How is this possible?! Hair conditioner

So a few weeks ago, I realised I’d run out of conditioner whilst in the middle of shampooing my hair. That was the first time I can remember not using conditioner when washing my hair. I have long, thick, dry, knotty hair so have always considered conditioner to be essential and have spent tons of money on it over the years.

Amazingly, after brushing my hair with a wet brush and just using morrocanoil (usual post conditioner routine) my hair was soft, silky and pin straight. I was gobsmacked! But I convinced myself that it was fluke and bought some more conditioner.

The same thing has just happened again...I forgot to buy more conditioner so I’ve just washed my hair without it. My hair looks the best it has ever looked! How?! Is conditioner actually a scam that just dries your hair out to make you buy more? Anyone else not use conditioner and has hair out of a pantene advert?

shampoo strips out the natural oils and conditioner then replicates them

I went through a few weeks without conditioner when I ran out and kept forgetting t get more

My hair had a lot more body

I went back to using conditioner and it’s definitely worse but yet I keep conditioning it

This reminds me to stop using it!

Nonamesavail · 11/12/2020 23:09

I only do it once a week now.

It must depend on your hair, I’ve got very curly hair (and dry) if l don’t use conditioner I look like I’ve been plugged in to the national grid & had a terrible fright all at the same time 😂

I stopped using it a few years ago, I have very fine, straight hair and it's in great condition now. I find I only need to wash it every 5-6 days now with a natural type shampoo (Faith in Nature brand), as opposed to every other day when I used a normal shampoo and conditioner.

ScalpHelp · 11/12/2020 23:21

I guess it’s similar to the effect that clarifying shampoo has. You’re probably using a conditioner too heavy for your hair type

FatGirlShrinking · 11/12/2020 23:34

I use kids 2 in 1 shampoo, L'Oréal kids is my favourite, ever since I started using it a few years ago my hair's in better condition, it needs washing less often and it looks much better.

As a PP said, the conditioner replaces your hair's natural oils that have been stripped off by the shampoo. The Moroccan oil does the same thing. Conditioner also has other active ingredients that coat the hair or are absorbed eg to prevent tangling or thicken hair. If you get better results with the oil, stick with that.

I'm beginning to wonder if I don't actually have "thick" hair. Hairdressers always say I do, but I think I have quite fine hair, just a huge amount of it? So the individual hairs themselves are thin but tightly packed all over my head. Does that sound possible?
It would explain why my conditioner for thick, coarse hair seems to be making my hair look worse...

Lots of conditioners have silicone in that coat the hair and weigh it down. I stopped using silicone a while ago and my hair is much easier to deal with

upsidedownwavylegs · 12/12/2020 11:43

Yes if you’ve got that fine straight hair type but loads of it you probably don’t need conditioner every time, or the type that you were using. I physically couldn’t get a brush through my hair without having used a lot of conditioner. I’m jealous of you!

MikeUniformMike · 12/12/2020 12:20

I'm not convinced that conditioner does much. My hair seems less tangled when I use it, but that's about it. I've tried different ones.

If someone has scientific proof that it does something worth doing, could you post a link, please?

I was always told I have really thick hair until a hair dresser once told me my hair is quite fine there’s just absolutely loads of it. So I switched to a conditioner for fine hair and it made a world of difference.

No scientific proof but if I posted a picture of my hair without using it you would run screaming in horror 😂

That means you need to post with and without photos, nancy75. Smile
