Shall I go from blonde to red? Impossible question of the day...

I'm bored of blonde. I liked it when my hair was very long, and also very short, but now it's sort of chin length (I'm growing it) it's just dull. It's also too blonde as I'm been doing it myself (too skint to go to the hairdressers all the time ).

So I'm thinking about going to the hairdressers and changing to red. I'm naturally a redhead anyway, so I'm not too concerned about skintone etc (pale, freckly, grey eyes). Plus as the roots come in, they won't be so obvious so I could afford to get it done professionally as it will be less often.

Current hair colour to something like this - whaddya reckon?

What I REALLY want is to look like this

i kinda liked it and kept it that way for a long time. i eventually dyed it dark till i got it all the one colour and then gradually got the blonde highlights into it again

littleNonSpecificHolidaylapin · 23/10/2007 11:39

Oh Effie, that's EXACTLY what I want to look like!

No, I will definitely go to the hairdressers. I was scared enough dyeing it blonde myself in the first place!

OK, thank you MN Jury, I shall go and make an appointment!

oh and i had had green hair at one stage(accidently) , so pink wasnt that much of a shock

boolepew · 23/10/2007 11:41

The only trouble with blonde to red is is the red won't 'take' very well, every time I've done it it fades really quickly and I have been known to leave red all over towels, pillows etc. The worst was one time just after doing it ran down my face in the rain. I looked like I'd been attacked by a cleaver. Good luck anyway, maybe you'll look like Bree Van Der Camp to my Cilla

ClaphamLauren · 23/10/2007 11:41

I went from blonde to red a few years ago and even now I have a red tinge to my now dark brown hair when my current colour starts to fade.

Red can be so difficult to get out, make sure you are 100% sure!! The colour you like is really pretty though.

why dont u try a semi permanent auburn?

bigspender30 · 23/10/2007 12:08

heres a question for you.Do you have any grey hairs yet? I am a natural redhead and I started getting grey hairs ( well white hairs actually as redheads tend to go white rather than grey) so I was finding that I needed to go to the hairdressers more often to get them covered up. My hairdresser said as you get older, you should always go lighter so I now have blonde highlights. Point I am trying to make is that if you are blonde just now, you may not notice if you have any grey hairs but they will be more predominant if you go darker.

littleNonSpecificHolidaylapin · 23/10/2007 12:11

Noooooo grey hairs It did get very root-y IYKWIM for a while - I had about an inch and a half of regrowth (slutty I know but it grows very fast) and there wasn't a grey to be seen, yippee!

Dh compensates for me, he went grey at 22!

If you are red naturally then I think it's a good idea to return to this shade. But, the red pigment is the smallest of all the hair dyes (black is the largest) and so the red on top of your existing blonde will fade much quicker, and you may be left with a red hue to your blonde. Some hairdressers may suggest they put the colour onto your hair twice, and this is better, but do expect some fading (and so expect your natural red roots not to be exactly the same colour as your lengths after lots of washes - least til your blonde is gone)

Either way, the red will really give a quick refresh to your whole look (and you'll have to buy new makeup of course, and clothes, so lots of fun to be had there too!)

littleNonSpecificHolidaylapin · 23/10/2007 15:01

They are going to put some sort of mousse on it first (described as a "base coat" to "stop it going khaki" ) before the colour.

Unfortunately they can't fit me in for 3 weeks, at least not when I can get a baby sitter. Oh well. I'm going to call another salon, if I wait 3 weeks I'll never do it. Or I suppose I could get it done in Hong Kong!

I am naturally mouse, was blonde for about 10 years and have been red for about six years now. One word of warning - think about your clothes. I wore a lot of red when I was blonde, had to retire all those clothes when I changed my hair colour to red. I still often make a beeline for a really nice red dress in a shop and then realise I cannot wear it any more.

littleNonSpecificHolidaylapin · 23/10/2007 18:46

Hmmm. I do like red clothes.

Fab DH has just told me that he's got Friday off and they've managed to squeeze me in, so I'm getting it done then! Woo hoo!

take the plunge!!!! Go red!

indiasmum · 24/10/2007 13:03

i went from blonde to dark brunette last week. lots of people say they prefer it. some have avoided eye contact. i feel as though i am wearing a wig. and its so high maintenabnce- more make up, washing, straighteneing and all that faff. its gonna have to go!

however...... i think the colour you want is lovely. go for it! will prob look in great condition too. but as others have said dyed red fades really quickly even with the 'pre-pig' you are having (which i also had to have)

you must send us a pic when you've done it btw!

littleNonSpecificHolidaylapin · 24/10/2007 13:54

PMSL at people avoiding eye contact!

The hairdresser stuck a wig on me, and I nearly fled immediately - it was a shocker! She almost PHSL and said "it isn't a great cut... or colour for that matter" and whipped it off PDQ

I am completely grey

Well, I would be if I wasn't a redhead IYSWIM.

littleNonSpecificHolidaylapin · 24/10/2007 14:03

Still no greys here

DH is completely grey (various shades of) and has been since he was 22. It really suits him, he also has quite a mediterranean skin tone, plus I think it makes him look younger - young face with grey hair. A bit Pip Schofield

Be careful. My sister took to doing this a few years back and it made her eyes look pinky looking, as if she had permanent hayfever. It also put about 15 years on her. She now looks back in amazement and wonders what she was thinking.
