DIY highlights

With acceptance that many people will recoil in horror at the thought of DIY highlights at all and even more so if using a cap... I have a fringe. I am planning to do highlights with a cap. I cut my own hair, I dye it, if it all goes wrong I am fine with whacking on a dark dye or embracing a mad curly look whilst a dodgy cut grows out. I can live with mistakes. I still would prefer to avoid mistakes if I can! So... any advice? Ignore the fringe entirely? Pull just a very very few thin strands few? Go for it as if it's just any other section of the head?

Argh. A very very few thin strands through, I mean.

Following as I'm thinking of doing mine!

I think I'd do the fringe separately without cap next day freehand, so you can see where the highlights are going. I'm not a hairdresser but friend does her highlights in stages (rather than trying to replicate a salon experience).

That's probably the best idea Otherplans, thank you :)

Yeah do fringe separately. and make sure the hair you pull through he holes is directly under the hole and pulled through to the root. I accidentally pulled bits through from the side and so I ended up with random long dark root sections (if you see what I mean)
