What are your opinions of this dress and where would you wear it?

Personally I don't like. it, but that's irrelevant isn't it? You'd be the one wearing it, so if YOU like it...

I guess it depends how affordable it is for you. If it's your entire clothes budget for 2021, then it's probably not a good idea, but if you can afford to buy it and have it sit in your wardrobe until you get invited to a suitable event then buy it!

You'd look very over dressed wearing it just to a restaurant or something & I don't feel you have the self confidence to pull it off - you care too much what others think. ( I couldn't either).

If you want to wear it for Christmas Dinner at home, then do that. (Balance how much you care if it gets ruined)

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 15/12/2020 18:58

I say go for it.

SmileyClare · 15/12/2020 18:58

Posh events;

weddings, christening? Any black tie event, Christmas do? Collecting an Oscar (as mentioned) or CBE,. Dinner with Benedict Cumberbatch, Dinner on a cruise ship or wear it at Christmas this year if you want to? Why not dress the table to match Xmas Smile

Suzie11111 · 15/12/2020 18:59

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants yes that makes sense! Thanks defo not to a restaurant.

Does anyone know if it will be suitable for an Indian wedding? I used to get lots of invites to weddings as family friends are Indians. It’s sequin so I might be able to wear? (When restrictions end)

Coming from a family that dresses reasonably nicely and would dress more formally for occasions like weddings (men and women), I'd happy wear this dress at a party, for Christmas day, dinner at home etc.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 15/12/2020 19:00

Posh Events it would be suitable for...

A VERY formal dinner
Wedding (but the colour isn't very cheerful)
Dinner with Kate & Wills.

Being completely honest. If I was you and had the figure to carry that off (I do not. I'm too fat and I'm barely 5ft and no longer wear heels!!) Id buy something I'd get much more wear out of.

Suzie11111 · 15/12/2020 19:00

Thank you everyone some fantastic suggestions. @SmileyClare lol! x

My family is Indian and you'd be fine wearing this to weddings but always better to double check with bride and groom and not all Indian families are the same. In my experience other guests are likely to wear more heavily embroidered and colourful Indian dresses (sari's, chaniya choli etc) so you wouldn't look too posh or formal. The dress you've linked is fairly dark though so a brighter colour may be better, I'd wear this colour to a reception after the wedding at a push. If you are close with your friends they may well even lend you outfits, especially sari's as only the blouse sleeves need adjusting, or recommend you places to buy dresses from.

OP what sort of style do you like? Are you looking for something nice to wear to a family Christmas dinner that will cheer you up, but not be too formal? I'd go for something like this. It's dressy, but not as formal as the one you've posted www.joebrowns.co.uk/christmas-crinkle-wrap-dress-wd922#colour=208

efes · 15/12/2020 19:13
@efes that’s interesting! So would you say I could wear if I went on holiday in the evening?

I’m so rubbish at these things. I’m going to feel self conscious no matter where I wear it lol
Absolutely yes if it was a formal evening on a cruise ship. I don't cruise myself but DSis worked on them for a while and had an impressive array of dresses like yours when she had to dress formally.

Suzie11111 · 15/12/2020 19:15

Thanks @MilerVino I’ll check it out now

I would be too worried about my foot going through the hem.

MoltonSilver · 16/12/2020 08:45

Realistically it's only suitable for a ball or maybe a very dressy wedding or even for a bridesmaid. Its not a holiday dress or an out to dinner dress. If you tend to feel self conscious, wearing it in the wrong setting will make you feel doubly so.

ZaZathecat · 16/12/2020 10:08

The opera or the symphony daaahling!
Seriously though, wear it for your Christmas at home if you want if your having a dressy day 🙂

elQuintoConyo · 16/12/2020 10:16

Christmas Day, definitely. This year I'm thinking of wearing my wedding dress: original 1950s prom dress a la Grease Xmas Grin

CrotchBurn · 16/12/2020 10:34

I'd say this is too fussy and embellished for any occasion I can think of

itsoffical · 17/12/2020 09:57

It looks polyester so I wouldn't advise wearing it in warm or humid weather.

I would wear it as a bridesmaid or to a evening wedding/formal birthday party (dinner & dancing type thing)

helloxhristmas · 17/12/2020 10:00

Why do you want it op? Is it just something you like?

I would wear it to a black tie do, for me pre covid that would be boring work awards dinners etc.

I wouldn't wear it for Christmas day but if you want to why the hell not!

IShouldBeSoLurky · 17/12/2020 14:16

You also wouldn’t be able to wear a bra with it, if that matters. Personally I don’t like it at all but it’s the sort of thing people wear to formal businessy events: awards ceremonies, fundraising dinners etc.
