what's going on? My baby is three months old, and I am still over a stone heavier than I was before pregnancy! i can't fit any of my old trousers or skirts, though I can squeeze into some of my tops. I'm eating really sensibly, and exercising a lot. And yet, each time I step on the scales, they haven't shifted a bit... and then I wonder why I bothered not eating chocolate!
I can't understand it -i've never had a problem losing weight in the past. and i'm not breastfeeding any more, so that can't be a factor...I've tried to tell myself to be patient, but I'm getting quite down about it. I'm working hard to shed these pounds, and getting nowhere! I can't afford to buy a whole new wardrobe, and am going back to work in the new year. If i'm still this size then, I don't know what i'll do clothes wise. Am I being too impatient? Has this happened to others?

don't forget - it took you nine months to put in the weight so cut yourself some slack and allow at least the same to lose it.

Are you breastfeeding? I have never been able to lose any weight while I was still feeding although it did fall off without even trying when stopped. That's not a reason to stop though!!

MadamePlatypus · 22/10/2007 09:06

I think 3 months isn't that long. If you carry on the way you are going I would think 6 months is a good goal to aim for. I think that the longer you take loosing the weight, the more likely it is to be permanent wait loss. Lots of buggy pushing is good for toning up your muscles in a gentle way.

Best advice I received when pg with my first was you take 9 months to get that big, you can take 9 months to a year to get back to pre-preg size. Please don't beat yourself up about it. It was over 4 months before I could put my favourite jeans on again (even then you wouldn't have exactly said that they fit ).

Miniegg, it took me almost a year to shift the last 9 pounds, so don't be too hard on yourself. I'm sure that if you continue to eat healthily and exercise the weight will drop off slowly over time (which is far more likely to make it stay off in the long run than if you were to drop it instantly).

AussieSim · 22/10/2007 10:52

3mths is unrealistic for 'normal' girls to be back to pre pregnancy weight. I like the 9mth on 9mth off rule, although I start to put a bit more effort in at the 6mth mark, but I bf for the 1st 12mths at least and I do think that you hang onto a bit that way. With each baby a little heavier afterwards - getting older is also a factor ... As my OB said about the state of my tummy after no. 2 - just one of the trade-offs of motherhood.

miniegg · 22/10/2007 14:33

thanks,i guess i'm just going to have to be patient..i naively assumed i'd be able to regain my figure quite quickly once i started trying, but i'll just have to hang in there and not let it get me down!

Took me a full year to get back to pre-pregnancy size. I did notice that I lost it alot easier after going back to work.

Don't dress miniegg, and don't be tempted to buy any expensive clothes until you're ready (they'll be too big in no time)

Gemy · 22/10/2007 14:53

Sorry meant 'stress' not 'dress'. Not saying you should just go around naked til you have lost your baby weight

sammysam · 22/10/2007 16:13

do you really loose more weight when you stop breastfeeding?

i'm still feeding at 15months, but (don't hate me) i lost all my baby weight in the week after (not the extra skin though-still have that) i was eating but not sleeping and i looked ill . I must be very weird but very lucky

now i weigh the same as i did before dd but i'm still eating like a horse-i always thought you lost more weight by breastfeeding?

3 months really is nothing-just think what your body has just been through-sounds like you are doing all the right things-don't be so hard on yourself (easy to say-i know)

jumpyjan · 22/10/2007 16:30

I am still trying (not that hard) to loose baby weight. I lost a bit when I stopped breastfeeding but need to lose more. Don't be too hard on yourself it takes time. I now accept that I probably won't fit into my old clothes not just due to size but I am a bit of a different shape now - thicker waist etc. Re what to wear to work, I went on Trinny and Susannah website and they recommended flat fronted, wide leg trousers with a side zip and I found the perfect thing in M&S and they are only £20 - they are the first flattering pair of trousers I have tried on since having DD so highly recommend and great for work or going out here

EffiePerine · 22/10/2007 16:36

Took me a while to lose that last stone (I put on 3.5 in total) but it seemed to vanish at about 9 months (still bfing at a year). I did a reasonable amount of exercise (i.e. walking with the buggy) but didn't diet. In fact, still eating like a horse and lighter than I was pre-pg.

time4tea · 23/10/2007 21:57

i lost loads of weight and felt well rather than starved doing it using GI Diet.

really recommend it
