Im 46, i've been the same dress size my whole life (I know im lucky), but last lockdown I put on some weight, I managed to struggle along in summer dresses and leggings. I never lost the weight and wore my jeans with the top button open. This lockdown i've put on more weight and I can't get anywhere near them. So I've bit the bullet and ordered some one size up, i'm slightly worried I shouldve ordered two sizes up.
Im heart broken... but it had to be done :(

Anyone else had to do this...

Im sure I'll feel better when I can actually wear something that actually fits me :(

I am trying not to! I bought some that are the middle size (eg 31 waist instead of 30), but most shops just have 30, 32, 34 etc. I feel like if I just wait long enough the weight will magically melt away without me consciously trying.

MikeUniformMike · 28/11/2020 10:58

The size is just a number. Wear what fits.

If you are worried about putting on weight, you could do something about it.

Karcheer · 28/11/2020 11:09

@TooExtraImmatureCheddar i'm hoping it melts away too! haha!

@MikeUniformMike you are of course correct. I was seeing a PT three times a week during October/ Early November but that has halted.

My partner and I do an online and in park session called Be Military Fit. It's online at the moment due to lockdown however back in park when lock down is lifted. Check to see if there is one near you. It's so fun and challenging!

I'm at a steady 55kg and have remained this throughout lockdown thanks to Be Military Fit. I'm also now pregnant, and have kept the excess fat off, don't worry it will be get better once lockdown is lifted. If you wanna get back to your usual dress size then it's something to work towards. But remember... it's completely normal because lockdown has been such a difficult time. Don't look at it as a negative, you're beautiful! Stay strong, sending hugs xxxx

It sucks but far better than spilling out of ill fitting clothes. The snide in me saying you had a bloody good run (jealous!) But its probably so shocking the first it happens when you got this far the same size.
You dont have to resign yourself to it though

Clothes in bigger size doesnt mean you gave up it just means you refuse to look bad and be uncomfortable because you got bigger or until you lose it. There is no need to be horrid to ourselves.

Karcheer · 28/11/2020 11:40

@TeaBanditTeej I live in the country and we dont have too many things like that (light yoga in the village hall). I used to do a lot of walking, but my dog hurt his back 7 weeks ago, so i've not even done that (I know I could walk without him, but he makes me feel bad!)

@Jaxxi thank you, you are right. Just need to see this as a phase. And lose it, but I dont need to be uncomfortable in the meantime!

If you can't be bothered with exercise, you could just shop in M&S.

MikeUniformMike · 28/11/2020 12:57

Or Gap. Both M&S and Gap make good jeans but some Gap sizes are USA sizes and M&S tend to be more than ample.

Jaxxi · 28/11/2020 13:10

Oh miaow 😂 saucer of milk for this one
MikeUniformMike · 28/11/2020 13:15

Not at all Jaxxi. Jeans vary in fit. M&S has allegedly reviewed its jeans sizing.

again2020 · 28/11/2020 17:59

Me too! For the first time in my adult life I've made peace with the fact that I'm a size 12 not a 10...and I'm much younger than you. They feel much more comfortable though. Don't worry about it.

Karcheer · 28/11/2020 18:04

@again2020 thank you, im hoping the fact they feel comfortable will make up for the size change :)

I felt so much better when I finally gave in and ordered a size up! My clothes now make me look good instead of squished, and they're much comfier.
It's not a cardinal sin to change shape over time. Life's too short to spend too much effort trying to stop it.

ViciousJackdaw · 29/11/2020 01:19

Heartbroken though? You've gone up one size at the age of 46. A little perspective is needed. Please don't base your self-worth around the number on a label.

StarlightLady · 29/11/2020 07:10

My dresses still seem to fit but that is not a good guide.

With jeans, I honestly don’t know, because l can find no consitency in jeans sizing whatsoever. You also don’t know how much they are going to stretch with time, even immediately after a hot wash.

Happymum12345 · 29/11/2020 08:45

Just get some jeggings with stretch and kid yourself you’re still your old size until you are!

Stinkyjellycat · 29/11/2020 09:16

I’ve got 3 pairs of the exact same size trousers from next. When I lie them on top of each other they are all different in actual size - one of them is several INCHES bigger in the waist. You might have tried a different pair in the same type and found they fitted.

Karcheer · 29/11/2020 09:21

@ViciousJackdaw ok maybe not heartbroken... but definitely not thrilled.

@Stinkyjellycat these are jeans I’ve had a while. They’ve either mysteriously shrunk or I’ve grown and I know which is true :)

@Happymum12345 I’ve ordered jeggings in the bigger size!

Ffs, I practically go up a size every year Sad One measly size OP? Count yourself extremely lucky.

HerselfIndoors · 29/11/2020 09:29

Sorry to break it to you but I was also the same size my whole life, barring pregnancies, until my late 40s. It got so much harder not to put weight on and much harder to lose it.

It's not a cardinal sin to change shape over time. Life's too short to spend too much effort trying to stop it.

I agree with this. I try to accept my body's ways and wear what's comfortable and what works for me. Although to not end up unhealthily overweight, I do have to eat less than I used to, but I'm not going to be super-strict and aim for the body of a 25-year-old.

You will feel better when your clothes fit, you're comfortable and don't feel squished.
