Help to glam up for a charity ball!

Skribble · 24/10/2007 14:26

I have been invited to a charity ball and as my recently exed H might be there and because I want to ditch my frumpyness I want to go glam.

I have two possible dresses one is black from M&S as recommended by Gok, I have never had a chance to wear this out yet. I think it would need some clever accesorising to make it more suitable for a ball.

I also have a red chiffony type dress, log with a sort of ruffle down the front, I think it makes me look a bit too mature and doesn't do as much for my waist as the black one, but again glammed up it might be better. Kind of like this but less flary at the bottom and as I said a ruffle down the front.

What about those pattered tights, do they just acentuate chunky calves?

They are a bit like the shape of the ones I have but not the peep toe. Perhaps brooch on shoes too or too much???

yes, they are for the skinny of legs only (I am not in that group )

Shoes for wider feet and matching bags?

Skribble · 24/10/2007 15:16

Think I will have to stick witht he shoes I have got, never wore themout yet and I need watch if I am buying accesires too.

Oh I like the first ones on that link, anywhere in real life do those kinds with the wider fit, I would need to try on.

See I am so easily swayed.

I might get this watch- I have one from my GGM which is almost identical - and original! but doesn't work any more.

Skribble · 24/10/2007 15:24

Nice. I don't thnk I will splash out on a watch myself, but must remember to take of my ancient teenage boys style watch.

I picked up a body shop book about make up today for 50p in the charity shop and has big close ups of smokey eyes so I might have a trial run.

Argh just found out it as a James bond theme so the vespa make up and hair is spot on but the black dress I have is def not glam enough.

I don't think the red one is glam enough either, but a bit closer. I tried on some fab dresses in TKMaxx and some fab ones but all too big or too small and I don't know if I can justify spending £40+ on a dress I will wear once.

There is a bigger TKMaxx nearby so I might try there on MOnday as I would love something totaly glam and fab, perhaps I can make the money back selling it on Rbay.

Pondering on your James Bond Theme Ball dilemma....
I've been to a few in my time (said she the sage of the charity ball ha), and you can go in one of two directions.

You can either try and emulate a specific bond girl (or their particular style)
or you can do black tie formal (ie long or at least evening).

The former will get you more attention , the latter is easier (but I think from the 2 dresses you have linked to, you will probably need to get a more formal eveningy dress).

I love fancy dress, and the bond theme gives you plenty of scope to use your black dress.

Here's a link to the bond girls. I particularly love Xenia Onatopp, you could probably pull off her look with the right hair do, make up and accessories (v patent!). Killer heels will help too.

Depends on how daring you feel

Skribble · 27/10/2007 22:25

I feel very daring, but need help holding up boobs so have to be able to wear a bra or have support in the dress, can't do killer heels

I don't think I will go for a specific bond girl just glam.

Could go for the white bikini look .

Where can I get clip on hair things (cheap)so I can do an up do, I would only have a very short stubby ponytail. Claires???

Skribble · 27/10/2007 22:29

love this look

Update, I have bought a big long clip on pny tail for £5. It looks great down but I think I might try it up for a more sofisticated look.

The clour is a good match. So I am trying to figure out how to do a sexy up do with a fake clip on pny tail

What do you think of my attempts?

OP posts:
GreatBigHairyMonsterlapin · 30/10/2007 00:32

Ooh you have gorgeous hair . I love that updo!

Oh, I just reread the thread and see it's a fakey! Looks great though.

For James Bond, how about trying your local Fancy Dress shop - they will sell long black gloves and those cigarette holder things - those plus a long frock are enough to make it "Bond", I reckon.

Skribble · 30/10/2007 00:35

£5 for internacionale and you too can have gorgeous hair . Thanks BTW, I am really pleased with the colour match

I tried on the long red chiffon number I have and it looks quite glam.

SO the question is what accessories?

Black or diamonte?? Sparkly bits for hair?

OP posts:
GreatBigHairyMonsterlapin · 30/10/2007 08:47

Diamonte for a Bond evening, definitely. Bling it out, girlfriend!

Skribble · 30/10/2007 15:04

Ok I will bling witht he diamonds, saw nice little ones that you twist into your hair. I will have more metal on my head than R2D2

OP posts:
GreatBigHairyMonsterlapin · 30/10/2007 15:14

Beep beep

I used to have those twisty things... you might want to secure them with a hair grip too.

Skribble · 30/10/2007 20:58

Oh thanks for the tip, they are like spirals with a gem in the middle, saw spring type ones but don't know how they work.

OP posts:
littlelaPainAndTorture · 31/10/2007 20:32

Yes, that's the fellows. They untwisted very quickly! so twist them in then secure with a grip.

Are you all sorted now?
