If you straighten your curly hair once/twice a week, is it damaged?

I have longish curly hair which I have never usually bothered to straighten, although I do like how it looks when the hairdresser blow dries it. One of the reasons I don't really straighten is that I'm worried about damaging it. But I imagine straighteners have probably got better since 2005, which was the last time I really thought about it.

So if you straighten your curly hair do you think the straightening damages it? Any recommendations for straighteners / hair protecting products also welcome...

Not really. I have thick curly hair that falls into ringlets if I let it dry naturally, but I think that straightening actually makes it look healthier. Left to it’s own devices it just looks a bit scruffy and wild, but when I’ve straightened it it’s shiny and looks full and bouncy. Changes my whole look. I’ve never noticed that it seems damaged due to the straightening (which I do most days), but I do use good quality shampoo and conditioner, I do regular deep conditioning and I use heat protecting products. Never get split ends either and only have it trimmed twice a year. I wish I could love my curly hair but I just can’t.

Thanks @SantasYumnuts

Which products and straighteners do you use? I am out of date and clueless.

I am curly and won't touch straighteners but I have a curly friend who used to iron out her curls and it really wrecked her curls. she recently had quite a chop to get rid of the damage.

Yes, I don't want to damage my hair. But I'm wondering whether that would happen if I only did it once a week or so and used heat protection products. When I hear of people damaging their hair, they tend to be straightening it to within an inch of its life every day.

You can get a professional straightening in a salon which lasts for 3 months and doesn’t damage your hair. This is a better solution than straighteners imo.

I use steampod. It doesn’t damage hair and makes it healthier. It adds steam into you hair before the straighteners pass through.

I have thick curly hair and straighten it each day. Hair is shinier and softer. It’s a age changer and better than ghds

@Yachting1212 I just googled the steampod as I’d never heard of them. Great reviews but they are bloody expensive 😮

I've used GHDs for 15 years and more recently, Cloud 9s. My hair is fine! I'm supposed to use a heat protector spray, but I hardly ever do. I've got the GHD one, but there are loads.
Some people get lucky, I guess. Like gel nails, some people get away with it, like me, but other people say it damages their nails.
I had a kerastraight salon treatment but it didn't last very long. Wouldn't bother doing it again.

@FarquarKumquatsmama they are worth the money. My last pair lasted for 4 years and they still work. Only upgraded as the first ones were really big.

My hair has never been in such good shape. GHD did damage my hair. It’s worth it for healthy hair. My mum bought a set as her hair was so damaged and now it’s healthy
