Make up sets

firsttimedad79 · 18/12/2020 15:08

Ok, so our 2.5yo DS decided to "use" mummy's make up and has basically buggered the lot up!

What would be a good set to get DP?

I know nothing about make up, but would like to get her a nice full set as it's been a couple of months now and I've had an unexpected work bonus (bought a shark hoover and for some reason she's over the moon!)

Would need to be purchase online as I leave for work at 5am Sunday and don't get back until Christmas Eve at some point.

Thanks :)

Do you mean like an eyeshadow palette? Is that what your toddler has smashed up?

Bobbi brown and Charlotte tilbury have lovely palettes. They sometimes include a blusher.

It's hard to buy a whole make up "set" - even if they exist I'm sure she wouldn't want one. Most people buy foundation, concealer, brow stuff, mascara, eye shadow, eye liner, blusher, bronzer, highlighter, lipstick etc from different brands depending what suits them.

TankGirl97 · 18/12/2020 16:26

Do you know what brands she likes? There are a lot and some people are devoted once they find one they like.
I'd probably give her a voucher and maybe book her in for a consultation with them for the new year?
Alternatively, Urban Decay do 'Naked' eyeshadow palettes which I know are popular (personally not tried them). I like MAC myself, you might find it useful to chat online to one of their makeup consultants and they can recommend a package of basics to make a start with.

Bk21 · 18/12/2020 16:26

Revolution do fantastic eyeshadow palettes and they're not too pricey. Maybe buy her one of those, with a blusher pallette and some lipsticks. Charlotte Tilbury, Huda beauty are also good.

firsttimedad79 · 18/12/2020 16:35

All she had was an old pencil case that had an eye liner, mascara and a few other bits. It was never really a proper set :(

I bought her a cheap mascara once (I'm a bloke and don't understand these things) and she was over the moon.

She was in a very very horrible marriage for 15+ years before meeting me and was only allowed very cheap or basic stuff. I've not been able to afford much to make it better but now I've got this bonus I'd like to get her some nice stuff, hence a set. She hasn't as yet got any preferred brands, it was just what cheapest :(

Look up Boots Wizard of Oz range.
No idea why they are doing the range, but it's gorgeous! There is a set for £35 in a gorgeous bag. I bet she'd like that. Happy shopping!

TinselToedElf · 18/12/2020 16:40

I'd go to Boots and get some No7 makeup, it's not expensive but very good for the price. They often have a 3for2 offer on so you could get a few bits. I usually find the consultant that works on that counter quite knowledgeable and helpful.

Or if you want to splash out a bit more then go to counter like Dior or Clarins and ask their advice, just nip to either Boots, JL or Debenhams.

HotSince63 · 18/12/2020 16:42

It's hard to buy make-up for other people and get it right.

Why not buy her an appointment to have her make-up done at one of the counters and some money towards purchases, and then she can choose her own stuff.

You usually get back the cost of the appointment in products aswell.

Salcara · 18/12/2020 17:20

Ahhhh you sound lovely and thoughtful @firsttimedad79! I second @HotSince63 suggestion of booking her somewhere to have a consultation together with a voucher Boots is nice and accessible, and not too intimidating If she gets a morning or afternoon to herself to enjoy the experience plus a lunch or afternoon tea, she’ll be delighted

Unfortunately the whole "experience" side is out as she doesn't have anyone to share it with :(

I might just book her an appointment or get a voucher for the few hours in the morning when DS is at nursery!

Not all of the makeup houses are allowed to do makeup at the moment hence me not suggesting it.

Well I think a lovely set from boots No7 would be a lovely thing for her to open on Christmas morning.
The colours are usually quite neutral and wide range of skin tones.

You've got me browsing gift sets now! The No7 Wizard of Oz sets look fab, as a pp suggested. Something like this also covers all the basics....

www.boots.com/christmas/gifts-for-her/all-christmas-gifts-for-her/becca-light-up-the-party-kit-10287839 this is good and pretty universal i think, her skin tone and eye colour will determine what colours look good on her

Oh no! I'm hoping this doesn't become expensive for others now!

I've settled on the wizard of oz kit as it just shouts out to me :)

Btw, is your username in reference to the old comics?

I've started looking at boots gift sets too 😂🤦🏼‍♀️

TankGirl97 · 18/12/2020 21:40

@firsttimedad79 yes in reference to the comics! And in '97 I had the hairdo too! Actually it may be better not to take any style and beauty advice from me 🤣

Howzaboutye · 19/12/2020 01:04

That's a gorgeous makeup set! Lucky lady
Have a lovely Christmas

dontgobaconmyheart · 19/12/2020 04:10

It sounds like she doesn't wear much makeup OP and that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with her past so much as the heavy makeup look isn't for her. I would get neutral wearable things. If someone gifted me a palette, or that particular palette I wouldn't really get any use out of and don't think No.7 is particularly premium cosmetics wise. Eyeshadow isn't an every day thing for me at all but I do wear makeup daily.

It's a lovely thought. I would get her a voucher for the likes of Boots, Feel Unique or Look Fantastic. A decent amount of it's affordable and then she can enjoy the pleasure of choosing new bits.

It's a shame the film wasn't as good as the comics! (I was a spotty teen in 1997 so loved that stuff and manga lol)

But I digress, I've got the wizard of oz thing and going to give her a voucher. Have to be careful on the voucher as if it's a general one she will spend it on everyone else and not herself.

QVC have a rather lovely IT cosmetics set called Beauty Book Volume 4. They say it works for all skin tones.
Also on offer.

Grimble69 · 19/12/2020 14:06

She'd need some brushes with that set.

AliceinBunniland · 19/12/2020 14:33

The Benefit set and No7 set are good ideas

I think it's nice to actually buy a gift and wrap it more so than a voucher for something that's difficult at the moment
