Have you been to John Frieda, Charles Worthington, Vidal Sasson, or Trevor Sorbie Salons?

Were you happy with your cut? Would you go back?
I really want someone who can give me a cut that is not cutting edge, but suits me, my hair type and my lifestyle (eg no time!). They are meant to be good salons, but I am worried that I will come out looking like a topshop model...on a 37yr old post 2 children body.
My dh says I need to 'suck it and see' but I am a little nervous of doing this when I will be parting with £50 and upwards.
Advice appreciated.
TIA

I've been to Vidal Sassoon several times - this was over 15 years ago though. I was happy with the cut.

Why don't you try an independent salon linked to Aveda? Aveda is very particular about standards.

puppydavies · 22/10/2007 11:46

you need to find someone whose hair you admire and ask them where they have theirs cut. also salon is fairly irrelevant, depends entirely on stylist. have had good and bad cuts at vidal sassoon - as in they didn't necessarily suit me - but they were all well-cut iyswim. have been loyal to 2 hairdressers over 20 yrs (apart from stint as vidal sassoon model), both owner/directors of independent salons, first was vidal sassoon trained, current is aveda salon.

Yes, fabulous cuts at Charles Worthington, but these days I just can't afford it! I'm not sure you'd get away with anywhere near £50 though. That's what it costs in my suburban bog-standard salon. At CW I was paying over £100 for a cut and blow dry (remember the blow dry is extra...!!)

fuzzywuzzy · 22/10/2007 13:12

Vidal sassoon in great monmouth street, it's the only salon I use as my hair is long and the stylist listens to me and gives me the cut I want....

Gemy · 22/10/2007 14:39

I am a regular at Vidal Sasson and although the cut is excellent prescision-wise, they do always attempt to give me something a bit funkier than I was thinking. On the other hand, theirs is the only cut where you can grow out thr style and your hair still keeps looking great.

I go to the one on South Molton St and just make sure you stress how short you want the shortest bit to be (esp if you wanting a graduated bob - longer at front) as I ended up with a really rather short back part.

If you are in London, there is a salon called Michaeljohn on Albemarle st, SW1 (I think) and they are expensive - nearly £100 I think but they really do listen and give a cut to suit you. I've been a few times and have always been extremely happy. But, since I have highlights too it was hard for me to justify the £200+ hair bill every 3 months.

ooh, this is all really helpful. Puppydavies / anna8888, are you london based? Do you recommend a particular Aveda salon / hairdresser?
Janinlondon - what level of stylist were you seeing at C.Worthington? Do you think it makes a big difference if you pay for senior vs. junior, etc?
Fuzzywuzzy/Gemy - do you recommend a particular stylist?
Sorry if too many questions - am feeling a bit nervous about it (could you tell?) particularly as I am thinking of going long to short (straight fine hair) for the first time in many years.

I used to go to Charles Worthington near Broadgate, and had a stylist who I really liked - but he moved to the salon in tottenham court road. I THINK his name was Marc.

Bessie123 · 22/10/2007 17:22

I used to go to Trevor Sorbie. They are quite good, but v expensive and not amazing.

womblingalong · 22/10/2007 17:25

Worked at Vidal Sassoon in the 90's, v good, worthington, great service, not particularly cutting edge, but good. Think Sorbie is very unstuffy and good. Have not been to Frieda.

womblingalong · 22/10/2007 17:26

P.s All will be much more expensive than £50!!!

I personally amd not loyal for one stylist, just who is available when I am free to come. But, I have had a japenese guy a few times , and there was lots of combing, and this is when the back of my graduated bob ended up shorter than I'd wanted - best stay away from this one
