Why is is so hard to find a reasonably stylish, young girls coat that it both warm and waterproof?!?!

Every thing seems to be one or the other.
We have a waterproof wax jacket that is a bit on the thin side, a rain coat that is v thin and a joules hooded puffa type coat that is warm but can only cope with a smattering of rain. Every day I try and make a call which is the priority. Struggling to find any coats that are both unless we go down the very technical route.
Anyone found any good ones?
Zara seem to have some but she is at that odd size of about to turn 5 and the young girls range is up to age 4-5 and older girls is from age 6. They seem to have forgotten about 5 year olds.

I second regatta. They do now have quite a wide range, and the fleece lined waterproof ones they do in navy/olive are not garish and they are warm and obviously waterproof. They do some now with belts/faux fur hoods. I would take a look there if you want waterproof and warm but not too expensive.

Pop coats are completely waterproof. We usually get the thinner shell coats and add the fleece liner that attaches to the jacket so they're more versatile and wearable all year round.

tk maxx is fab for coats but you have to trawl through in person ime.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 30/11/2020 20:52

Mountain Warehouse have some thick warm and waterproof coats - some lovely designs too.

mamaca · 30/11/2020 20:56

Didriksons do some nice ones for kids - waterproof, warm and stylish

MadameButterface · 30/11/2020 20:57

this is waterproof

and in a purple

is she a white coat kind of child? (neither of mine were)

not wildly exciting, but waterproof coats aren't especially are they Grin

Didyousaynutella · 01/12/2020 06:49

Madame she is def not a white coat girl. Her reception class is pretty much all outdoor learning ( which is fab). Coat needs washing every couple of weeks and always covered in mud/chalk.

Which is why I generally have a couple of coats on rotation as well!

I got a ski jacket but checked carefully as very few are waterproof.

My son has (my daughter had too when you get), the Polarn O Pyret raincoat with the detachable fleece, best of both worlds. Not sure about your idea of stylish though as they are plain colours so my son has a navy coat with a yellow fleece. The fleece is also showerproof in its own. I like the fact they are neutral. They can be expensive but Batavian to be had in their sale. Their clothes are excellent quality.

Ignore awful spelling - typing issue so early! That would be bargains.

purplemunkey · 01/12/2020 19:56

Oh good, glad you liked them OP. We got the navy parka with the stars. It’s been great so far. It has a removable inner jacket we used when the weather started to turn. Now she’s wearing the full parka to school.

Another vote for Boden. They are very warm, keep out the rain and wind and look lovely. They also convert to a gilet for autumn and spring

AndAllOurYesterdays · 01/12/2020 22:38

I struggled to get a girl's coat with similar criteria, but with a longer length. As I remember moaning about cold legs from last year. Ended up with a purple one from regatta which has proved very practical. And no wet bottoms when she sits down on damp benches.

LaPampa · 01/12/2020 23:03

Mine wear didriksons parkas. Waterproof. They seem happy that they’re stylish enough.

clareykb · 01/12/2020 23:07

I recommend Regatta as well. They have a sale on at the moment.

copperoliver · 01/12/2020 23:26

Top recommendations would be Lands End, Hatley and Frugi. All around the £50 mark but you are definitely paying for function and style. We've tried the Frugi explorer which has some fab prints, the Lands End coats come in some lovely colours and Hatley are very well made.

NothingInterestingToDeclare · 04/12/2020 21:23

I would second lands end coats - I got my daughter one and it’s got lots of nice features and is super cosy- what about something like this one www.landsend.co.uk/s/LandsEndUK/Girls_Winter_Fleece_Lined_ThermoPlume_Coat/pp/5457358.html?coupon=RB5T&_cclid=Google_EAIaIQobChMI75aD56C17QIViNPtCh0HJgSJEAQYASABEgIY3PD_BwE&cm_mmc=search_g_pla_6514533809_51804310-12%20years1HG&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI75aD56C17QIViNPtCh0HJgSJEAQYASABEgIY3PD_BwE

With most clothing or shoes I tend to buy my 8yo DD stuff from the boys section.

I hate how impractical girls clothing is, shorts are my biggest hate. Boys shorts are long and with pockets, sensible material. Why clothes makers think young girls need overly short shorts is beyond me.

Stellaris22 · 04/12/2020 21:34

We have a 3 in 1 waterproof jacket with a purple fleece inside for DD from Mountain Warehouse. It's purple and blue and I think it's lovely.
