New glasses frames

How often do you replace them? What triggers you to replace them?
I’ve had my first ever pair for two years now and there is nothing wrong with them but wondering if I fancy a change if I need a new prescription when I get my eyes tested.

I wear my glasses all day every day so I do tend to replace after 2 years as they get knackered! I like to be 'vaguely' on trend with frames as I think it's an easy way to update your look Smile

Not so easy choosing frames at the minute! I struggled when I bought some earlier this year - it's hard to tell it they look ok when trying with face mask on!!

goose1964 · 14/12/2020 19:33

I get new ones about every couple of years. The paint had come off the bridge on my last one.

Santosi · 14/12/2020 20:12

every 2-2.5 years. I never wear lenses and only get one pair so after 2 years the frame gets knackered and the coating seems to wear off too. The lenses just are less clear I find and need cleaning non stop.

IloveJudgeJudy · 14/12/2020 20:32

Every two years here. I figure if I'm wearing something every single day then I need them to look good. I buy from Specsavers, usually BOGOF. I get glasses and sunglasses one time and two pairs of normal glasses the next.

Sweetpea1989 · 14/12/2020 20:37

I’m contemplating getting some more but always feel so indecisive, I cba with the pondering. Any recommendations for trendy frames?

Zinnia · 15/12/2020 11:42

I need new ones as my current pair getting knackered (used to wear 3-4 days/ week but every day since I stopped being arsed with contacts lockdown.

I usually go to Bailey Nelson as I find their selection good and they're one of the glasses-for-£100ish places (unless you need varifocals). Current pair are from there and I've had them for almost exactly 5 years!

MsRinky · 15/12/2020 11:49

I tend to knacker my frames after a couple of years because I also wear contact lenses and do a lot of taking on and off and wearing them on top of my head. I just got two lovely new pairs from boobloom - they send you five frames to try on and return for free.

Procrastatron · 15/12/2020 16:16

I have an appt with my local independent optician and their frames are stunning/quirky and nothing like the high street. I know that if I need a new prescription I’ll be tempted, particularly if I need to wear them for more than reading/work. I feel like I’m trying to justify the inevitable spend even though my current frames are perfectly nice.

Glasses Direct for me, five free pairs at a time and very reasonably priced, so I can have two pairs on go.

M0rT · 15/12/2020 16:20

It's always good to have spare glasses Wink
I keep a pair in the sitting room and a pair in the car. When you don't have to wear them all the time is when you need extras so your not constantly looking for them!

YummyBelicious · 15/12/2020 16:21

I have about 6 different pairs, all different styles. I like to alternate the look 🙂

PontiacBandit · 15/12/2020 16:24

I have a cash plan with work that gives £200 annually on glasses so I try to use that every year, I now have loads of frames and sunglasses. I've already decided my next pair will be rimless mirrored transitions.

SoDiorDarling · 15/12/2020 16:33

If you like designer frames, have a look at shade station online. I wanted a Chanel pair and nowhere near me stocks Chanel. So I had my eyes tested with vision express and then uploaded my prescription to shade station. Also ended up very reasonable.

Nothing really to do with OP but after 6 years with the same frames I'm so happy I found this website and will def order another pair.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 15/12/2020 16:37

Every 2 years here too, I wear mine all the time so they do get a bit grotty. Plus I like to update them for something different at that point too. Have gone for a lovely cat eye/round shape this time instead of my usual rectangular style and I really suit them. I went to mad about specs online, chose a pair I liked and uploaded my script plus with being a student I got 50% off!

TheQueef · 15/12/2020 16:37

I just bought new ones.
The eye test itself was difficult with mask/covid rules but also you couldn't browse frames, they asked me to choose on website and I could try on six pairs. Then they go to be decon.
This was Asda.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 15/12/2020 16:52

@TheQueef that’s a pain. I use vision express and was able to try on frames to see what suited. My daughter has just had new glasses from there and instead of me going to collect them and them being fitted to my DD face properly, they now send them to your address and it’s pot luck whether they fit or not so I had to take her back in to get them fitted anyway! Not sure what that achieved but it’s only since covid this new system has started

GrimDamnFanjo · 16/12/2020 01:06

I have 3 pairs plus 3 prescription sunnies.
I buy from seen.co.uk who are in Manchester.
They stock independent eyewear brands and they are amazing. As long as I can afford it I'll buy a pair a year.
I need a very strong prescription and my lenses are the thinnest on the market so I am no longer restricted to particular frames sizes.
Check out designers like Anne et Valentin and Theo.

NottinghamFlorest · 16/12/2020 03:54

Always Ace and Tate for me. Really cool and stylish and really affordable too.

IamEarthymama · 16/12/2020 07:35

OP I am so glad you started this thread as I have just had my eyes tested and need new glasses for function while the puppy chewed one pair so I also need new ones for style *

I usually go to SpecSavers but the problem is that without my glasses I can't see how I look in the new frames
My wife usually comes with me but Covid restrictions and new puppy mean that's impossible
I took a selfie in order to virtually try on frames and looked like death warmed up (haven't been well, in lots of pain) which put me right off.
The assistant in SpecSavers was lovely, very friendly but they have to keep each pair you touch to disinfect so he followed me around, was concerned when I looked at men's frames so I abandoned ship and said I would go back.

I would love to try online; as I wear varifocal, can they get the graduations the right place?

Your experiences and advice would be very welcome

Op Should I start my own thread!?
Sorry for hijack!

dudsville · 16/12/2020 18:33

I should have replaced mine 2 years ago when my prescription altered, but I loved the frame so I sat on it. Then last year I swore I'd do it this year after my holiday at the end of March. Then the pandemic hit. My vision is quite poor now and the frames are knackered. I do normally try to stretch my glasses to every 4 years but that's a push and the frames get tatty.

pinfloy · 16/12/2020 22:24

About every 2 years. I absolutely hate choosing frames though, I'm fact last time I didn't bother choosing at all and just got exactly the same ones again.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 17/12/2020 13:53

@IamEarthymama I know mad about specs let’s you choose 4 pairs to try on at home

Procrastatron · 19/12/2020 09:30

Thanks all, it’s good to know it’s not outrageous to want a new pair after a couple of years. My current pair are Gucci and I found the woman in vision express brilliant for helping me chose them. @IamEarthymama she actually persuaded me to look at men’s and women’s frames equally and in the end I chose from the mens range. I don’t like fiddly flowery glitzy embellishments but I also don’t want to blend into the crowd.
My issue with vision express however is that they were unhelpful with the lenses and my specific needs. My local independent opticians has since helped me with this and now I know that they have an amazing (bold) range of frames. There is also something about supporting the local business if I can afford to as well.
Appointment later today so maybe I’ll report back...

Every 2 years. I buy expensive frames and want my money's worth! I go to an independent opthalmist and they have some fabulous frames. Excellent service too.
Due for new ones in January.

Procrastatron · 20/12/2020 08:19

So I did need a new prescription and I did get new frames. They are from a small range and white statement and I love them. And now we have had the announcement I am even happier that I have something that’ll make me smile each day.
