked - Essence but this cheap powder from Wilko seems to be ok.
I tried the No7 serum foundation and it was fine but for the price, it just didn't wow me enough. However the protect and perfect serum on its own, I can genuinely see my skin looking younger and better.
I get the kids to buy it for me for Christmas and birthdays.
My usual foundation is L'Oreal, just the standard one but I have been using the one with supposedly more staying power due to wearing a mask at work. I don't think it made much difference and I'm not working again now, so all irrelevant!

My local Wilko has stopped the Max Factor and Loreal stands and replaced them with a Technics stand and one with Body Collection make up.

ZaraW · 01/01/2021 09:09

I really rate NYX liquid lipstick in Cannes just as good as more expensive brands.

BunTooti · 01/01/2021 10:52

I wore a lovely lipstick from Primark yesterday. A whole 90p! I really rate the Lustre ones.

BusterGonad · 01/01/2021 11:09

Obviously cheap make up is great when it does its job but I can't abide eyeshadow with zero pigment or eyeshadow that doesn't blend. I'm actually a huge fan of Japanese eyeshadow as its so soft, easy to blend and you can build up the colour. I also like the micro shimmer they use.
The Essence mascaras are great, so are the Catrice ones.

Coffeepot72 · 01/01/2021 13:56

I like L’Oréal eyeliners and max factor lip gloss.

QueenPawPaws · 01/01/2021 14:22

@BusterGonad is there any in particular you like? Brand wise I mean
The elf bite size are v good but I always like a new recommendation!
