I have Botox several weeks ago, after the injections my eyes were irritated and vision not great, this has developed into double vision. I’ve had to be referred to hospital for prysm glasses to help me. I have a tension and sore strained eyes. I’m scared to leave house my vision is so bad. Any advice what to do please ? Please be kind.

Hi, didn't want to read and run! Botox wears off in 4-6 months in my experience. Not ideal when you have double vision but it may settle way before then. Do the people you saw about your eyes know about the botox? I am wondering if anything else is going on. I've heard of eye droop but nothing to your extent

I had Botox for under eye a few years ago and had double vision side effect too, it was really distressing but wore off after 10-14 days. I hope all goes well with you

Thank you for replying, I had several tests done and my eye is squinting due to muscles in one eye. I’m hoping it does wear off, I’m just worried it may be permanent.

That’s reassuring that your double vision wore off. Thanks for your experience I hope I’m the same.

42abc so I have weakened eye muscles but only realised after the Botox. I found I walked about with one eye closed for a while as it made me less agitated & decided never again! I was the same and the opticians didn’t want to commit to it wearing off as they couldn’t guarantee it x

CrazyToast · 29/12/2020 22:57

That sounds bad, sorry OP. It will wear off as the botox does .

What area of your eye did you have done?

43abc · 29/12/2020 23:24

Yes they won’t say if it’ll wear off or not for me either so that’s a worry.
I had above the eye and crows feet area injected

Yes closing one eye helps me too

I had retinal surgery sixteen or so years ago, and I had double vision after the operation. It resolved itself after about ten days. It's actually your brain that needs to resolve the new data, not your eyes, if you see what I mean.

Not sure the two are comparable really, as the double vision comes from different causes.

It appears double vision is a known side effect of Botox. I found this from an American surgeon in response to someone with the same issue as you:

Unfortunately, the drug (Botox) may have leaked out into the muscles that move the eyeball itself. Fortunately, the effect of the double vision should be gone when the Botox wears off in 3 to 4 months. Make sure to return to the practitioner who performed your procedure for an examination and explanation. Then, consider a consult with an ophthalmologist about your diploplia ( Double Vision ) to rule out other causes/ etiology’s. Unfortunately, if the diploplia was caused by the Botox you may be best to wear a patch over one of your eyes until the effect of the drug resolves.

Thank you everyone for your advice and experiences, I really think this side effect should be explained, my practitioner never knew it was a side effect.

Botox was originally developed to paralyse eye muscles to help patients with squints. Unfortunately it can therefore also cause double vision if it affects the eye muscles in someone who doesn’t squint. I would be pretty certain (as an optician) the double vision will wear off eventually but it’s hard to say how quickly, so it’s a good idea to get your glasses with prism sorted as soon as possible and remember it to drive if you have double vision. The glasses may also need changing as the double vision wears off. Good luck.

Alocasia · 30/12/2020 22:41

That should say remember NOT to drive if you have double vision
