Style maximalists with control over their wardrobes!

Looking to sort my eclectic wardrobe - love colour and pattern and, while I sometimes fancy paring it all back, I just can’t seem to make it happen/can’t bear to get rid of my brightly coloured vintage dresses!

Would love to hear from style maximalists who still manage a beautifully arranged wardrobe. Thanks!

I’m hoping others come along with brilliant ideas, as I have the same issue. I’ve sold a lot on eBay, especially things that looked gorgeous but in reality I had no opportunity to wear. That said, I buy a lot too Blush. Somehow I keep up a steady churn, and just about make space, but it would be so much easier to be a minimalist. Your clothes sound lovely, by the way.

Thanks, @Craftycorvid - and hi! 👋🏼 Glad to hear it’s not just me! Help us, wise S&B posters! 😂

I've sold a lot of things om ebay. I don't know why, but by the time I have photographed them and put the listing up, it doesn't feel like mine any more.

You have had the pleasure of owning them, but if you aren't wearing them, or going to, you might as well get rid.

I have regretted selling some things but there is a limit to what I can wear.

Honestly, unless there’s a reason that you have to get rude of stuff (no space, or need to make some money via eBay etc) then I’m not sure I would!

I had a good wardrobe clear out last year and whilst I have pared down my work wardrobe and day to day stuff, I still have quite a lot of fun outfits like vintage dresses I just fell in love with and things I’ve bought for certain events (I love fancy dress so go to things like Goodwood Revival most years) and kept most of that. Just boxed it away so it’s not taking up space in my wardrobe and getting in the way (wardrobe was previously so full I could never find anything!) Those things I really love and might wear again if the right event comes up, or even pass on to a daughter or niece to ply around with in the future.

*play!

Have a separate wardrobe for your joy-sparking vintage dresses and another for your pared down capsule.

I keep the stuff I don't want to get rid of, because I will wear it once in a blue moon, in a separate wardrobe. It means that if there is a party or event, I won't be desperately searching for something I know I look good in, good coat etc.

You don't have to have it all out.

I'm not a huge maximalist but I do wear entirely different clothing depending on the season.

Most of what I wear during the winter can be safely stored away from April to October. And very little of what I wear in summertime has any useful application in winter.

In my wardrobe are the clothes that I expect to wear for the next three months and nothing else.

Once a month I do a quick "what am I missing? Why aren't I wearing that? What have I got coming up? What's the weather likely to do this month? check up and make adjustments.

It's a rolling capsule. Everything is still accessible, but not in my way in the main wardrobe.

What do you wear day to day? If the answer is not "brightly coloured vintage dresses" then they shouldn't be in your main wardrobe. Smile

These responses are so helpful, thank you!

I think it’s a really good idea to move the things that I’m not wearing from day to day into another space. Lockdown (and having small children!), I think, has affected what I’m wearing - I still adore the vintage dresses but I’m not wearing them as I used to. I think I’ll wear them again, so moving them into another space seems perfect!

I’ll have to be storage boxes (as opposed to a wardrobe) at the moment, so any advice on packing and preserving would be grand!

Thanks again - so helpful. 😊

Packing them in boxes is fine.Keep them dust free.
if they are special, wrap them in acid free tissue. If they are woollen or silk, keep them in airtight containers.
If you have special shoes to go with them, put those away too.

Thanks, @MikeUniformMike!
