Red marks from acne

DD has been taking antibiotics for acne and it's really starting to work. However she seems to be left with red marks where the spots were worst. Will these fade or is there anything she can do to help the skin repair?

They will fade-I think it’s called hyperpigmentation

TornadoOfSouls · 09/12/2020 09:14

Yes, it will lighten over time but she could try something like Ascorbic Acid & Alpha Arbutin serum from The Ordinary. Vitamin C is good for hyperpigmentation. TO is very affordable, straightforward and doesn’t include additional ingredients that might irritate her skin. She should use spf in the day. I’m using TO vitamin C and Alpha Arbutin (as separate serums) to lighten some sun damage hyperpigmentation- it’s working gently but surely, and is not irritating or upsetting my skin.

There are product guides on the website that are pretty helpful.

You could try massaging a few drops of rosehip oil into it every day. This is incredibly rejuvenating and wont clog her pores. If you've got them or dont mind splashing out, add a couple of drops of frankincense, rose and neroli essential oils to it. They will help further. Keep it in the fridge as the rose hip oil only lasts about 6 months at room temperature.
Otherwise, honey contains hydrogen peroxide which helps to lighten marks. Perhaps try making a face mask with that and whatever else you have in the fruit bowl! Blend it up with some oats and shove it on. 💆‍♀️🧖‍♀️

That's amazing thank you so much.

I'd avoid all oils as she has active acne. Maybe her GP can prescribe a retinol based cream for the red marks.

It might be worth trying a salicylic acid product such as the excellent Paulas Choice skin perfecting BHA 2 % which is generally very good anyway for acne prone skin. You can buy it directly from their website and they deliver quickly and well packaged. Although at the moment of course post is taking far longer than usual.

Tranexemic acid £8.99 in superdrug, buy one get one half price has made a remakable difference to the dark spots on my hands and face.

I have a red mark from a particularly bad cold sore, the vitamon C serum from La Roche Posay is helping, it's also improving the skin on my nose. I found the one from The Ordinary to be too harsh. She'll need an SPF if using a vitmanin C product, also for the Paula's Choice one.

Bananas Bananas can frankincense oil be applied neat?

HeraInTheHereAndNow · 09/12/2020 19:35

My son has started using Fade Out Cream for men.

This. It’s helped clear his skin, generally.

@Katiepoes no, you should dilute in a carrier oil 1st, ideally rosehip oil, but jojoba is balancing to the sebaceous glands. Whatever carrier oil you use, google it to make sure is it non-comedogenic , ie doesnt block pores.
The maximum dose is 3% essential oil for adults but this is far more than is needed. A drop or two in 5ml carrier is plenty.
If you do decide to go for it, download The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy and Essential Oils by Elizabeth Ashley on Kindle. It's free and brilliant for learning about how to apply and what oils do what.

My son is also on antibiotics for acne and we have tried a few things for the scarring but nothing seems to be helping so will try some of these. What about niacemic (sorry cannot spell it!) it is really getting him down as he has it all over his face chest and back. How long does it take for the antibiotics to work? He is two months in a no improvement so far

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/12/2020 18:56

@Tig33 I’d ring the dr and say there’s no improvement. After two months you’d expect to see some improvement.

Google “NICE guidelines acne” and all the treatment options with timings should be online.

Thank you @BananasBananas I'll give that book a look Smile
