Smaller/ethical/British/other lesser known brands thread

Through various threads on here I’ve been introduced to some amazing brands.

So I thought it would be good to start a thread to let each other know about our best lesser known brands - I’m thinking for those of us trying to buy less and focus on good quality items, as well as a environmental friendly products (so this might be sustainable, recycled and/or vegan brands for example) and avoid support those companies that have poor working conditions (Boohoo I’m looking at you....) I’d love to know more small producers which focus on single products, hand made items, or niche British heritage brands (or heritage brands from anywhere else!)

So here are a few finds of my own:

The Knotty Ones: knitwear (obviously!) made by women in Lithuania, fair conditions, focus on quality over quantity. Expensive but I love the organic cotton jumper I have from them and will wear it for years and years. www.theknottyones.com/

Genevieve Sweeney: small knitwear company based in the UK. Amazing sparkly socks, great little gifts. www.genevievesweeney.com/

Bhava: US brand but with some UK stockists, non-leather shoes and boots, amazing quality, beautiful designs. bhavastudio.com/

Angela Roi: non-leather bags, simple classic designs. US brand but shocked at Naturismo and Shop Treen in the UK. www.angelaroi.com/

Wills Vegan Shoes: as the name suggests, non-leather shoes and boots, really good quality. Environmentally friendly practices and produced in fair conditions in Europe. wills-vegan-shoes.com/

Mackintosh: British brand, hand made coats (inventors of the Macintosh), very expensive but would last a lifetime, and can pick up coats with a good discount in the sales. www.mackintosh.com/gb/woman

Hiut: denim, made in Wales, gorgeous jeans! hiutdenim.co.uk/

Girlfriend collective: activewear, made from recycled materials. www.girlfriend.com/

ImparfaitParis: vintage/second hand site, bit like eBay. Some gorgeous stuff. www.imparfaiteparis.com/en/ see also Depop and Vestaire.

I think those are my best finds. Please share some of yours Grin

I really want a loungewear set from here www.thewalkerandwalker.co.uk/lounge-wear-copy

Sunshiney1981 · 28/12/2020 22:33

Asquith London for ethically made yoga, Pilates and loungewear.
Eco fabrics and all made in a factory in Turkey where the workers are all paid fairly and treated well.
I’ve a pair of their yoga pants and they are absolutely gorgeous. No chavvy logos, just super soft simple lovely fabrics.
Nice harems too.

Great thread, thanks OP Smile

Thought clothing (used to be Braintree Hemp). I've got stuff from them that's been going years. I don't recommend the undies though (although the socks are ace) https://www.wearethought.com

Conchus - terrible name, but great soap and toiletries. After trying many shampoo bars, I've settled on theirs. Plastic free, too conchus.myshopify.com

I did an order from Re-fashion recently and everything was great. It's second hand clothing, but you can easily return (unlike eBay etc) and they've clearly vetted things carefully.

Keep thinking of more Grin

I've not bought from them but Lanx shoes (UK made, in God's home county of Lancashire no less Wink) - look lovely and well made. https://lanxshoes.com

I have bought from Po-zu shoes - they may be totally vegan now, glancing at them. I've got a lovely comfy pair of trainers and some snazzy ballet flats made from pineapple skins Shock po-zu.com

I don't think anyone has mentioned Bam bamboo clothing yet. Great for active/loungewear, and my latest purchase was a bamboo/merino jumper which is very cosy

The crofthouse sells knitwear made in Scotland as does Bosie. With Bosie you need to be aware that prices shown don't include the VAT - it is added at checkout. I guess they sell a lot to trade or maybe to tourists who can (currently) reclaim the vat. Both Bosie & Crofthouse have glorious colours.

BikeRunSki · 29/12/2020 07:43

I agree with @Sadik about Finisterre. I have three pairs of their trousers, which fit beautifully are are really well made. I wear them over and over.

Earth Kind Originals (some products made in India, some in Blackburn) earthkindoriginals.co.uk/organic-womenswear-our-story/EKO
Friendly Soap lots of lovely ethical and vegan soap, shampoo and conditioner bars and laundry powder from Hebden Bridge
Nancy Dee Nancy Dee sustainable, upcycled fashion from London

A bio different - Bio D ethical, vegan, UK made cleaning products

Great thread! I have nothing to add but following with interest.

MrsDeadlock · 29/12/2020 07:50

Thanks for the thread OP. I really liked the Knotty Ones when you suggested on the other thread. I can actually knit quite well so it inspired me to pick up the knitting needles. If anyone is interested in British wool for knitting, I highly recommend West Yorkshire Spinners www.wyspinners.com/

Their sock wool, patterns and chunky wool are fab. I usually struggle with real wool but can tolerate theirs well.

Ginfordinner · 29/12/2020 07:55

DD is a big Lucy and Yak fan. Their trousers are cut for women with defined waists and hips and fit her beautifully.

BikeRunSki · 29/12/2020 08:04

Mostly men’s trousers and boots, but unisex accessories HebTroCo

BikeRunSki · 29/12/2020 08:08

They are better known for kid’s clothes, but Kite are based in Dorset, ethical - although manufacturered in India - and do some women’s wear.

BikeRunSki · 29/12/2020 08:22

Don’t know if this counts, because it’s leather shoes, and looking at their website, they are bigger than I thought. But Moshulu don’t claim any particular ethical standards - maybe they don’t exist for leather ? - but appear to be quite “thoughtful”. They are an independent company from Devon. DM has a pair of their shoes that she has worn a lot over the last 5 years and they are still going strong - longevity is sustainability.

GertrudeKerfuffle · 29/12/2020 08:57

I'm loving this thread!

Below is a blog I really like about sustainability - it covers all kinds of topics - zero waste, fashion, cleaning, beauty - i like it because it isn't full of 'look at me' photos and the writer seems really down to earth. I've tried some of her recipes for diy cleaning products and they've worked a treat.
