I have had a rough few years, and have been left with much thinner hair, slightly more at the hair line.

I'm now past a slightly early menopause, but still in a very intense/ stressful situation.

Can anyone give me their experience of anything that has or hasn't worked - Nioxin, biotin, other supplements...

I am making peace with the fact that I can't change the situation, so hope that my stress levels will start to go down, but I also think I'd feel better about myself if my hair was a bit thicker/ younger.

Hi! My hair is rubbish and has been getting thinner for the last decade or so. I've tried lots of supplements, including viviscal, biotin, supplements marketed as 'hair and nails', thickening powders, and lots of shampoos. Nothing has worked, and it just seems like it's luck of the genetic draw unfortunately! Having said that, other people may have had great success with lots of those fixes, just that I didn't. Instead, I have decided to have a hair topper fitted which is basically integrated extensions. It isn't a cheap option but gives great semi permanent coverage. I'm just waiting for (hopefully!) Covid to slow down enough to let the salons reopen. I'm thrifty in other areas to justify the maintenance and cost of finally having nice hair!

MsMeNz · 29/12/2020 01:30

Ok I can only talk disguise not route cause fixes.... For me I use a dark power I apply with brush on hairline and parting to hide scalp somewhat. Takes about 3-4 mins

Get a flattering cut I went to a long Bob with a side fridge and good highlights that add depth. I shared my concerns with hairdresser.

Finally I have a couple of easy clip in hair extensions that I add in for volume only on special occasions rakes 3-4 mins max to apply but I don't wear around house

A mixture of biotin, iron, b-complex, b-12, cod liver oil, magnesium, zinc are helping my hair to grow in better and look healthy (ish).

I have an auto-immune disease and lost loads of hair before diagnosis. Never had thick hair, plus, alopecia runs in our family.

If I look back a year I can see quite a big difference in my hair. It looked on old pics like I had male pattern baldness, not now.

I try not to abuse my hair with heat too often and i swear by loreal mythic oil..applied to wet hair when fresh out of shower and before brushing with a tangle teaser brush.

My hair is not thick, but it never has been. I seen someone quite recently who I'd not seen for a couple of years and she kept commenting on my 'thick' hair.

Alternatively, my relative tried minoxidil (not sure of spelling), this made a marked difference to his premature hair loss (comes at a cost too). But, made his hair darker. Equally, mine is growing in curly and frizzy but I'd rather that than none.

blisstwins · 29/12/2020 02:06
  1. Men’s minoxidil (5%) even if a women. More peach fuzz in face, but shave it off
  2. Toppik (like the hair powder a op mentioned)
  3. Highlights

  • Google iodine for hair loss and thinning..
-Also folate ( not same as folic acid) is meant to help with hair fall. - Stress wise:
  • a good vitamin B Complex ( Lambert's 50 is good imo), and,
  • essential oils are so potent and helpful if you find the right one/s for you. Patchouli, lavender, vetiver, clary sage, rose, chamomile are all good in my experience but it's personal. Best to get a pure therapeutic grade one if possible.
  • I find Faith In Nature shampoos gentle and quite like Noughty shampoos too. -Stay away from shampoos with SLS.. it started life as an industrial degreaser.

-Rinsing with a bit of raw apple cider vinegar in water ( about a half inch of the vinegar in a litre bottle) seems to keep hair and scalp cleaner for longer too.

-Rosemary essential oil is meant to.have performed as effective as Minoxidil in tests. Be sure to dilute it in a carrier oil of course. An easy way to get that rosemary goodness is to put some rosemary leaves in apple cider vinegar; let it infuse for a week or more then decant the vinegar into a bottle for a hair rinse (a half an inch of vinegar in a litre of filtered,as in shower filter...not Evian, lol,) , water approximately

  • Also, a shower filter is a good investment ( about £25) My hair was like straw no matter what conditioners I used. As soon as I started using a shower filter the change was huge. I hardly need to use conditioners at all now..just a tiny bit of leave-in( or oil) to smooth the ends. The shower filter has saved me spending cash on conditioners that weren't able to do their job anyway as our water was so hard.

Good luck

I can sympathise with anyone with hair loss
For the last 2 years my hair has been getting thinner and now almost bald patches
Tried everything as poster above, now using minoxidil, for 5 months, no change as yet, thinking of giving up
Someone I have recently chatted with used very high Vit D,and said her hair is almost as it was before,
I am interested in the clip in extensions though, can they be bought online or in a high street shop?

TreacleHart · 29/12/2020 12:14

I've recently been participating in a blind research for hair loss products. Was given 3 months of tablets .
I found out at the end which ones they were , Nioxin . I didn't have any change to my hair at all in those months , not even the general condition.

Vitaminsss · 29/12/2020 12:16

It all depends on you and what type of hair loss you have.

I am in my early 20s. I started to lose my hair due to stress (telogen effluvium) this year. I know this is temporary and that my hair will regrow as I’m young/healthy, but that isn’t the case for all hair loss. It seems like your problem may be chronic or genetic if it has lasted years? Female pattern hair loss is common.

