Heated rollers with American plug not working. How do I tell if it's them or the converter plug?

Just that really - do I have to buy a 2nd voltage converter plug to see if it's them or the plug that's faulty? I ordered from the states as they had 2 inch ones that were harder to get here.

I don't know, but be careful. US stuff uses lower voltage than us. I fried a travel hairdryer by not switching it back from the US setting to European.

A step down convertor should work.

Thanks Zara and Irked - I think I worded my question badly though! I have a step down converter but when I plugged them in using it the rollers didn't turn on. I'm wondering if I have to buy a 2nd converter to work out if it's the rollers or the converter that doesn't work?

@bigmassivecoconut - I have no idea what a second converter would cost. If you bought a UK to US ordinary plug adapter could you plug something you know works (like a hairdryer) in via the converter to see if it switches on? If it does then it looks like the converter is working and the rollers are faulty. If it doesn't then the converter is kaput. I'm not very electrically minded so feel free to ignore this advice if it seems off!

Ha ha, thanks Irked - I think I'd need another product with an American plug to test it though and I only have the rollers! Groan!

theyyearofgoodhair · 05/12/2020 17:42

Sorry - I name changed obviously - I'm the OP!

What if you got or borrowed a US to UK converter that you knew worked (borrowing therefore preferable really), plugged that into the step down and plugged any normal working UK thing into that?

Obviously would be a bit of a fire hazard so not one to leave plugged in but might work for testing?

Ooh be careful. I know this should be fine with the right converter BUT I had curling tongs from the US because, like you, I coveted the 2 inch (come on UK!). One day I'd left the plug in the socket. The tongs were off but there must have been some kind of power surge or something, we were unaware of whatever it was. Gradually we started smelling burning. By the time we worked out what it was the plastic handle of the tongs had melted. I miss the 2 inch tongs but I won't be replacing them!

Oh jesus dudsville that sounds terrifying! But yes, why do they assume us UK women want less voluminous hair?! I want to look like a Texan news anchor! Or maybe not quite but not far off it!

Nacreous, I'm going to have to take some time to mull over that suggestion. I think you've only added one extra step but when each step involves 2 sides or directions I get confused very quickly!
