Haircut help for DD please

DD is 5 and wants her hair in a bob so that she doesn't have to wear it up for school. I think she probably wants it about chin length or a little longer, so it doesn't grow beyond shoulder length before her next haircut. Her hair is quite fine and a bit wavy.

Any ideas what I need to ask for? Should it have layers or be all one length? Thanks

She has beautiful hair. I would just tell them the length you want and ask their advice on the finish. They are the experts after all. Smile Bet it will look fab!

Im a hairdresser and love a photo. I would also consider her waves may become more prominant if she cuts the length off . So i would suggest you chat about if she wants that look

Does she wear it up a lot (despite allegedly preferring not to)? My DD was desperate for a bob with fringe at that age, we had it cut. It pissed her right off TBH. Hair everywhere, all the time with no escape. She grew it out again straight away. It looked excellent mind.

She wears it up for school as she has to have it up for PE and I don't want her to bring home nits. Given the choice, she wouldn't wear it up at all. She's growing out the fringe she cut herself last year and it flops over her eye, so I've said she will need to wear clips or she will just hide behind even more of her hair.

Our hair dresser seems to have a very standard cut that she did for each of us last time with some layering, so I think I need to ask specifically if that's not what we want.

My Dd is a bit older and likes a Bob, although she’s a bit older. Her hair is quite fine but lots of it, so it gets tangled underneath if it gets too long so we try to avoid that! I don’t let the hairdressers put layers in it though. It’s a longer Bob and is just above her shoulders. She can still get small eponymous tail or do half up half down if she wants it back.

Just beware that bob length is a nightmare for catching nits - much worse than long hair that is tied back.

LemonBreeland · 03/12/2020 14:06

I would say a bob with no layers will probably sit nicer. Will she wear a hairband to keep it off her face?

Justajot · 03/12/2020 20:45

Yeah, I'm a bit concerned about nits, but will have to live with that as I've already agreed.

I don't think she will wear a headband, but I think she might keep clips in.

Thanks for all of the responses.

DD’s hair was not dissimilar and tended to
wave and be more of a hassle when in a longer bob, always in her face but not quite long enough to tie back. We initially cut her long hair off and donated to the little Princess trust for her starting school as she only liked wearing it straight down and wouldn’t sit for ponytails and plaits etc. It was well past her waist so she couldn’t wear it down once she started school so we went with a longer one length bob about three inches below her chin and it drove her mad and was always in the way. Headbands gave her earache.

What worked best in the end was quite a short bob that needed very little done to it each day. We had it cut really short at the back and then to ear lobe length at most appointments with a fringe above her eyebrows. This gave it six or eight weeks growing out time before she’d be due another cut and by that time it had grown just below her chin but it was still neat and tidy and easy to style and it was easy enough for me to trim her fringe if it ever did start getting too long or often the hairdresser or barber would trim it for free when me or her brothers were in, in between her main haircuts. It was also brilliant for managing when she used to swim twice a week and she was able to wash and dry her own hair from a younger age than her peers. I think our hairdresser used to call it a short inverted bob. It was quite 1920s looking.

I love you for mentioning this. It sounds obvious but I was really surprised at how my long waves became proper coiled curls at chin length.
mumsymum25 · 11/08/2021 00:35

A chin length bob may be too long and still get in her face. Perhaps try a box bob cut just below her ears so she can tuck her hair behind them without any excess hair dangling. It would be very short, but very tidy, and if DD wants a bob, then I would let her. She may be prone to nits, yes, but even kids with long plaited hair get head lice and at least nit treatment would be easier. Preventative measures also help, like using tea tree oil. You could even suggest getting her haircut even shorter into a pixie cut if you think she may like that.

Aquamarine1029 · 11/08/2021 00:42

I wouldn't want her to have a bob, it makes it almost impossible to tie up for sport.

mumsymum25 · 11/08/2021 01:02

I understand what you mean and I would feel the same way, but her DD doesn’t want her hair up and that’s why she wants a bob. Personally, if she wants a bob, I would let her have her haircut. Ever bobbed hair can still get french plaits in and it looks really cute.