Minoxidil is the only thing that will work. It is the only treatment that has been studied and researched with proven efficacy - everything else on the market is purely anecdotal. Unfortunately minoxidil is very expensive and a bit of a faff, you have to commit to use it daily, for life.

TreacleHart · 29/12/2020 12:16

I think you have to ignore my post ! I'm sure the tablets were Nioxin , but it doesn't look like they do tablets !

Vitaminsss · 29/12/2020 12:18

Kindly, you should consider counselling to deal with your extended period of stress. It’s not good to be intensely stressed for extended periods of time, you hair won’t really recover until you deal with it as your body is essentially stuck in fight or flight mode.

Vitaminsss · 29/12/2020 12:20

Also supplements will only help if you’re deficient in said nutrients to begin with.

Shampoos and other hair products will make your hair seem thicker/denser but won’t actually address the thinness long term.

Extensions are a good shout.

I lost the front of my hair due to epilepsy meds in 2011. It has very frustratingly taken until this year for the front of my hair to grow back & look more normal again (it's always been fine).

I discovered I was a bit anaemic last year & the gp wavered on giving out iron tablets but basically if your HB is lower than 120 & your ferritin levels are low it can affect hair growth so I asked for & got iron tablets to take until my HB was above 120 on bloods.

Then in the spring this year I went to Holland & Barrett and bought 'Gentle Iron' 20mg capsules. I take 1 a day plus ensure I eat beef twice a week. That way I can make sure I don't get anaemic again.

I also now take 2 Perfectil Hair supplements a day.

And have bleach highlights which make my hair coarser.

I have noticed lots of baby hairs along my hairline & my hair has grown more this year than in the previous 8 years.
I'm really pleased!!

It could just be coincidence but I'll continue taking the supplements.

GreyHare · 29/12/2020 13:08

I found Hair Jelly Protein Capsules helped but only noticed a difference halfway through the second pot and using a caffeine Shampoo, I like Plantuar 39 but I might just start using the tonic instead.

DameCelia · 29/12/2020 13:13

Minoxydil, my hair has started growing back noticeably in the fifth month.

princessTiasmum · 29/12/2020 13:25

I saw a dermatolist who said i had chronic Telogen Effluvium, which is why he thought it would have grown back by now
Mine is probably stress related
I shouldn't be low on iron as I have Haemochromatosis which is iron overload, buy my iron isn't particularly high.and I don't eat much meat so maybe it's the wrong kind of iron,
I have bought some liquid iron also a gentle type so trying that too
I applied for that loss of hair survey, but wasn't accepted, but they tried to sell me treatment
I have tried Nioxin shampoo ,also plantur 39, which didn't work, also viviscalvery expensive, also didn't work
Nizoral is supposed to be good, but lost all faith now in these ads

Would you mind sharing the shower filter you went for please? I've been looking on Amazon but there are loads! Thank you Smile

I've suffered severe hair thinning and list of general health and shine in my hair since pregnant six years ago. However in the last two years being full time Carer to a SEND child , stress of school provision , politics and general pure worry that comes with this has meant chunks are literally falling out daily, to the point where I no longer wear my hair down anymore as I'm so depressed by it now.
I've started taking a biotin supplement lately which definitely helps (I'm so run down and have minimal sleep most nights but eat well) . I've seen an improvement so will persevere with these!

Weirdfan · 29/12/2020 13:42

No idea if this will work for anyone else but always feel I should mention it in case it's more than a fluke. I'm in peri and my hair has been falling out for a while, handfuls when I've combed through conditioner, loads on hairbrush etc. Ended up using DD's Child's Farm strawberry and mint shampoo because I'd run out of mine and noticed a massive improvement within a couple of days. Have been using it for a couple of years probably now, don't particularly like the smell or feel of it tbh but have tried switching back to my old shampoo a couple of times and I go straight back to losing handfuls again. As I said, no idea if it will work for anyone else, please let me know if anyone does try it and it works though! Smile

lborgia · 29/12/2020 22:19

I'm bowled over by all the comments, thank you so much. I do see a psychologist every couple of weeks, more or less, which does help enormously, but agree that I might find all the faffing with my hair might be pointless whilst dealing with current life issues.

I'll make a proper list of all your suggestions, and work my way through them.

Quite emotional actually, a little kindness goes a long wayBearBear

Yes, a very high strength vitamin d3 is what is helping mine to grow back in, as well as a silica capsule too. @princessTiasmum.

I take quite a few vitamins now.

princessTiasmum · 29/12/2020 22:55

Aunthilda i will up my vit D3, what strength are you taking please?

CatsBooksAndCoffee · 31/12/2020 01:36

I have no personal connection but suggest following Trua Hair on Instagram. Lots of advice and personal stories and their shop at truahair.ie/shop-front/

zeddybrek · 31/12/2020 02:11

Alpecin - you have to leave it in for at least 2 mins and takes about a month before you see any difference.

Sea kelp supplements.

udnertheradar · 31/12/2020 09:31

I also have chronic telogen effluvium. Lost a lot of hair due to stress in the first lockdown. The trichologist recommended a supplement called Florisene
