Do you wear ‘summery’ clothes in autumn and winter?

In summer I wear a lot of cotton and linen tunic type tops. I’m fat and make a design myself that suits my shape and they go with a variety of trousers so I really like them.

I wouldn’t wear linen in autumn/winter but could I get away with cotton tunics under cardigans even in bright/summery prints?

It feels a bit weird but I really don’t like bulky clothes and I like bright colours. I can’t decide if I’ll look weird.

I don’t think that would look weird at all - if I saw someone wearing something light and colourful now I’d probably think how lovely and cheerful it looked (and feel deeply envious as I’m always bloody freezing from Oct-April)

I do! I like patterned cotton dresses and I winterise them with long sleeve tops tights and boots.

I don't wear summery clothes in summer

Sorry, interrupted by boisterous puppy and posted too soon.
Meant to say I don't wear summery clothes but it sounds like a good look.

GreyishDays · 28/11/2020 16:08

Linen no, but other bright colours yes. With a mid coloured cardigan, for example.

I wear the same stuff all year round. All the people I work with seem to want both the aircon and the heating turned up so high that our office is far colder in summer than it is in winter.

Ginfordinner · 28/11/2020 16:14

No. My summer clothes are designed for hot weather and would look ridiculous and not be warm enough for me.

In summer I wear sleeveless dresses or shorts and skirts and sleeveless/short sleeved tops.

In winter I wear jeans with T-shirts and cardigans/jumpers or fleece tops. My summer and winter wardrobes are entirely different.

Oly4 · 28/11/2020 16:17

No I have completely separate wardrobes.. and have much warmer clothes in winter

DianaT1969 · 28/11/2020 16:20

Frankie on Grace & Frankie manages this well. Long sleeve cotton tops under tunics, teamed with a cardigan and boots.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 28/11/2020 16:25

No, especially not linen which is hot weather fabric.

Summer colours/patterns/fabrics look wrong in winter. Not so much jersey stuff like t shirts and dresses, but woven stuff.

Merryoldgoat · 28/11/2020 17:13

Thanks all - seems a bit split.

It’s tricky - I obviously wouldn’t wear linen once the weather turns but I wasn’t sure about cotton. Maybe I’ll keep the fabric for summer and get some jersey instead.

OP, wear what you want when you want. I more or less wear the same things throughout the year except for that one week when it's super hot. The rest of the time I am too busy feeling cold. A cotton short sleeve dress can be layered with a long sleeved t-shirt underneath, woolly tights and a chunky cardi on top, maybe with a scarf. You can make it work!

WarOnWomen · 28/11/2020 19:03

Or a top with the same combo but with trousers instead of tights. I think your clothes sound wonderful - I love colour.

Craftycorvid · 28/11/2020 19:04

I have a nice heavy linen shirt that I fully intend to wear with winter trousers and skirts. It’s an ancient fabric that would traditionally have been multi-season, it can be warm and even if it’s quite gauzy linen (rather than the stout bedsheet weight stuff) you can layer it.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/11/2020 20:33

I pack away summer dresses and skirts, plus light trousers, but things like t-shirts I wear with a cardigan, and often a long sleeved heat-tech top underneath too.

LunaTheCat · 28/11/2020 20:42

Yep I have done this - looks chic and brings brightness to winter.
Wear what makes you feel good!
I have just bought a heavy linen black short sleeved dress - it is summer here but I am definitely going to wear in winter layered up.

StarlightLady · 29/11/2020 07:06

I don’t like bulky things. When indoors l tend to stick with dresses regardless of the season, l change to jeans or maybe put the opaques on, on colder winter days when l go out.

I prefer a warm coat to bulky jumpers when out and about outside.

thedevilinablackdress · 29/11/2020 08:55

Some linen can definitely be worn year round. It depends on, I think, the weight, style and colour of the fabric/garment. I have a tobacco coloured tunic dress that work well with a polo neck underneath, plus tights and boots.
