Help! I'm so fed up with my rubbish skin!
The picture actually minimises the spot / inflammation issue I have on my cheek / bridge of nose.
I'm 47 and this flares up every few days or so. I was told a few years back by a dermatologist that I had rosacea but creams, etc haven't helped.
Could this be a reaction to too much sugary crap? I've not noticed any patterns in general.
I drink lots of water but I can't say my diet has been that healthy recently for obvious reasons.
I've ordered some perfectil vitamins to see if they might help over a longer term, but I'm sick of covering this up with thick foundation which I'm sure doesn't help either!
Do any of you lovely mumsnetters have any advice for me?

Skin issues are quite common due to peri-menopause. Do you have any other symptoms/issues you're dealing with? HRT may help.

42isthemeaning · 26/12/2020 20:11

This has been going on for a few years now, but I wonder if it could be related to that. To be honest I'm not sure I've experienced any other symptoms. My current ongoing issue is a frozen shoulder! I have the mirena and as a result don't have any period anyway, but ovulation etc is still happening as far as I can tell.

Sometimes it is linked to diet. Sugar, wheat or dairy are usual culprits.
You could try cutting them out for a couple of weeks and see if it makes a difference.
My skin is affected by dairy and nuts so I avoid them now (except cheese these last few days and I can feel my skin flaring up)

Aquamarine1029 · 26/12/2020 20:15

My peri started at 41. Some women have loads of symptoms, some have none. Typical ones are anxiety/increased anxiety, insomnia/sleep issues, joint aches, hot flushes, night sweats, digestive issues, headaches, mood fluctuations.

Weather change, diet, stress and indoor heating I find has a big impact. Try and cut down dairy and junk food, drink loads of water. Try a vitamin c serum during the day under your moisturiser. Plus anything anti inflammatory might help.

You have type 2 rosacea - soolantra will sort you out. Get an online prescription and be prepared for it to get worse before it works. Mine was worse than yours but soolantra finally cleared it. Nothing else worked for me.

bowtieandheels · 26/12/2020 23:19

I second Solantra, took around 3 months to work but don't give up as it does the job eventually. Mine cleared up entirely and I no longer need to use the cream!

42isthemeaning · 26/12/2020 23:25

@DameDoom I was wondering how you can tell? It is only limited to this one part of my face - is that normal with type 2 rosacea?
Thanks everyone for your posts. Diet does seem to play a part then. @Aquamarine1029 that's a very interesting article - thank you for posting it.

It does look like Rosacea. If the prescribed cream doesn't work your GP will usually prescribe oral antibiotics- which are usually very effective. Have you been back to your GP?

Onebrokentoe · 27/12/2020 00:46

It looks just like my rosacea. I use Soolantra daily, and have a daily antibiotic. Good luck OP

Bingowin · 27/12/2020 00:57

Have a look at Dermatica,it's an online dermatology service (you send in pictures).

I have different issues to you but the results have been brilliant.

Have a search on here for a few reviews.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 27/12/2020 00:59

I just had to see a dermatologist about something else and asked him if it was normal to still have an egg suzed/shaped area of my cheek if pale skin from having something removed a few years ago.

He said no, but it's not pale skin, it's your normal colour, it's your rosacea making it look pale. I said I had no idea I had rosacea & I asked him how to get rid of it & he said see my GP for a three month course of antibiotics. I always feel really ill on antibiotics so decided to live with the rosacea as it's not noticeable, I just go red very easily when I get hot.

Do you think the Soolantra cream would help with that? (I don't get 'bad skin'.)

DameDoom · 27/12/2020 11:40

@42isthemeaning - yours is very similar to how mine was. I started with a tiny red mark on my nose and it gradually spread all over both cheeks. I tried everything but it always flared back up until soolantra. There are lots of threads on here if you do a search - it’s miraculous stuff.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/12/2020 12:07

Looks like me when I had cystic acne triggered by the contraceptive implant.

I took roaccutane in the end.

42isthemeaning · 27/12/2020 12:28

@Bingowin thank you, that website looks really good. I will go there after I've tried the cream if I need more help.

In response to a pp, I haven't been to see my GP for a long time about this issue. When I did go, he prescribed an ointment which the dermatologist told me was terrible; she wrote to the GP to ask him to prescribe the metronidazole. I was also given something with retinol in it but then I had to avoid sunlight which was going to be tricky before a holiday abroad.

I did also wonder if the mirena coil might be responsible, but that has been so good for me in other ways I'd like to keep it!

I will definitely try the soolantra and report back.

Thank you to everyone for your thoughts / advice. I was just getting so fed up with this as it makes me look pretty hellish and it's embarrassing, plus very tricky to conceal. I thought I'd got rid of spots after my teen years - no such luck!
