Detangling brush for thick curly hair that isn't girly?

I would like to get DS a new detangling brush as a minor present as his old one, from the pound shop, is falling apart. But most of the ones I've looked at have relatively soft bristles and I'm not sure they would work on his hair. It is very thick, very curly (about as curly as a white person's hair ever gets) and quite long. The only one I've seen (Boots own brand) that was stiffer and specifically labelled as being suitable for thick curly hair was only available in iridescent pink. I'm not sure that is really DS's style - he's kind of grungey and pretty much only wears black and grey. Does a plain black (or maybe red) strong detangling brush exist? I don't really want to go to the pound shop again as the product is not very well made and fills up with water.

I have very thick curly hair, as does my brother, and I can't recommend a wet brush enough. They come in lots of different designs.

I've had tangle teasers before, they're ok for a while but the bristles always bend after a while, whereas my wet brush has longer, stronger bristles and has lasted a few years now.

My hair is very thick and very curly and I don't own a hairbrush. I detangle in the shower with lots of conditioner. A brush leads to a lot of frizz for me.

The red tangle teezer is always recommended for Afro hair funnily enough. I think the bristles are longer/stronger or something.

This one, it’s specifically for thick and curly hair, it’s £12 which isn’t too bad.

I remember them first being released they were £20 odd.

Am I missing something with wet brushes like do they come in different grades or something? Dd has thick wavy dry hair (masses of it) and the wet brush does nowt for her. Personally I love tangle teasers and frizz ease op.

TommyKnocker · 03/12/2020 19:43

I've had two wet brushes (handle broke on the first but that happens a lot with my hair) love them. The bristles are really flexible so they dont pull hair, I've got a tangle teaser as well but I dont like it as much.

My latest wet brush is black and white.

DangerMouse17 · 03/12/2020 19:43

Definitely a tangle teezer

TommyKnocker · 03/12/2020 19:44

Just looked at the one @LittleTreasure linked, that does look perfect for a teenage boy!

We use Wet Brushes on DDs' hair too (thick hair with corkscrew curls). They come in a variety of colours - DD2 currently has a shiny gold one. DD1 has the Pro version which DH reckons is better (bathtime detangling is his job).
They can sometimes be found cheaply in TK Maxx if you're lucky.

Bluet1t · 03/12/2020 22:27

Yeah definitely check out tkmaxx. My wet brush is a sparkly green Christmas edition, and it was a fiver!

ExpensivelyDecorated · 03/12/2020 22:32

Yes to wet brushes, we've all got them (one straight, one curly, one wavy, all below shoulder to long)

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 03/12/2020 22:38

I have thick curly hair and use a tangle teaser wet brush, I find it easier with the handle as my hair is long. DS has very curly hair he's only two but I've had to condition his hair for as long as I can remember, he has a normal tangle teaser (with dinosaurs on) and that works well too. I have been known to borrow it when I leave my brush downstairs and am feeling too lazy to fetch it after a shower. They're not very expensive and would be a good stocking filler

Cantu wide tooth comb is perfect for detangling curls

PickAChew · 03/12/2020 22:45

I use a, denman wide tooth comb to detangle my thick, coarse, wavy hair wet, with conditioner in. With a decent conditioner and lots of water to ensure slip, it makes short work of it. The ones in superdrug are bright pink but I got a plain black one from Sally.

JaceLancs · 03/12/2020 22:49

I use a denman brush specifically for curly hair
It’s black and neon green so not at all girly
I bought mine from tkmaxx for under a fiver

FrustratoPotato · 03/12/2020 22:49

I just came on to say cantu wide tooth comb. Or any brand, mine is a boots cheap. Just that cantu is a grey comb so a neutral colour for your DS.
cantu comb

Waterlemon · 03/12/2020 22:54

Another recommendation for Denham- they do it in black. I have very, very thick hair that’s quite wavy rather than curly. But it’s the only brush that can get through all the layers of my hair And doesn’t break.

ISBN111 · 03/12/2020 22:59

Another vote for denman for really thick curly hair

GooseberryTart · 03/12/2020 23:05

Wet Brushes are good here is a black one.

Tangle teezers are magic, and you can get them in plain black.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 04/12/2020 06:35

We used to use tangle teesers when the DCs were little but they are absolutely no good to any of us as teens/adults, the bristles are far too short, the wet brushes are much better.

Thanks all - lots of suggestions to consider!
