Sam and Nic Chapman ditching social media - any thoughts?

Sam and Nic Chapman (make up artist sisters behind Pixiwoo and Real Techniques brushes) have both put a similar post on their Instagram pages, saying they are coming off social media as they've had a good think and decided it's not for them anymore. They will keep their IG accounts but not add any new content. All sounds a bit bizarre since they are regular posters and do a lot of their work on social media, IG especially. Anyone have any thoughts about what's behind it?

I saw this earlier, I follow both. The statements were both very similar and they both had pictures of them 2 together. It’s seemingly out of the blue isn’t it? They both seem to be doing so well with the collaborations with Mac and things and I imagine it’s how they make their money so it’s odd for them to both just stop suddenly

Lottapianos · 17/12/2020 17:26

V similar wording in both statements. V weird situation. Much more to it I'm guessing

I stopped following them a while ago because I missed them actually doing their make up. They used to have a joint account and then I realised I was only following one.

QueenPaws · 17/12/2020 17:43

Definitely a bit odd. I spoke to one of them and only clicked because I was "why do I recognise this voice?!" then realised I watch too many makeup tutorials GrinBlush
She was lovely

Delatron · 17/12/2020 18:02

It’s strange as it must be a source of income for them.

Yoshinori · 17/12/2020 18:10

Very odd. I suspect interest in them will reduce

MooMinCow · 17/12/2020 18:15

Yes I saw that this morning and thought Hmm also.

I know they’re all managed by the same social media management company so wonder if that’s the issue (think they manage their siblings and other ‘YouTubers’), and they’re leaving?

tofuschnitzel · 17/12/2020 18:27

I wonder what they will end up doing as their careers rely so much on having a presence on social media.

Titsinknicks · 17/12/2020 18:32

Hmmm...

MabelMoo23 · 17/12/2020 19:00

I was really confused by the practically identical post for each of them

Shitonthebloodything · 17/12/2020 19:37

Good for them.
I think we'd all be healthier for it tbh.

DelphineWalsh · 17/12/2020 19:42

Feels a bit flouncey. Why say your leaving if you're going to keep it open for some personal posts?

Shitonthebloodything · 17/12/2020 19:43

Can't edit my post but I don't think they'll struggle for work. Lots of the most successful session MUAs/nail techs/stylists/BTS people have no social media presence anyway.

Delatron · 17/12/2020 19:45

It’s quite an easy way to generate money though isn’t it? It’s much easier to take a photo, pop a little makeup tutorial up, do an ad promotion in about 2 minutes from home?

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 17/12/2020 19:49

I found it pretty genuine. That they don’t like how ad led social media make up artistry has become, that they’ve got older, re-evaluated and want to make some changes. They were never really ‘behind’ Real Techniques - they were approached to be the faces to help it launch in the UK. The relationship is served both parties well and I can’t imagine Sam or Nic are hard up.

Fair play to them. They don’t want to just take the money - they want to believe in what they do ans right now, being ‘gramers isn’t for them.

TheBaroucheBox · 17/12/2020 21:51

I read their statements earlier and my first thought was that they have earnt enough money now and can afford not to do it anymore and fair play to them, they've been doing it for years. They were part of Gleam which meant they did have quite rigid uploading schedule, constantly having to plug lots of different brands etc which also played a part in saying that enough is enough. I really enjoyed their content and will miss it. I think they will still carry on with Real Techniques though....

But they have been a part of the "ad lead social media" up until this point, and they have profited from it the same as other influencers.
YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 17/12/2020 22:17

@tofuschnitzel sure but it’s changed dramatically even in the past 3 or so years - much more ‘sold’ content than there was when they started out. Maybe they’ve changed too.

I don’t do the same job as I did when I started working. It’s in the same field but I’ve adjusted my career over the years as I’ve grown older and changed. Perhaps it’s as simple as that for Sam and Nic.

Titsinknicks · 17/12/2020 23:27

They're very rich and can be choosier is basically it isn't it. I imagine a bigger gulf growing between low grade influencers and those that don't need to rely on Instagram for much less money
