Sore, burning skin around eyes since starting Dermatica

I signed up for Dermatica a few months ago and it's doing marvellous things for my sun damage but my skin, especially around the eyes, is sore like I've never known before.
Putting any kind of moisturiser on causes a very unpleasant burning sensation (with red patches) that wears off on the rest of my face but stays around the eye area.
I'm not using the treatment every day, probably only every few days but it seems to be getting worse regardless.

I'm using an Aldi day and night cream, an Inkey collagen booster and at the moment I'm putting the Neals Yard Rose Balm around my eyes, as it seems to help a little.
Any hints, tips or sympathy?

Many thanks

It doesn't sound as though it actually suits your skin to me....

JoanDarc · 16/12/2020 19:09

When you say around the eyes, how close? I don't got right up to my eye area; I tend to avoid the area directly underneath (so where dark circles would form) and certainly not on my eyelids.

How often are you using it? I started every second day and built up to daily but sometimes would miss a day if dryness is forming. Sometimes your regular moisturiser can nip if skin is raw, if so I would layer on some aquaphor (it's a miracle in a tube) to help repair your skin.

I don’t go near my eyes with it. How close are you getting?

If you’re steering well clear of your eye area I’d stop using it and email them.

I have some of the worst sun damage over one eye, around the eyebrow, so that's as close as it gets.

I'm going to sound like an eejit when I say that it hadn't occured to me that it didn't suit my skin, I just assumed the pain and burning were part and parcel of attempting to look truly magnificent.

I'm using it 2-3 times a week, it's definitely getting worse, wasn't too bad to start with.
Perhaps I'll try the Aquaphor before I throw in the towel.

Thanks for taking the time

Is it tretinoin you're using? If so what strength?

Now weathers gone cold I had to go back to a lower strength and sandwich between LOTS of moisturiser

BigBirdsbird · 16/12/2020 21:22

I'm using 0.05% Tret
4% niacinamide
4% azelaic acid
I'm happy to try the double moisture sandwich.

I'm panicking slightly that I've done something irreparable to my skin as it's never been particularly sensitive before but now a strong gust of wind has me wincing and reaching for the Baileys.

Figroll, can I ask what strength you're using?

I would suggest La Roche posay cicaplast m.feelunique.com/p/La-Roche-Posay-Cicaplast-Baume-B5-Multi-Purpose-Soothing-Repairing-Balm-100ml to help heal and soothe the skin around your eyes. You should keep the tret well away from your eyes, it’s obviously causing a lot of sensitivity. Aldi day and night cream will both be highly fragranced so I’d avoid those to be honest. The rest of your skincare should be very gentle and unfragranced.

I had a similar thing. Eventually the GP prescribed some steroid cream which cleared it up. Now I only use Aveena moisturiser

Figroll16 · 16/12/2020 21:48

I'm now using 0.025 strength -they'd put me up to 0.05 which was fine in summer but as soon as weather changed my skin got drier and more sensitive (it always does this time of year)

A layer of the LRP cicaplast helps too!

funtimefrank · 16/12/2020 21:56

I had this too op. I cut back use and everything else in my routine except a Superdrug hydrating serum in the morning and cerave moisturiser in the pm. I put the dermatica over the moisturiser.

Its helped although still a bit sensitive. Redness has faded and I'm starting to see some improvement 3 months in.

JoanDarc · 16/12/2020 22:14

I'm also on the 0.05 with Dermatica. Some other things I would try are to put moisturiser/ straight on top of the prescription instead of waiting (under normal circumstances would leave it 10 - 30 mins) before moisturising. I also find sealing my moisturiser with another layer like a facial oil works well, maybe even the aquaphor. Maybe give the prescription a break for a couple of weeks and get skin back on track and try some of the tips to see if it helps.

You need tret ‘goggles’.

I know exactly what you’re talking about and it will wear off if you just do a bit more buffering around the eyes.

But only use very basic products, nothing with perfume

Thank you so much for replying, lots of great advice here
