Where do posh London teens shop?

I am looking for a gift for my goddaughter and I am told she’d like a maxi skirt. The teen shops I know about are Hollister and Jack Wills and both have let me down.

Any suggestions? What’s fashionable?

I have a teen niece who shops at UO, Zara sometimes, ASOS, and second hand

Notcontent · 07/12/2020 16:30

Brandy Melville is also a bit “basic” according to my dd! Agree that UO is safe choice if you go for a voucher. Or ASOS.

Vintage mostly - some otherstories and brandy Melville

SquirmOfEels · 07/12/2020 17:26

Also Bershka, but I've just had a look on their website and they don't have any maxi skirts (though some midis are long)

Otherwise Urban Outfitters, maybe American Apparel (but both they and Brandy Melville seem to be going in for bum freezing minis at the moment)

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 07/12/2020 17:31

DD is Brandy Melville girl personified - it's starting to annoy me now.

We were in a 'posh' place yesterday and DD was playing 'how many North Face jackets can I see' - she was in the hundreds by the time we left to go home.

I saw some girls in short 'kilt' type skirts which looked like school uniform PE kit ones. DD pointed out that they're a trend - rather silly looking as if you're so lame to be wearing a PE skirt at the weekend IMO!

MrsEricBana · 07/12/2020 17:35

Yep to Urban Outfitters.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 07/12/2020 17:38

I think Brandy Melville is very much 'tribal' teen girl clothes whereas Urban Outfitters is a bit more edgy (maybe for slightly older teens, once they aren't scared to look different?).

stayathomegardener · 07/12/2020 17:42

Free People, nice shop just off the Kings Road.

UntamedWisteria · 07/12/2020 20:01

Just ordered the most shapeless item of clothing imaginable from Brandy Melville for my goddaughter, on instructions from her mother!

Now I'm wondering if I need to get a Xmas present for DS's girlfriend, who has a very similar style.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 08/12/2020 12:16

That's not a long, chunky sweatshirt is it @UntamedWisteria? DD went out in her grey one plus baggy jeans and commented that she looked/felt like a bag lady (but a Brandy Melville wearing one!).

chezbot · 09/12/2020 00:24

What about Lazy Oaf? The teen girls in my life make it their first stop when were in London

NeedWineNow · 09/12/2020 08:55

Derailing slightly but is it a good time to say that I love Urban Outfitters, and at 58 in Kent I'm as far from a posh London kid as you can getGrin

PoulePouletteEternellement · 09/12/2020 09:11

Tangential I know - but how can anyone bear to clothe themselves in anything from the North Face - with that enormous logo disfiguring every item?

I admit I'm decades away from my teens - though they were partly spent in London. Buying clothes for teens now I can look past a tiny leather tag, say, or something small and inoffensive on the arm, but those huge North Face stamps on the chest?

And I know full well that countless posters recommend this brand for adults too. I wouldn't care how well they insulate from cold and wind, I'd probably cry if forced to wear any of it ...

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 09/12/2020 11:41

@PoulePouletteEternellement I totally agree. And it just makes me realise what sheep a lot of teens are. North Face are bland, boring and expensive enough to be more than they are!

Never heard of Lazy Oaf but liking the quirkiness of their clothes, although not sure DD would!

I love Urban Outfitters.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 09/12/2020 14:11

I asked my DD 13 last night if she'd heard of Brandy Melville and she got very excited and said yes. She laughed and said it's known as the skinny white girl brand Hmmwhich is exactly what she is.
It's very American based and preppy where they don't tend to wear uniforms like over here as half the items look like UK catholic school girl uniform items.
So I guess I'll be buying items from there in future Hmm as they will be a perfect fit at least. I have mixed feelings.

sashagabadon · 09/12/2020 15:41

Brandt Melville, urban outfitters, subdued and maybe Zara
Definitely not jack wills or top shop

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 09/12/2020 15:56

half the items look like UK catholic school girl uniform items. Yes, including the 'gym' style pleated skirts!

YesMeLady · 09/12/2020 15:58

What sort of maxi skirt would she like

FlyingByTheSeatof · 09/12/2020 16:25

I remember when Northface was not a cool brand and just a brand for decent reliable element proof outerwear like regatta or any of those you'd get in Millets and Blacks.

I dont know when or why it suddenly became so trendy.

My DD wears my old tri-climate north face coat now with it's zip in fleece thats too small for me and is more than happy with it. Its about 15 years old and still going strong.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 09/12/2020 16:27

Ps she had to wear it as every bloody rainproof jacket her size had sold out.

Ellapaella · 09/12/2020 21:20

Agree Urban Outfitters for teens. Can't go wrong there.

tara66 · 09/12/2020 21:46

Ya Brandy Melville, Kings Road darling.

Leodot · 10/12/2020 22:12

@PoulePouletteEternellement

I’m 30 so definitely not a teen and I like the North Face. I think a lot of the more fashionable sports and technical clothes companies have always had massive logos. Adidas, Nike, Ellesse etc. It’s just what a lot of sports companies do.

You can still get nice pieces in North Face. I have a down parka and a pair of snow boots from there and neither have an obvious logo. I don’t even think the logo is visible if you didn’t know it was there. They’ve kept me perfectly warm for the last 3 years and stand up to Scandinavian/arctic winters. I’d probably cry if you told me I couldn’t wear them again 😂. I barely take them off from about November to March. I love the coat so much I’m getting one of those zip extender things as I currently can’t fasten it comfortably due to being nearly 7 months pregnant. I’m just not willing to part with it during winter 😂.
